The Musical Swings at the Fort Ben Cultural Center are so cool! They're literally what they sound like: swings that make music! There are 10 individual swings, and each carries a different note when you swing. Swing all or some of them at the same time, and you'll create a beautiful song. This is one of the most interactive and amazing pieces of public art that I've seen in Indy.
My children wanted to hear what it sounded like when all 10 swings were swinging together, so they set out to swing all of them at the same time. Luckily, we visited on a cold day when there wasn't anyone else there. The song that these swings creates is beautiful but kind of melancholy: kind of like listening to a Radiohead song from their Amnesiac period.
The Musical Swings are a permanent fixture of the Fort Ben Cultural Campus, and they are open year round. The ground is covered in that soft rubber kind of padding, so if your kids fall off the swings (or launch themselves from the swings mid-air, like mine did), the ground will cushion their fall. read more
