Another great place and in a prime location of Hollywood. We got to see the House Band run through their set for later in the afternoon at the Whiskey at the Musicians Institute. This is like heaven for a musician. Musicians Institute has everything you could want whether it be singing/songwriting or learning to DJ you can learn it here. We learned on the tour they offer several options from certificates to full blown degrees. The room they got to perform in had a great set-up. The sound was great and there was plenty of seating and a decent size stage. We met a few of the Staff and Instructors and everyone was great. They took the time to show the kids around and explain what the Institute has to offer. The parents also got a tour of the facilities and they are quite impressive. One thing we noticed (which may seem odd) was the cork boards around the campus. They had fliers and posters for upcoming events and artists looking for other artists. We thought this was amazing because whether you are looking for a drummer or singer or whatever there were plenty of places to sort of advertise your needs to grab the attention of possible future band mates. It was nice because it brings people together. We have known a few people who have gone to Musicians Institute and really loved it. It is a great place to learn and grow as a musician and very welcoming. read more

I'm currently enrolled in the APE program, and having an absolute BLAST!! I don't have any goals other than being fully present and paying attention to opportunities that present themselves, meanwhile staying open to life providing the best experience possible for me (cuz life knows better what I need than I do). I'm paying attention in classes (and actually showing up), doing the homework (and enjoying it), and getting to connect with not only the professors, but the students as well. My favorite aspect of being a student here is that I'm getting to discover myself as an artist and musician on a level I've yet to experience. This place has the potential to be a magical experience for anyone who's open to having one while enrolled here. I took the Independent Artist Program (IAP) about a year ago and am currently enrolled in the Artist Producer Entrepreneur (APE) program. Both programs offer solid classes in music theory and understanding how to use a DAW, which is great. However, neither course is really designed with EDM or trance producers in mind, like myself. There are required classes--like songwriting--that clearly cater more to singer/songwriter types, along with a few others that feel more like filler and don't offer much value if your focus is electronic music. Overall, MI is a great place to get started with music and learn traditional instruments like guitar or piano. But if your main goal is to produce strictly electronic music, you might want to consider other options. MI definitely leans more towards singer/songwriters and instrumentalists. A lot of the classes I took just didn't apply to the kind of music I create. I'd recommend MI if you're looking to learn an instrument, write your own songs, and perform them. But for EDM-focused producers, it might not be the best fit. read more

I'm currently a student at mi and I find everything about this a school amazing the opportunities and the learning experience. To quote my professor Keith "Don't just look at this as just another music school look at it as your Career" if you don't do that then it won't be worth it for you you'll probably be stressed with the homework aspect but the homework aspect is the career aspect as well. So if you put one stars and all that and your complaint was about "money or you could learn the same stuff online or in books" than you really didn't want to go to mi because you were serious about music you went because of a Hobby that turned boring when you had to do the work. So to anyone that is thinking of joining MI if your serious or can get serious about your music and your career in the music industry than apply they will do what they can to help you but if your not even the least bit of serious than don't waste yours and the schools time,energy, money and resources. And pls pls don't waste the students time if your doing collabs with them as well. Great great program! I just completed the 2024 Summer Shot weeklong vocal performance program at Musician's Institute. I was amazed at how user friendly the program is and modern. We had access to state-of-the-art practice rooms, private vocal lessons, group classes in various genres, theory, songwriting, and live performance and studio recording with a band. The MI program teaches by practical application in terms easily understood in record time. Missing from university experience was the introduction to branding and marketing, all essential to a successful music career. MI even taught me how to take better pictures with my phone. I learned more in 1 week then I did from my 4-year university music degree. I am inspired to continue learning and using my voice with the tools learned at MI. I plan to return again and again for Summer Shot. The classes held students at various proficiency levels. I see you can clearly take away a fresh perspective each time going through the program. There is ample opportunity here for as much as you desire to apply yourself. If you want to excel in music, come to MI! read more

