We walked there…read morebecause it was a 25 minute walk from where we were but on the way back, we ended up taking an Uber because it would have been a 35 minute walk back to our hotel, and there is no convenient public transportation from there. The museum is free with the Brussels Card, which is what we used. I would have been disappointed if we had to pay full price. The museum looks old and has a funky BO smell to it. It needs some upgrades. It was also pretty empty for a Saturday, so that's saying a lot. In the basement is where they house the human lifecycle exhibit and temporary exhibit. The temporary exhibit was actually pretty cool. It was different stations with different puzzles you had to solve. Kind of like a makeshift escape room. A very makeshift because all they did was put up black curtains everywhere. The rest of the museum upstairs was a lot of fake taxidermy animals that don't really describe their habits/habitats - just what they are. We probably spent an about 1.5 hours (the escape room exhibit took us about 1 hour already) before we were over it. Overall, a pretty underwhelming museum for two adults. There are some museums that cater to all ages, but this isn't one of them and could use a serious revamp.

You buy a ticket for this in the same lobby as the museum so you can kinda kill two birds with one stone, and I believe you get a little bit of a discount if you do both as well. When you first start going underground you immediately feel the temperature drop and the walls around you turn to old brick and stone. Now don't get me wrong, there's not actually a ton down here other than brick and concrete, but knowing how old it all is, is what makes this place truly mesmerizing. As you descend deeper into the tunnels you are given a ton of information as to what everything is, how and when it was built, and the map you have will give you even more info as well. Overall, the Coudenberg is such a cool experience and something I will remember for years to come. Seeing underneath the palace was so cool and I very much recommend checking this out if you are reading this, my only complaint, get some magnets in the gift shop that say the name of the exhibit on it.

Coudenberg was a small hill in uptown Brussels from the 11th to the late 18th century until it…read morebecame home to one of the greatest palaces in Europe. This was Charles V's main residence, burned down in 1731 and its ruins were built over in the 1770s, only to be uncovered over the past 30 years. The archaeological site immerses you in history from floor to ceiling. Holes along the walls of the cellars under the main building, which were once at ground level, give you an idea of how deep the palace has been buried. The basements show the scale of the grand ceremonial room, which no longer remains. Even more impressive is Rue Isabelle, an entire street that was vaulted over in the 18th century and converted into cellars. It's hard to imagine what's buried here when you're outside, passing through today's Place Royale, but it's worth finding out. The Coudenberg hosts exhibitions and family activities in English. Admission was €12 per adult reduced for children and seniors. They were restrooms underground. We spent two hours exploring, and I should've worn sneakers, it was tough in sandals.

The audio guide is included in the price, and you will want to get it as there are not many signs here, and the history is interesting. There is an English audio guide. You aren't forced to listen to everything, as you can just type in the buttons for what you want to hear. The staff were extremely friendly and encouraged me to try on the pieces of armour they had in the main floor, I had thought they were only for kids to check out and had passed by. The Porte de Hal was built in 1381 as one of six gateways which were part of the second set of defensive walls enclosing Brussels. This gate only survived because it was used as a prison, then later as a customs house, a grain storage, and even a Lutheran church. Between 1868 and 1870, the building was restored to what you see today. They took the medieval tower and touched it up with some romantic Neo Gothic extras. The entrance facing Saint- Gilles, is closest to the original appearance, and the entrance facing Brussels has the updated touches including the circular tower with a conical roof and turrets. It is this tower that houses the beautiful spiral stair case that you climb to reach the different levels of the museum and the ultimate panoramic view from the top. I would have just been happy to see the view and staircase, the rest was bonus. The other floors of the museum have a unique collection on information regarding the history of Brussels fortification system, the role of the trade guilds in Brussels (interesting after seeing all the Guild Houses in the Grand Place), and some armour including the parade armour of Archduke Albert of Austria. This was fascinating as it included the actual preserved hides of Albert's horses. You could even see the bullet wound that had killed one of the horses in battle. Per the audio guide these are some of the best preserved horses in the world. Whether you are a history buff or not, there is a bit of something here for everyone. Definitely a pleasant surprise.

