RE-POST: Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building exists as PART of the Civic Center…read more The FRANK F. FASI MUNICIPAL BUILDING is a 16-story governmental office building. It was built sometime during the 1980's to early 1990's during the tenure of then Mayor Frank F. Fasi. It wasn't until 2006, when Mayor Hanneman renamed this building and the civic center after Mayor Fasi for the recognition of Mayor Fasi's service and commitment to the City of Honolulu. Mayor Fasi is credited for "building" much of the foundations on which Honolulu stands. In fact, as a young adult, I remember seeing bulldozers in downtown Honolulu's Capitol District where this building and several others were built. He held the distinction of being the longest serving Mayor of Honolulu (1969 - 1981). Last year, when we were in the process of selling our home, we had to get some documents from a couple of offices located this building. We parked in the municipal parking lot and followed the pathway to the building's entrance. It is a secure building as we signed in with the security guard and left our identification cards with him. We also had to pass through a metal detection booth which reminded me of those at airport TSA checkpoints. The offices that we know of that are within this building are: -Department of Planning and Permits -DPP Data Access & Imaging Branch (they STILL use microfiche readers) -Land Use Commission -Census Data. We're sure that there are other C&C offices here but we weren't allowed to take pictures or go to any other offices than what we signed in for. So, if you're planning to build an addition or renovation to your home, you or your contractor will need to come here to obtain a permit for the construction. This building houses offices related to Real Property. By the way, this building is PART of the civic center.

Me and my partner officially called Honolulu our home as we moved to Waikiki in the turn of the century. We were able to afford a condo in a mid-rise building, then moved to a plantation-style house. Not fancy but sufficient and convenient to the beach and downtown (except met a slumlord). Back then, everything was within reach. I loved the cultures and atmosphere. The only thing we complained the most was the cost of necessities. Well, that was one of the reasons we moved to Texas because we ran out of money. Bottom line is... don't try to live in Honolulu poor. You would need at least a million dollars to live comfortably back then 25 years ago. Not sure how much it is now today.

I encountered an officer who, completely unaware of my financial acumen, extensive law enforcement experience, and military service, had the nerve to act as if he was the sole guardian of the law. That moment wasn't just a slap in the face--it was a brutal reminder that despite decades of sacrifice and achievement, some of these outdated attitudes are still embedded in our institutions. It's infuriating to realize that after all this time, real change remains painfully out of reach. I'm left questioning where I belong, and the thought of returning to Japan--a place where, at least then, I felt my value was recognized--now seems like a potential path to hope. The fight against this injustice is personal, and it burns with a fury that demands not just acknowledgment, but a radical shift in how we are seen and treated.

Makes it possible between the two Kaimuki Municipal Parking lots along Waialae Ave as one of the larger gated lot is the standard municipal rate of $0.75 which is much more reasonable versus the convenient street parking metered rates though are much more difficult to find as circling around blocks can be time consuming located between 11th and 12th Ave with entrance from both streets and you pay at any kiosk in the lot before exiting making it easy for you to enjoy the various merchants in the area. The other smaller lot is located between 12th Ave and Koko Head Ave which is also a Municipal lot which is the one that has been recently renovated and is now a lovely smooth surface is slightly different as it's not gated and payment is by meter it is much smaller and though both does offer a great rate and alternative parking choices it does seem to be the favorite option versus the difficult search on busy Waialae Ave. Thank you!

Honolulu's City Hall is named "Honolulu Hale"…read more.. Hale (pronounced: Hah-lay) is the Hawaiian word for building or house. Therefore, Honolulu House (or Honolulu Building) contains some of Honolulu's important departments... such as the Office of the Mayor. I've been to Honolulu Hale to view the annual Christmas decorations and wreath contests, for early voting, and to pay Real Property taxes. This time, I parked under the building, using an entrance on Punchbowl Street. It was metered parking - pay at the machine. My fellow members of the Rising Phoenix Jaycees and I were invited to the Honolulu City Council Chamber to receive a Proclamation for our 40 years of service to our Community! It was a great honor! Our Past President, Eve E., gathered us together. Council member, Radiant Cordero, spearheaded this event. Council members, Tyler Dos Santos-Tam and Radiant Cordero, read the Proclamation aloud. The event was live-streamed on 'Ōlelo Station and will be uploaded to YouTube. Thank you for this great recognition! We were all excited to be inside the City Council Chamber of Honolulu Hale!

This a cute and calm little park with a pond. There is lots of shade, benches around the park, and…read morea great breeze. My son loves coming here, we bring a big bag of oats and feed the ducks, chickens, and birds. Be careful though as the birds go CRAZY here. The moment you throw some food, they come flying in droves. Haha so if you are not a bird person, forget bringing feed, haha. Right now there are 3 cute ducklings and a handful of baby chicks. So tiny and cute. The pond also has a bunch of Koi fish and fat tilapias. Great little spot to relax, small picnic, and get some fun feeding animals. Across the street is also a park with a playground and basketball courts.

