A must visit if you are in São Paulo! I went in March and admission was free (R$0,00). There was a…read moreline to get in, but it moved pretty quickly. You will walk through a security metal detector right before you are let inside the main entryway of the interior. I traveled from Pinheiros - I took the metro from Faria Lima station to Luz station. A one-way ticket for the metro should be R$4,30. There is a huge park across from Luz station where I walked through and explored a bit before locating Pinacoteca. Pinacoteca had some of my favorite exhibits on display when I was there. I kind of felt like I was in an NYC museum. Yes, there were a good amount of people inside, but it was not overly crowded and there were plenty of areas to disperse to if you prefer to see things with few people to no one around. I did have a hard time trying to figure out where the real exit was though, haha. I went so many different ways that seemed to lead to a dead-end (emergency exit door that I was afraid to try to open in case an alarm would sound). There is a cafe at the bottom floor by the main exit once you do find it. The line was pretty much by the door. I took a peek inside and it appeared like a buffet almost but I could be wrong. Must have been good cause they were crowded. I remember walking by the outdoor dining area on way to the entrance of the museum from the park and it looked busy. There is a small museum store outside with colorful umbrellas, tote bags, books, shirts, and other merchandise. The museum is also multi-level - elevator accessible as well as stairways on every corner I think (or at least on two opposite ends of the building). Ubers can pick you up / drop you off from the street side that faces the front of the museum.

Great museum with very representative works from Brazilian and Paulista culture. There are also…read moregreat expositions of renowned artists.

I came here for the first time for the Hitchcock Expo, which was truly amazing. It was so well done, incredibly well-organized, and I thought it was a great value for the price. I came here a few weeks later for a showing of The Shining with a live band and that was a really crazy unique experience as well. I'd never been to a movie showing with a live band before and it was so intense, especially in a movie like The Shining. I recommend the MIS to everyone. Check out their website and see what special events are happening and make sure you go to at least one of them! There was a little market in the front courtyard of the museum when I went for The Shining and they were selling lots of artesanal foods and crafts. Eu amo esse museu! Vim aqui pela primeira vez quando teve a exposição do Hitchcock. Foi muito legal. Super bem organizado e não foi caro. Eu me diverti muito. Algumas semanas depois, eu voltei aqui pra assistir o filme The Shining com a banda tocando músicas ao vivo. Foi uma experiência única! Tomei muitos sustos. Certamente voltarei a próxima vez que eu estiver em São Paulo!

Access to the space is very well organised with polite & helpful security personnel at the gates with well informed staff indoors. I was there for the 'Picasso - Savant Hand, Savage Eye' exposition - on the very day it opened, buying tickets online was a breeze and R$ 12 paid was really a steal. I really think that all these galleries should charge in order to maintain the space. The Picasso exposition was well organised with 2 separate spaces showcasing several artworks of Picasso that includes paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints throughout his life. Also there are several photographs of the Spanish Master. To add, there is a film on the 'making of' Picasso's most famous work of art 'Guernica'. The entire space and ambience is really pleasant, there is a sense of calm in the building and although photographs are allowed indoors, it doesn't really hamper the movement of the audience. There are several security personnel close to the art to ensure that you don't really get too close. Also there is a permanent space indoors with artworks by Tomie Ohtake - at the time I went there were 7-8 works of art, I'm not sure whether the artwork changes according to a theme - but for sure its a permanent space dedicated to the patron of the institute. Besides the space for exhibitions, the institute also houses a restaurant, book shop and other spaces for education and lectures. This is a great space and I would return several time for other exhibitions.

Renowned for her oversized paintings and airy, cleverly balanced sculptures, Ohtake is considered among Brazil's most important contemporary artists. I enjoyed my time in the museum.
