Frans Hals wasn't initially on my radar, but I fell in love with some of his paintings during my visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. His lively brushwork and sense of humor definitely catch the eye! However, be warned that majority of this collection isn't actually Frans Hals: unlike the Van Gogh Museum, which is probably 80-90% Van Gogh, here there's one main room with about 12-15 of his major works, and the rest of the collection is from other Dutch contemporaries. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the museum is still entertaining. The galleries are beautiful, with a nice combination of sculpture, decorative arts, and paintings. And there are convenient lockers for storing your belongings while you browse! It's a cool experience to view some of Frans Hals' classic pieces in the town where he lived and worked. But since this is a smaller museum with a narrow focus, I wouldn't dedicate more than an hour or two to your visit.

Overall I enjoyed learning the history and different periods of which women used handbags. It was so cool to see the historical purses to the modern purses. Wow, if I had more room in my suitcase I could've definitely purchased a bag or two in their gift shop that had some cool handbags for sale. A small museum, located on the "Gentleman's Graacht" in Amsterdam's canal district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This museum is fascinating, and the exhibits are incredibly well designed. It takes the history of purses and bags back to the 1600s, when men were all about the purse. Another plus is that it's in an old canal house, which is fascinating all on it's own as a place to explore. The collection is enormous, and extremely well curated and researched. I was completely absorbed, as was my boyfriend! I loved the exhibits that displayed famous women's purses, and the contents! Haven't you always wondered what the Queen of England and Princess Grace carry around in their purse? I know I have, and now I know! Learned a new Dutch word: MANNENTASSEN = man bag! Why should the ladies have all the fun, and why should men overstuff their pockets? The museum is a perfect size, as you can spend a couple hours here, before "museum fatigue" sets in, and still feel like you saw everything, and learned some things. The café attached is elegant and sunny. The service is a little slow, but who minds, as you get to hang out in a beautifully appointed canal house. The gift shop is the best part!!! Many purses for sale, from high end, to bags for people like me. Accessories, fun doo-dads and other relevant miscellania are on offer. So worth a visit. I loved it!

Then the collection: what is there not to like? The museum has several areas of specialty interests (glass v. statues v. objects) and they deliver lectures in the weekends. The changing exhibition has featured top pieces from Italy, and I am always learning something new when I visit. Plus the Museum Jaar Kaart is valid here. Since it's located in downtown Amsterdam I hop on the tram or hoof it down from Central Station. Wonderful institution!

I thought the place was rather small with not many exhibits. A lot of things would take up entire rooms all by themselves. I usually like to browse around in museums but I walked through the whole thing in about 10 minutes. I even walked around a bit extra because I thought to myself, that can't be all, well it was. We just meandered on our own there wasn't an official tour guide but there was lots to see. The museum is a homage to Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who was a wealthy cloth merchant and banker of Scottish descent, who bequeathed his fortune for the advancement of religion, art, and science. It was the center for enlightenment study and education.

The lady who helped us was quite accommodating and nice, and she made it more fun. Good thing I had my email with me from booking the appointment which I pre-paid for, because she didn't see it in her system for some reason. After the photos, we visited the museum (included in the I Amsterdam pass) and got to look at a number of fun costumes and hats, including some modern reinterpretations of old style Dutch hats. It's a petite museum, so it wouldn't take too long to go through, but if you enjoy fashion and clothing, this is worth a stop in to check it out. The photos are either 30 or 35 Euros and can accommodate large groups or families. I enjoyed getting to try on the wooden shoes, and learning that farmers would do field work in these shoes, because their feet stayed dry and warm. And they did seem to stay warm in those shoes, so learned something new there.

The main attraction is the panorama painting of the beach area in Hague in the 1800's. It was magnificent! I believe they mentioned six artists painted it in 4 months. They also have sand surrounding the bottom so it looks like you're in the picture. Amazing!