(You can get an audio guide to listen to but some friendly information wouldn't go astray) The building seems to be undergoing some refurbishment so level three was completely empty (no mention of this from the staff) but the view from the top was spectacular! Be warned this is near a dodgy part of town so keep an eye on your personals. One piece of advice; the tour is 5 euro however it's only 1.50 euro if you are under 26 so if you have a fresh looking face say you're only 25 and save yourself some cash because it isn't worth 5 euro!

This used to be the building housing the German and Russian Embassies. The architecture is art deco and has been restored beautifully. You can walk around the grounds and enjoy the scultures which dot the grounds. The building has two floors of exhibit space and the basement has a few pieces, along with a tea salon which serves snacks and champagne. These water lily lights filled the atrium between the first and second floors. Entrance to the exhibitions is 10€, with discounts for seniors and free for children under 12.

The museum was nearly empty the entire time I was there, and I was the only visitor in the building with the textile exhibit. However, there was some sort of filming going on in the stairwell in the building with the textile exhibit, and I had to wait five minutes for them to finish before I could pass through, which was annoying. I guess with the museum being so dead, they didn't expect any visitors. Speaking about stairs, the museum did have an elevator, but it was not in service, and even if it were, not all exhibits were accessible -- some of the rooms and exhibits were only accessible by stairs. The security was also weird and included having to buzz in to speak to security over an intercom before being allowed in. As of September 2024, the museum is closed for renovations for three years. Once you head up the stairs and pay, you are immediately submerged into endless information about the creation of Belgian comics, the history, and even statues of non Belgian characters like Goku from Dragon Ball and Porco Rosso from Studio Ghibli. The middle floor of the museum was full of comic strips, art, and an insane amount of information that wrapped around and brought you back to the staircase where you could go upstairs. The third floor was my personal favourite as it was where the Smurfs room was. When you enter you are immediately shown a replica of the village and a ton of merchandise everywhere. Guess what happens when you walk a little further? You get to see one of the mushroom houses! I also wanted a photo with the big painted wall but there was a class in session so I figured my 35 year old self wouldn't interrupt it for an Instagram photo. Overall, the Comics Art Museum is a mesmerizing place for any fan of comics, cartoons, or art in general to experience. Okay, sure, I am more enthusiastic than most to visit a sewage museum, as I once kept myself looking busy while working for a water engineering firm by making fake travel brochures for a fake travel company that catered to retired water engineers. I also wonder why I didn't go get a job with the The Global Network of Water Museums. Alas, this has warped my life since then and I keep finding myself drawn to WWTPs and excitedly pointing out water control elements to my (less than excited) friends. I long ago swore never to work for engineers again and have forgotten the ranking of my favorite TBMs, but I cannot stop the water engineer tourism. Even if you don't suffer from my particular affliction, you will probably enjoy the Musée des égouts. The displays are concise and make it obvious how covering and then re-routing the Senne has saved Belgians from cholera, flooding, and other assorted unpleasantness. Normally I hate audio tours, but theirs is truly a delight. It's quirky and charming. Sure, the wall text is in French and Flemish, but it is not nearly as entertaining as the audio guide. The website suggests you reserve a ticket. I assumed this was a holdover from the height of the pandemic and probably it would not be so mobbed that I couldn't get in. Indeed, reservations were not necessary. They are not kidding about sending you down to view the underground channel the Senne runs through and the sewer, so wear close toed shoes that you are okay with...getting a little dirty. That part of the tour is closed on rainy days, so this is not a good rainy day museum. The Newtown Creek WWTP remains my great love (obviously) but I highly recomend the Musée des égouts.

While the infographics were in French, they provided us with books to follow along in English, which was nice, but still not exactly what we were expecting. Then, we discovered the lower level. They had many more exhibits, a reconstruction of a sewer tunnel for you to walk through, and also... AN ACTUAL SEWER! We were confused at first, but one of the hilarious employees personally escorted us down to the sewer level of the museum and walked with us through the sewer to the second building of the museum (that we hadn't even noticed because it was across the street)! I will not lie, it was a sewer so it did not smell good, it was moist, and it was dark. But it was an actual sewer that we were able to walk through! There's a grated platform throughout that you walk on as you explore. While it is sturdy, it is not stable and it can be a little slippery, but overall the museum is a very fun, one-of-a-kind experience that I will be recommending to EVERYONE! Absolutely unbeatable, especially for the price! Go!
