This place has a few different parts to it - Museum, Museum Cafe, and Special Event Space…read more
* Museum - covers 'native peoples' in the tropics and Africa and is surprisingly non-offensive and non-condescending. I was expecting photos of brown people in chains on boats, but it's a lot more respectful than that. I only ran through here once quickly, but it seemed interesting and historically accurate.
* Museum Cafe - You can only get here by paying for museum admission, it's not separately accessible. The cafe tries to serve foods from around the world, specifically from the African and tropical countries covered in the museum. The concept is interesting, but the execution isn't gourmet or anything. It's ok for cafe food. The space is huge and sunny, and there is outdoor seating which looks out onto a small grassy space with a pond and a big tree before, which is a relaxing view.
* Special Event Space - The cafe can be rented out for special events in the evenings. I had my wedding reception here in September, and overall we were pretty happy with it.
The reasons we originally chose the TropenInstituut for our reception were:
- it was close to a canal docking point, so our wedding boat was able to dock across the street and everyone could easily walk from the boat to the reception dinner.
- It was available on relatively short notice - only 3 months before the wedding, since apparently this is not a well-known reception place. Our native Amsterdam guests were pleasantly surprised when they got here because it was so nice inside but they'd never heard of anyone having parties there before.
- They had enough outdoor seating space that we had the option to hold our dinner inside or outside depending on how the weather was that day. We had the flexibility to tell the reception coordinator the morning of the reception which way we chose to go, which was great. We lucked out on the weather and had a nice dinner outside on the terrace overlooking the pond in the sunset, and people were really happy being able to eat outside.
- They were not crazy expensive, just a little expensive.
- Their reception menu also tries to stay focused on dishes from Africa, Asia, and the Tropics, but they're willing to accommodate special requests. We had a nice mix of 'exotic' foods with some standard Czech and American foods thrown in for family and guests, like potato pancakes and cheeseburgers. They even made a vegan dish or two for some vegan guests, which ended up being popular with everyone. The Greek Salad especially was a big hit.
- They also offered a nice variety of alcohol. Their hard alcohol bottle charges were through the nose, but if you take advantage of their international beer selection you only pay for what your guests consume.
All of this sounded great in theory, and in practice it ended up being a really nice reception, with a dance floor with palm trees and nice lighting, and a nice large outdoor space where people could smoke and chat.
The only upsetting part of the evening was when we arrived at the reception with all our guests and the reception coordinator told me she couldn't remember how she numbered the tables on the multiple drawings she made of the space for us. So she just picked a table number order at random that morning, which meant that my seating chart was rendered meaningless. Everything was reversed and jumbled, with family members sitting far away, and acquaintances getting prime up-close tables. I don't know how a reception coordinator can lose track of something as important as the order and placement of table numbers, but there it was, and there was nothing I could do about it because she only told me once everyone arrived and were already sitting down.
Overall, I would recommend this place for a reception, but be aware that the coordinator isn't that detailed oriented, and you might need to compensate for that by say, printing out a copy of your seating chart and handing it to her in person, because e-mailing it beforehand doesn't really work with her. Other than that, everyone had a lovely time here.
