One piece of advice when flying out of Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL): If you're hungry, don't…read moremake a dining decision until you go past the Duty Free shops. The ride from the heart of downtown Liverpool is quickest by car (25 min ... not the long slog of London's Gatwick and Heathrow.) I love the entryway ... it's easy to make your way in without the usual bustle around an airport. Liverpool does a much better job selling its favorite sons (The Beatles) than back the first time I was here in the 80s, and LPL is no exception. While the wife was buying booze in Duty Free, I spent just as much time and money in the "With Love from Liverpool", Beatles gift shop. Don't forget to check out the statue of John Lennon in the airport (called "Above Us Only Sky" on the Lower Level), as well as the Yellow Submarine out front (like you can miss it!). So, back to eating. Our first time at LPL, we're starving. We see a sign for Frankie and Benny's. Being American, we've never heard of it, looks like a great family restaurant. Well, cut to an hour later, and the worst Caesar Salads ever in our recent past, we get past the Duty Free, go down an escalator, and see (for the first time), The Estuary Bar & Grill, The Kissing Gate, Caffè Ritazza, The Beer House, a Starbucks, and even a Subway. ARGH! So yeah, power through the Duty Free (you have to go through hit to get to the terminals) for better dining options. Hey LPL: Make more clear signage about the restaurants you have!!!

    Manchester Airport Terminal 2

Manchester Airport Terminal 2 has been subject to a lot of attention lately, it's currently…read moreundergoing a £1.3bn investment programme which is much needed. The Terminal re-opened in 2021 and in terms of overall looks, the main atrium is stunning and puts the other Terminals at the Airport to shame. Terminal 2 features a selection of places to eat and drink after security, including Archie's, Barburrito, Pot Kettle Black, Pret, San Carlo and Wagamama. There is also a Starbucks before security, but you won't be able to take your coffee with you from here. There is also a small selection of shops including Airport regulars WHSmith and Boots, which is also joined by JD Sports, and Marks and Spencer, although the latter is in the Arrivals area, again before security. While the Airport certainly looks better and in terms of appearance, it felt spacious and comfortable with a wide seating area, it still is Manchester Airport at the end of the day, which always seems to have constant problems from the sky-high drop-off charge for picking up a friend or ordering a taxi, to the staffing issues. The cost to drop someone off at the Airport is £5 for 5 minutes, or £6 for 10 minutes, with the pick-up charge being a set £6, this is similar to a couple of other Airports in the UK, which just seems like another money-making scheme. I first used Terminal 2 after my flight to Prague in July 2022, and the long walk to passport control was exhausting, it makes me wonder if they rushed opening the Terminal solely to meet the demands of flights having replaced the old Terminal 2, as the new security area is still in the process of opening. It's also a bit out of the sticks to get to Terminal 2 from the Manchester Airport Station (for train and tram), it's a walk across a long footbridge, when Terminals 1 and 3 are again much closer, so you will have to allow more time for T2, as I found out the hard way when arriving into T1 from the Doubletree by Hilton, which I stayed before one of my recent trips to Terminal 2. Despite, a good number of food options there isn't much for gluten-free brands I'd personally want to go to, having had issues with San Carlo and Wagamama before who'd be the obvious choices. 3* - The Airport looks great and for a second you'll think you're in an Airport which is run with a shred of competence but I just think it's overhyped and they've spent too much time promoting a fancy modern design rather than working on practicality and the quality of the businesses located inside, but still it's a big improvement on the old T2 already and with some changes, it is hopefully going to get better.

Flew into Manchester after a number of years. Huge improvement from 2007. Can't complain!read more
