A must visit for anyone who visit Rome. Extensive works by many famous artists including Caravaggio. The use of an audio guide is highly recommended instead of a tour guide. MUST RESERVE AHEAD OF TIME! Reservations are not even recommended. They're REQUIRED! If you're planning to use your Roma pass for this attraction, just make sure you mention you'll have a pass when you're reserving it. Time slots begin every two hours, starting at 9 a.m., so this means you get a max of two hours to explore the museum. But I didn't really need the full two hours. Tip - Bus 53 goes there, straight from the Colosseum, if you're planning to visit there first. Just pay attention to which stop you need to get off at. read more

Its nice has some azzedine alaïa couture on display throughout the museo. But headset not included in admission price €5 for headset. We didnt have one so basically a waste! You will have to check bags downstairs bc they dont want you bumping into items! Whole place in side pretty cool. Detailed paintwork on the ceilings. Sculptures are nice. Molding is beautiful. Overall wishing it had more and provided head phones! It is really small enjoy the grounds instead. I noticed you can rent segways and a four person man power bike to take around the park. Booked a tour of Borghese Gallery with Viator. They subbed the tour out to a third party. The tour guide never showed up for the tour. The guide had the tickets, so everyone that booked the tour was refused entry to the gallery. Viator refused to refund the money for services not rendered. They are a disreputable company and not to be trusted. Do NOT do business with them. They ruined our entire day in Rome! read more

This museum is definitely a must see. Entry is timed to 2 hour slots for a limited number of people, so it is highly recommended that you buy a ticket on-line ahead of time to reserve a spot. 2 hours is plenty of time to make your way through the Villa. The collection of art, sculptures & frescos are absolutely stunning for a small location. The Bernini sculptures especially just took my breath away. It was as if life was carved into stone! And some of the frescos painted have a 3D effect. I don't have an art background so I certainly don't have any detailed knowledge of these pieces but loved the collection, it would be hard not to appreciate it. Perhaps my favorite museum experience during my trip to Italy. The Borghese Gallery is not a normal art gallery, the most exquisite paintings are not hanging from the wall, instead they are frescoes present as a part of the ceilings and walls. Every room had a theme, selected sculptures and decorative paintings lines the room, but the center of attention is above and all around you. Each room had multilingal layout guides that maps out the art works in the room and serves as explanations for the stories, artists and motivations behind each of the paintings. The engagement of appreciating art by being surrounded by 360 degrees of them is something extraordinary. Gallery admission is done on two hour blocks throughout the day. Do purchase the tickets online early since they were sold out for many days at the admission counter the day-of. Everyone was asked to empty the gallery at the end of their allocated time block before the next guests were ushered in. Excellent and clever crowd control, as evidenced by our experience over the next few days at various other world famous museums. We got to enjoy the gallery fully - though for the limited time, without being rushed or feel pressured to press on. Oh, and if you have a few spare moments, drop by the cafe and have a cup of cappuccino or expresso, they are delicious. Borghese, you've got my love, from your ice cappuccinos to your exquisite and unique way of presenting art. read more

The Museo e Galleria Borghese should definitely be on your must see list of museums in Rome. The number of visitors allowed in the galleries at any one time is limited. You are assigned an entrance time when you purchase your tickets and there is a nice cafe and beautiful grounds to see while you wait for your turn. Limiting the number of visitors really enhances the experience as you can get "up close and personal" with the exhibits without having others invade your personal space taking selfie's etc. . This is especially important in viewing the Bernini sculptures. These were absolutely fantastic and there is no substitute for actually seeing them. Pictures just don't capture the three dimensionality of these marvelous creations. I am a museum freak and the Borghese is in the top tier of museums I have visited. It may seem a bit inconvenient to visit but is well worth the time, effort and expense. read more

We bought tickets through a third party which proved to be no good for us and about another dozen visitors. They staff at the Borghese could not have been more helpful or professional. They asked us to stand to the said and said that they viewed us as being their guests and they would try to get us on since there is a limit of 300 guests per two hour segments. In a short period of time they let us in and the collection was fantastic. Sculptures, paintings, beautiful grounds in a scenic park. Well worth the time for a visit and a great value! read more

