Thank you MuseumsNacht 2012 for this great find. I wouldn't have known this place existed without this great event. This museum is located in Stein am Rhein on the main street in the center of this medieval Swiss town. The town itself is fantastic. The museum is open from 1 March to late October daily from 10 am to 5pm. The museum has friendly translation cards in several different languages located on the walls of each room. I fell in love with this museum instantly (except for the scary doll exhibit they currently have on display in a back room). When you enter the museum you feel as if you have stepped back into time and have been transported automatically to the 19th century. The front part of the house is said to date back to 1270, and the rear part to 1712. You are able to walk freely throughout the house without glass or ropes hindering your visit. You can walk through the main four floors of living quarters through a interior courtyard to the adjoining agricultural rear part of the house used by the servants and to store the grain, etc. It is hard not to get goosebumps as you walk through this museum. It is like walking through a movie set. You feel as if at any minute the owners of the house could come back and shoo you out, or invite you to a warm meal. There is even one room in the house that you can touch anything, play the games, sleep on the straw mattress, try on the clothes, etc. I know my nieces would have loved this museum. This is a great place for a family outing. My husband who typically does not like museums, walked out of this place commenting on how cool it was. That says alot. read more