First review if 2024!…read more I brought my kids here just days after they saw the movie ' Migration'! They absolutely loved being here at the springs, I know, because they didn't even want to leave when I offered to take them to the playground just across the street. They looooved seeing the ducks and koi fish most! The pigeons were a bit much. We had sat in the little bleacher looking area, but had to move because all the pigeons started pooping after some kids fed them... I brought then to the Kunawai Springs specifically because I knew about the ducks, although I hadn't been here before! We had so much fun though! We're doing a 1000 hours outside challenge this year, 2024, so I've been looking into different outdoor activities for our family to partake in! We'll definitely be coming back here, the kids enjoyed it so much. Coming here brought back so much memories for many of our family members. I brought the kiddos here, took lots of pictures, and when I posted them, they all messaged me that they used to all come here when they were younger, and used to even swim I the pond?!?! Anyways, lots of fun! We'll be back!

Secret getaway spot in Downtown, Honolulu, Hawai'i…read more.. Located in the Topa Financial Center on Bishop Street, Honolulu Rooftop Garden is free to enter! Just find the elevator near the Security Desk and catch it up to the 6th Floor. Then, take the stairs up (about 3 and a half flights). There was a beautiful view of Aloha Tower! We enjoyed several benches and a picnic table! The plumeria trees and other foliage were thriving! Most of all, we liked the peaceful, clean, safe environment!

Unexpected find…read more.. After having lunch at a cafe in the building I decided to bring my drink to a place that I heard about...the rooftop garden. I just had no idea of the space that's free to the public to enjoy is a nice space along with the views as it's been awhile since I've gotten an ocean view at my leisure though don't expect shangrila but a nice outdoor space in the midst of downtown. Honolulu Rooftop Garden is on top of Topa Financial Center "Parking Garage" so getting there you need to take the parking garage elevator which is right next to the security desk to the 6th floor and take about three flight of stairs (not three levels) and poof there it is. It's basically all green with lightly shaded seatings surrounded by plumeria trees is very lush and well maintained where one side is the side of Topa building so there's no mountain breeze which did get quite hot and the other is the view of Aloha Tower and Honolulu Harbor is a unique sight that I normal don't see but will probably enjoy this space during cooler seasons and appreciate the time it must take to keep it clean and open to the public. The graduation ceremony law enforcement recruit class (LERC) 25-01 held their awards ceremony there. The auditorium was cleaned and plenty of seating. The air conditioning was working very well. The Sheriff and some of his Command Staff were present for the ceremony.

However, we came away with a LOT more information and history about these buildings. The Mission Memorial Buildings is a complex comprised of 3 separate buildings which face King Street and its closest neighboring Government building is Honolulu Hale at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center. Currently, the 3 buildings are identified as the MMB (Mission Memorial Building), MMA (Mission Memorial Auditorium ) and MRC (Municipal Reference Center). Its Neo-Classical red brick structures are the ONLY example of Jeffersonian style in Hawai'i. TIMELINE: - 1915 to 1916: Originally, these buildings were commissioned by the Hawaii Evangelical Association in preparation for the centennial commemoration of the arrival of American Protestant missionaries in 1820. This complex of buildings served as the headquarters of the Hawaii Evangelical Association, part of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, a non-profit educational institution and genealogical society whose membership is comprised of descendants of the first American Protestant missionaries to Hawaii. The HMCS is also the parent organization of MissionHouses Museum. The Mission Memorial Building (MMB) site was the previous home of the Kawaiahao Seminary and the Honolulu Mission Printing Office. - 1930: The Municipal Reference Center was established as part of this complex where it houses publications issued by and for the City and County agencies. - 1944: The City & County of Honolulu procured these buildings in an effort to ease the congestion of offices in City Hall (Honolulu Hale). Agency offices were located here for decades. - 2003: The City decided to renovate the auditorium from office spaces to its original state. The auditorium is currently used for City and County of Honolulu departmental activities, local, non-profit organizations can also use it, especially for cultural and arts events. All events must be free and open to the public. - 2010: The Mission Memorial Building (MMB) was renovated and houses the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, the Neighborhood Commission Office, and the Information and Complaints branches. The Department of Customer Services' Public Information Center is also located inside the building near the entrance. Okay, so it may seem to be "boring" to visit these agencies but I find it fascinating to discover and learn about the history of my home State of Hawai'i. You never realize how important water is until your kids need to use the bathroom, take a bath, or drink some water! I noticed the issue around 3pm as water was flooding the street and the Police were alerted. About an hour later the sewer/ water department showed up to start work on the emergency repair. We were without water for about 8 hours! I was very happy that the water department worked quickly to fix such a major break! They are unsung heroes and a great value to the community. Many will complain but never provide accolades for a job well done! We requested immediate service and the city came through! Keep up the great work!

All the libraries have hard copy books, audiobooks, kindle books, DVD's, CD's, magazines, newspapers, all sorts of classes (through Kanopy), tech classes, events for the keiki, and other stuff I don't have space to include. Just go and educate yourself and have fun. Oh yeah, you can renew your passport there, too!!! What's your excuse not to go, especially if book bans ever take effect, heaven forbid.

Brought my daughter here for the story-time on a Saturday morning. There was no free parking but…read morethere were plenty of metered parking spots on S King St, and I believe on the side street as well. The library was beautiful and well kept. The staff who was in charge of the story time did a great job! All the kids had a great time! Will definitely bring my daughter back for story telling or just to read books. My only complaint was there were many homeless people inside and outside of the library. More than half of the tables at the courtyard were occupied by them. And the smell of weed was everywhere...