Do yourself a favor and save a ton of money by not attending. I attended back in 2008-2009 or so for their Music Business Program certificate. Teachers were very nice, but you could literally learn everything on your own by buying a few books off Amazon. I remember being placed in an internship, but it was the biggest waste of time. I took out $15k of student loans to attend and it was the dumbest thing I did. Thank goodness it's all paid off now. I have since attended community college, transferred to a prestigious 4 year university, and received a world class education. I completed the AA in Guitar Performance in 2024. I did everything on-line, and never had occasion to visit the school. Some classes were hybrid, meaning you were witnessing the class as if you were in the class with the on-campus students. If I were only rating the teachers in the guitar program, I would score it all 5 stars. Good things about the program include the credentials and skills of the teachers - many of them have considerable real world experience. The performance instructors usually have very good "ear" and are able to provide meaningful advice and instruction to help you improve. Most of them are genuinely interested in your progress, and pay enough attention to try to help you. There are a few negatives, though, that you should be aware of if you are contemplating these programs. 1. Interactions with many of the administrative employees can be very challenging. They are hard to reach, claim they do not receive your emails, and do not return phone calls in a timely manner. If you set up appointments (on-line) which you are required to do, some of the staff members are always late. Also, they will not review your record so they know anything about you when you do reach them - every interaction, even with the same advisor, is like starting over. It is one of the more significant frustrations in the program. It looks like they have considerable turnover, and limited training, perhaps, for administrative staff dealing with students. 2. They raise tuition prices frequently, so the estimates provided to you when you start the program are of no value. Each time they raise tuition and fees, they require you to execute another lengthy contract, to agree to the new fees, etc. You have not choice in the matter, other than to quit, I suppose. They never justify the increases, and on-line students are compelled to higher fees for services not provided to on-line students. 3. When I started the program, all teachers had "Open Counseling," which would be called "office hours" in other schools. By the time I finished, very few teachers had "OC" any more, making it very difficult to get questions or help. Some teachers (only some) would not respond to emails, neither, making it difficult to work through the program. Most, though, did fairly well with direct responses to questions. The curriculum is fairly relevant, and up to date. It was intense for me, although I had played semi-professionally for many years, I really had to work hard to keep up and make good grades. (I did make good grades - graduating Magna Cum Laude, but the work load to earn these grades was incredible. Some classes expect several hours a day of work, and the class load on the quarter system is very high. Obviously, if you are a better musician when you begin the program, you will have an easier time, but also, you may not really benefit from the program. 4. Like some on-line programs in other places, there is a tendency to force the student to complete "busy work," and much of that work is irrelevant to being successful with the material. They require discussion items and responses in almost all classes. I am not sure there is much value in these - I suppose they are intended to build a community among the students. Some students do not do them, and somehow still complete the classes. These are easy points to get, but not really very valuable in the real world. 5. Most of the teachers have mastered the technology needed to conduct online classes. Some, though, really struggle, and you wind up wasting a fair amount of precious class time with them trying to figure out how to use their systems and zoom, etc. Hybrid classes have a "helper" who is supposed to keep cameras on the relevant material and teacher demonstrations. Some of the helpers have no apparent training nor skill in their responsibilities, making them either useless, at best, or detrimental, at worst. read more

