I had been reading so much history about the Camino and how the Knights Templar protected the pilgrims in their journey here to Santiago. This was a dream to see the living history here!!! Do not miss the archives and the Templar library with hand drawn and gilded manuscripts and books! One of the largest in the world dating back to the 1100 AD when the Templar's were around. Highly really recommend must stop. There is a hostel up the street from the castle that I could not find on the map but was wonderful and had great Spanish tortillas.

The Museum highlights the importance of the popular devotion to St. James and the development of the pilgrimage routes to his tomb which started in the High Middle Ages, particularly in Europe. It consists of eight rooms which explain the origins of the cult of St. James through images, objects and documents, as well as the beginnings and evolution of the pilgrimages, how the different routes and the town of Santiago de Compostela gradually took shape, and the influence of these pilgrimages on the artistic development of this city's crafts guilds. The Museum is Centrally located, across from the Entrance to the Cathedral of Santiago Compostela. On Saturday's there is no admission fee.

I highly recommend checking out this museum if you have an interest in local culture and history of the region. Also, it might be a good spot to visit if you want to take a bit of a break from the pilgrims. ;) The building itself is absolutely amazing. I believe it used to be a Dominican Church/monastery (but don't quote me on that). Most of the displays focused on the local prehistoric and modern history of Galicia. For the most part, I thought the museum was well-organized. However, there were a couple of times when I was led back into gallery rooms that I previously visited. However, perhaps that was more on me not paying attention to where I was walking. With easy viewing, I think a regular visit will take about 45-1.5 hours depending on how long you view specific displays. Overall, I highly recommend taking a few moments to visit el Museo do Pobo Galego - especially on a rainy day.

The location is accessible from city centre as it is only a 10- or 15-minute walk. Appreciation of the museum begins with the building itself. It is a lovely 13th-century former Dominican Church that has been restored to excellent condition. The building is an interesting place to wander. The unique triple-ramp spiral staircase is the highlight among the building's architectural features. It is also worth taking a couple to minutes to admire the courtyard. There are displays that document the seafaring history of Galicia. The traditional occupational pursuits of the region are featured along with local handicrafts. Traditional regional clothing through different eras is also highlighted. In addition, exhibits for music, housing and architecture are prominent. There is a demonstration of local artwork and a feature on literature and printed media. Most of the descriptions for the exhibits are in the local Galician language but there are placards within the various areas that give decently detailed explanations in English. The visuals allow a good appreciation of the items even without the written accompaniments. If you have any interest in learning more about that which encompasses the cultural makeup of the Galego people, this will be a treat. In short, make sure to put it on your agenda. The €3 fee is well worth it.

When it come to my vacations there is nothing that I enjoy more than visiting historical sites and…read morelast week I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Torre de Hércules in La Coruña during my vacation, and it was nothing short of awe-inspiring! This lighthouse is not only a magnificent architectural marvel, but it also carries with it centuries of history. Originally built in the 2nd century by the Romans, the Torre de Hércules is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It was constructed under the reign of Emperor Trajan and is believed to have been designed by the architect Gaius Sevius Lupus. The tower served as a guiding beacon for ships navigating the treacherous waters along the northwestern coast of Spain. Getting to the site involves a fairly steep walk up a hill, and once you're there, you'll need to climb the stairs to reach the top of the tower. It's a workout, for sure, so I recommend being in decent physical condition if you plan to make the ascent. But trust me, the climb is well worth it--the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see the stunning Galician coastline stretch for miles! What makes this site even more impressive is how well it's been preserved and maintained. Since 2009, it's been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ensuring its careful conservation and protection. Inside the tower, there are informative displays that take you through its historical significance, adding depth to the visit. I couldn't give anything less than a five stars on this review, because whether you're a history buff or just looking for a unique landmark to visit, Torre de Hércules is a must-see in La Coruña!
