Orgiva is known as a "hippy town" with a van community camping on the outskirts and 25% of residents are ex-pats enjoying the health-conscious, outdoorsy, alternative healing, Bohemian-type community. Ex-pats represent 70 nations and many work remotely from their home countries.
The town is very picturesque itself, but has beautiful mountain views and access to hiking trails and other outdoor activities. There are an abundance of health food / natural healing stores in town.
We used the free parking lot at the base of the hill and walked through much of the town. The tourism office let us know about an offer where you can get a special €10 plate at each participating restaurant and do a crawl throughout the municipality to experience them all.
There is a large sculpture of Don Quixote's head outside of the library in Orgiva. I couldn't understand why because Orgiva is in the Granada province, not Castille-La Mancha, where the character famously travels. Orgiva is not on the Ruta del Quijote, however this library houses one of the most important collections of Don Quixote in Spain. So if you're a fan (I am not), the library is worth a visit!
I really appreciated the food offerings at the restaurants in Orgiva and we were pleased with the meal we had in town.
The entire municipality felt clean, safe, and friendly to everyone. It did not feel touristy though they had hospitality well covered. read more