They are basically charging USC/NYU prices for a below standard education, if you can call it that. The courses are $614 a unit for classes that can easily be found at a community college. They tell you in advance that their classes don't transfer to most universities, but the worst part is that most of their courses don't even transfer within their own programs. Students have to sign a 30+ page contract acknowledging that they understand the low rate of jobs that are available in the industry, and the low rate of students who find jobs after leaving their programs, and then students are committed in the contract to an astronomical amount of tuition if they decide to withdraw, (they give you one week to withdraw without penalty) even though the first couple of weeks is a confusing mess. Save your money and look at the community colleges that offer programs like audio engineering, studio engineering and performance classes, and that has classes that all transfer to universities like the wonderful Cal States or UC's so that you're not throwing your money away. Realized that the college wasn't the right fit and that the courses like Photoshop - a required course for the program, and many of the other required classes- could be learned through a free online tutorial or at a community college without paying $614 a unit. They get you with all their sales pitches and bells and whistles of their Hollywood location and impressive studios, but in the end, it's a total rip off. Some of the local community colleges have impressive media/music/video programs. They really do a good job of selling their school but do not deliver on promises. It's unfortunate the school is pretty horrible. I paid off all of my student loans. And the last six years I've had horrible credit. I always thought it was because I never had a credit card. But it turns out it's because financial aid has claimed that I have not paid. They still won't return my calls after leaving numerous messages and it's impossible to get a hold of them. On top of that I have been called stupid by an instructors/ teachers (Francis Buckley) on Facebook for not believing in there leftist liberal views (very unprofessional). I went to the IA-program back in 2018. Paid top dollar for a 6 month program and honestly it was mostly just a learning experience, getter better independently. Most of the classes are OK, and some of the instructors are great, but they don't really want to be there and the administration doesn't care at all about you as a student, it's pretty much just a money grab. The number one con of this school is that it doesn't prepare you for a real job AT ALL. No leads, no connections, nothing. You have to make your own leads from the instructors (if they like you), who already don't want to be there in the first place. There's also a million different hidden fees everywhere, super annoying. You're better off doing it all yourself or applying elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and save that money. read more

I went here back in 2009, for the RIT program. I found the program to be very informative, the teachers knew what they were talking about...except for the class on how to be a good intern, that class was basicly 3 months of the teacher saying as an intern you and i quote " ..as an intern you are below pond scum...". I think that class was a waist of money all it said was, dont EVER touch an artist instrument, your opinion doesn't matter, if asked always comment on the way an EQ makes a snare or something sound good. The pro-tools instructors are VERY knowledgeable how ever there is one teacher with a thick Italian who is a little hard to understand at first. The facility's are nice, they have an SSL 9000, and a neve vx series as well as a smaller SSL for console theory 1. I dont have any horror stories about debt since I used the GI bill and it was free :D The class sizes are very small 12 students and the LABs are less the 5 students!! Way less the the LA Recoding school. Currently im interning for a very big name in hollywood where I am his personal audio engineer. Without the knowledge I gained from MI I would not be where I am today. I hope to someday teach Audio Engineering as a side gig. I did the Film program in 2009. I'm not working in production now but it did lead to another film related job after I completed the program. I don't know what's it like now but the school should emphasize more collaboration with others in different programs. You'll meet amazing people here if you're lucky. I have met some of my best friends here whom I still keep in touch with to this day. The tuition is on the pricey side and the level of instruction can vary sometimes depending on the teacher. But you really do get what you put in. If you go to this school you really need to be self-motivated and take advantage of all the resources they offer, whether it be the industry panels with guest speakers, auditions, meeting with teaching assistants, etc. read more