I will go out a limb and say that this place is a must if you are in Rome. The museum itself will take a couple of hours or more, I am personally on the slow side at museums and I took about exactly two hours. There is a severe lack of information and brochures at the museum. Their brochure is just an empty map, and there is 0 information for the works displayed, except for the artist and the title. There are plates? That have explanations in each gallery, but you won't find them in every gallery and often the English versions will be missing. I actually felt pretty jealous of the people who were doing guided tours, and from the look of these tours I would recommend them. read more

If I could give the Borghese Gallery 10 stars I would. The art work, sculptures, mosaics, etc. STUNNING!!! Add this to your must go to list while in Rome. Many ways to have a tour. We booked through Walks, which is part of City Experiences. The tour guide we had was Laura Sensi. She was excellent. Very passionate about art, knows her stuff and her English was excellent. You can go to the museum without a tour, but having one made the experience so much better. Not matter how you go, get a ticket ahead of time. They sell out. This is an almost perfect museum, but get your tickets in advance! It's lovely because it is a good size, but not overwhelming like the Vatican Museum or Louvre. You walk in at your allotted time and are greeted with a grand entry with beautiful paintings, sculptures, and mosaic tile floors, which is a perfect introduction of what one will see throughout the rest of the building. For a smaller space it is jammed packed with famous art. If you are a fan of Bernini sculptures and/or Caravaggio paintings you definitely feel like you get your moneys worth with fine examples of both of their works. Since they only have a certain allotment of tickets for each of the two hour blocks the space never feels too crowded, unlike the previously mentioned museums. Yes, at first the famous sculptures have tons of people around them because everyone wants to see them, but after wandering around the space for a little bit head upstairs, look around, take your time. Then head back downstairs and you are able to easily navigate the sculptures after the initial rush to see everything abates. Two hours is plenty of time with the collection, but make sure you get your tickets in advance because as they said at the ticket kiosk, "if you haven't already booked, it is impossible." Even if you only have a few days in the city it is worth stopping by and visiting the Gallery to see the beautiful space of one of the wealthiest families and to see an art collection that is second to none. read more

Saves you the line and streamlines your appreciation of the gallery and art in a realistic time frame. So many places in Rome will swallow you up for the entire day, but most people I know only go to the city for less than a week... so advance planning and preparation can help when trying to avoid losing time in lines and walking aimlessly about the museums without knowledge or purpose. Borghese gallery was handed over to the state after the Borghese family went bankrupt. Inside, you'll find all kinds of treasures, like original Bernini and Carravaggio works. That just scratches the surface.... this place is worth putting on your list. You'll want to see if you can do spanish steps the same day. When I strolled through the Villa Borghese park on a Sunday in September, the attendance to the museum and art gallery had been sold out for several days ahead, until the end of the week. So you have to be aware of this unfortunate possibility, especially considering the fact that Villa Borghese is situated away from the historical city center of Rome, called Centro Storico, and one must take transportation to get here. Therefore, your advanced online reservations are a must. Apparently your visit is limited to two hours of enjoyment once you make the online reservations, then exchange your voucher for the actual tickets upon arrival. Public is let to enter in groups/ herds for their allocated time slot by the timed start, and is kicked out at the end of the two-hour tour. Magnificent, breathtaking, impressive, and gorgeous are all the appropriate synonyms to describe the paintings and sculptures in the museum. Classic. ------------------------ Side note: perhaps I take yelping a bit too seriously and take my time reviewing places, which proved difficult while on the go, traveling. I guess I'm lucky to stay put in one place long enough to be able to keep some track of my movements. Regardless, I notice that when I don't do it right away, I tend to forget to do it all together. Rome is a veritable trove of treasures and in my view, the Borghese Gallery is an unmissable jewel that has to be seen to be believed. It's a little distance away from the main centre of Rome and to be sure of arriving on time for my pre-booked slot, I took a cab to the park in which it sits, actually arriving a little early for it's opening that morning. That allowed me time to observe the comedy centurions parading outside and to read up on the treasures inside. That homework still did not prepare me for the jaw dropping experience of a couple of hours inside this amazing building. Exchanging the pre-booked voucher for my entrance ticket was reasonably painless and I found the atmosphere welcoming and encouraging. The booking policy means that the gallery didn't feel too full or crowded, allowing plenty of time to take photos. The vast array of splendid statues and perfect paintings are almost an assault on the senses - there is so much splendour here that your head and heart will swim as you try to take it all in. Bernini is the star of the show, of course, but the gallery upstairs has a number of Raphael's as well. An absolute stunner of a gallery and a must see. read more

People say it's hard to impress Italians. Maybe those "people" are Italians. Maybe it's just me. But honestly, we have the Vatican, Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Roman Forum, and many other breathtaking monuments just inside the ancient walls that circle past Aventine Hill. The Galleria Borghese is a prime destination to visit for tourists and natives. The beautiful villa that once belonged to a cardinal, who loved curating precious artworks, houses some of the most spectacular sculptures and paintings in the world. Since the line to get in or buy tickets practically runs down the Borghese gardens, they limit visits to 2 hours, otherwise the place would be swamped. In my experiences, 2 hours is not enough time to take in the entire thing, so appreciate but don't gawk! :) Buy tickets in advance so you won't be stuck outside when they're sold out... and buy an audio guide! For 5 euros, it makes a world of difference. My criticisms are for the 2 hours, uninformative website that doesn't recommend/warn online reservations, and indifferent/rude staff. I can't seriously blame them because they are dealing with tourists all day, but it still reminds me that I'm in barbaric Rome (and not heaven). Enjoy and don't miss out! read more

Great collection of Bernini sculptures (The Rape of Preserving is my favorite) and Caravaggio paintings. Reserve at least several days before your visit. Our tour guide, which we reserved with our ticket) was very good. We would have appreciated only 10% without her. The mansion is gorgeous. The statues and sculptures are some of the most impressive works of art I've had the privilege to view with my own eyes. Several of the paintings are also fascinating. Reservations for a 2 hour visit are pretty much required. Location: About a 20-30 minute walk from the center of Rome, depending on which route you take. The place: First, the building (and surrounding buildings) is beautiful. Secondly, the massive park that spreads out before it (Villa Borghese) is absolutely phenomenal. If I lived in Rome, I would be running through that park every single day. The general emplacement of the park and museum offers you a much needed break from the hustle and bustle of Rome. It's quiet, peaceful and secluded. The art: Definitely one of my favorite museums, for it's fabulous sculptors by some of Rome's best artists. I mean, you can't go wrong with this museum. You must look up when you visit the museum because the ceilings offer you beautiful paintings. You just want to lie down on the floor and stare up at them. One of the definite perks of this place is that they only allow 300 people in every 2 hours, so there is no pushing or shoving, no one getting into your personal space and pressing up against you to gaze into the eyes of a sculpture. I saved this for the end of my stay in Rome and I'm glad I did. Price point: 11 Euro, and remember to book online before you leave so you can skip the lines. read more

This impressive park, villa and gallery is surprisingly less of a tourist madhouse than the other more popular "Bucket List" galleries in Rome (but do go early in the day). You'll need to do your homework before visiting and definitely purchase the rather pricey tickets in advance. Also, having a layout of the grounds and the interior is a real plus in managing your time and fatigue factor (see Rick Steves guidebook). Today was my first trip back here in 23 years and this place is as amazing as I remember. The gorgeous paintings and sculptures make this a grand opulent museum even though it's housed in a small 2 story building. Do stroll through the Villa Borghese gardens for amazing city views of Rome. It's easily accessible by Spagna red line Metro station & Villa Borghese is a short 0.5 mile walk from this stop. Tickets are good for 2 hours which is more than enough time to view everything. I suggest buying online tickets as the museum does sell out on certain days especially Monday. read more

Take the audio tour. It adds so much to the experience. You need to get tickets and reserve your audio tour in advance. During the tourist season, it's hard to get a ticket less than a week in advance.. You can order them before you go to Italy from the website. Tours are in two hour increments. You are required to pick up your tickets 30 minutes in advance of your reserved time. Do NOT be late. You may lose your tickets. You will also be required to check you bags. At the end of your two hours, everyone is asked to leave the gallery so the next group can come in. So, mind your time. I have difficulty getting through the gallery in two hours. There is so much to see. They have a small gift shop and a coffee shop in which to kill time while you are waiting for you entry time. Or you can sit outside and enjoy the view. And as a previous reviewer said, take a taxi. Walking there is all up hill. You do NOT want to be tired when you enter this amazing place. read more

Don't bother going there. They are rude. No same day tickets. Supposedly this rule has been in place since last century. Unless you buy your ticket a year ahead, forget about visiting. Btw, the policy of selling ticket changes if the lady at the ticket counter likes you or not. Most racists place I have ever seen. Wow, this gallery is amazing. The surrounding grounds are amazing. Get the gist? My favorite part is that it was pretty organized IMO. They only allow for 2 hours and people generally abide by that. We opted for the very first showing of the morning and they promptly started. It was a bit confusing because you have to go in, get your tickets, check your bags, and then go back up for security. All through the same narrow door you came in through! The audio guides were quite obnoxious as you had to hold them up to your ear like a phone to listen to them. By the time I got upstairs, I was sick and tired of holding it up to my ear, so I eventually stopped altogether! Even so, I loved everything about the gallery. You might want to research some ancient Greek/Roman mythology before you visit because many of the pieces have to do with it, or consider getting an audio guide. I really enjoyed this museum. Why is it so special to me? 1. It is set in the beautiful villa borghese garden which is utterly gorgeous and perfect for an afternoon stroll after your museum visit. 2. It is by reservation only. So you get to breathe, unlike visiting museums like the uffizi, the louvre, the Vatican museum where your pictures have lots of other tourists and you feel compelled to rush through the museum just to escape the crowd. That being said, I would choose this as my top attraction in Rome simply because the city is so overcrowded by tourists and here you get to enjoy peace, beauty, and art without feeling annoyed by terribly long wait times and crowds. read more

Honestly, this gentleman has a very impressive art collection. Galleria Borghese is probably the best museum in Rome, and it rests in a beautiful park surrounded by artistic decorations. The audio guide will be a big help, as there is just so much information and history behind this gallery that you'll most certainly want to hear about it all as you walk through its halls. Wow! And I mean...WOW! This is Italian opulence at its finest....aside from what you will find in the Vatican. As soon as you walk in the main floor you will be in awe of the entire room from the floors to the walls and up to the ceiling! Works by Bernini, Raphael, and Caravaggio, among others, will take your breath away! I can't even imagine what this place looked like before Napoleon swindled 154 statues, 160 busts, 170 bas-reliefs, 30 columns and various vases away! Pro tip! Make sure to budget your time wisely because you only really get 1:45 of time of the 2 hours allotted. Also, order your tickets in advance or you will find yourself walking all the way into the museum only to realize it's been sold out for 2 weeks! Well-known museum all across Europe. There are some very famous paintings here and a collection of stunning statues by Bernini, but it's honestly worth it to see the building alone. Imagine the most ornate rooms conceivable....triple that and you have the Villa Borghese. Mind-boggling. There are a LOT of very large paintings and sculpture packed in here. The tickets are timed for 2 hours, but that is the right amount of time to see everything. It is not too large. BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE on their website. It sells out a lot. Also, the museum closes at 7pm, but they close the gift shop before 7pm, so if you have 5pm-7pm tickets, hit the gift shop first. There is a free coat/bag check, which is nice. read more

Really not my thing, but the Borghese Gallery contains important art. You may not like it, but you should go see it if you're in Rome. And if you do go, buy your tickets weeks in advance. It sells out daily. We watched a poor couple go up to the desk and try to buy tickets, and the rude people working the desk basically laughed in their faces. Don't worry, Paris: Romans are more rude than you! Eat something beforehand, because there are approximately five seats in the cafe. You can easily get tickets online ~1-2 weeks before (they open a month before). I saw multiple people in front of me try to buy tickets the day of (despite a sign that said they were booked for the next few days) and all were turned away. They are strict about ticket allotments, which definitely prevented crowded. Your ticket affords you two hours in the museum. I'd recommend being there in either the first 30 min or last for minimal occupancy of the museum. At the Borghese, you'll find the Pauline Bonaparte sculpture by Canova and other famous art pieces. Each room is packed with glorious ceiling art, sculptures, and paintings. Once you're done, you can take a stroll outside in the gardens or the big park its located in. read more