KEEP ALL RECEIPTS AND EMAILS from this school! My son went here two years ago as a teenager for the summer program and another workshop. Almost two years later, he gets an email that he owes them money. I called and they said I never paid even though payment was required before attending anything there. I was told the one workshop cost $997 and I had only paid $299 (a deposit). Good thing I had proof in an email that stated the workshop only cost $299 total. Almost two years later they were trying to collect a total of $997 from my son (not me) for a workshop that only cost $299. The workshops were great, too bad they try to scam you. I find it interesting that they didn't email me but emailed my son who is now above 18. He was a minor when he attended the workshops - they required his email as well as mine two years ago. I went for the vit program and it was a complete waste of time and money. I was probably one of the most advanced singers in the program (I even won one of the performance scholarships) and I was extremely disappointed with the skills I was hoping to learn. They will literally allow anyone in who wants to pay, even if you are tone deaf. Looking back I should've focused on songwriting and hiring a manager or publicist to direct me with career choices instead of wasting so much money on this program. I had to travel from the Torrance area everyday to North Hollywood and NEVER found parking even though I paid an additional $100 a month on a small parking lot absolve for students. I ended up parking wherever I could and got over 15 parking tickets as a result and of course had my car towed. The teaching they supply you with is so basic like the anatomy of vocals and shit that doesn't matter while performing songs that are so outdated for their performance credits. I would recommend you going to an accredited school that at least gives you a degree to fall back on (music industry is tough!) or if you still want to pursue music, use the money to hire people that strictly work for you and help you get somewhere in your career. All this school teaches you is how to put together a book of songs you can sing and tells you to print out sheet music in your key for other musicians and helps you lead the band. - all things you can learn from google or YouTube! Now I have the dept of education coming after me for this! However I do loans for a living so they picked on the wrong person ! I know all the laws and this school is committing FRAUD!!!! In just a few months in the Independent artist program, I've learned so much information to take my music career to the next level. In the independent artist program, you get unlimited 1 on 1 private sessions with top level professionals in the music industry. I'm a current student in the Vocal Program and could not be less challenged. The only thing that barely gets me thinking is the sight singing class and even at level 3 it's not that demanding. I was challenged more when I took some music classes at the local community college. The Head of Department is so focused on sequencing of classes and allows no flexibility for your work schedule, which is a major conflict considering how expensive the school is. The few good teachers that remain in the department are being pushed out by being offered fewer hours in hopes that they will quit because the students would be outraged if they were fired. Lots of politics in the Vocal Program and the students have to suffer because of it. I completed the Independent Artist program initially, however, and found this to be most useful and challenging course. Really teaches you to be your own team until you can afford one. Classes in Recording Technique, Logic Software, Songwriting, Entertainment Business and Entertainment Marketing as well as up to 3 sessions of studio time per week. This is the one stop shop programs. The Music Business Program is also very popular amongst the students. I have also heard little to no complaints from the other departments. My friends in the other programs seem to be quite challenged and happy with their curriculum. After this quarter, I will be transferring into another program at MI or perhaps a different school altogether. read more

The only reason I give this review two stars is because of the teachers. The administration obviously does not care for the students. I attended in '07 for guitar, and although I DID learn how to play guitar, the skills I received are far beyond sub par, not to mention I was told on several different occasions that the school is fully credited, but later learned that the pretty much any diploma you get from them is worth nothing to no one. I graduated with no idea how to live my life as a musician, and a handful of skills I could have gotten by purchasing a couple books online and saving tens of thousands of dollars. And again, because of the teachers and the friends in the faculty that I made I made the decision to go back for the recording program in early 2011. The experience was better because of the intimate class sizes and hands on approach that the program had. Unfortunately it was the administration again that caused me to hate the school more and more. It was only because of the second quarter internship program that I was able to find a studio that I knew of previously and work my way to becoming the 2nd engineer. Although this is mostly contract work, I am a lot happier being an engineer than I believe I ever could be with being a guitar player because of MI. Get rid of the current administration and find people who actually know what they're doing and care for the well being of potential, current and past student and maybe those who are actually really skilled at their instrument(s) won't graduate and end up BEING A BUS DRIVER! read more

The school is a money grab, but I'll try to be fair here. I went to the school in 2005 for the percussion performance program and left after 3 months. I eventually went on to working in music management and am still working as a manager today with a great company. Musicians Institute did not get me that job or opportunity. But let me lay out the pros and cons so you can decide whether this is right for you or not. PROS - Great facility w/ access to plenty of instruments, studios, and rooms to work. - A small # of the staff members are great TEACHERS (few have had the professional experience they advertise) - the connection to Barry Squire and the hiring hall (he really does staff a lot of musicians on major acts) CONS - it's not Berklee - Most of the teachers are burnouts - You'll be placed in classes with players of all different skill levels and probably learn very little as a result. - It gets very few students work post graduation - most of the students look and sound like the people who work at Guitar Center (I believe an omen of sorts) - tuition is high Here's my honest opinion. The school has a lot of resources if you are self motivated and simply looking for regular access to gear and studio space. Don't go here to try and start a band. If want you WANT, is to be a professional touring or session musician, don't do this. Take the money you would've spent on tuition, get a lock-out rehearsal room, a killer private teacher, find someone that knows Barry Squire to introduce you, and call anyone you know to start hanging around working musicians. That's your best shot. The action is outside the schools walls and they'll do little to get you there. read more

The Musicians Institute is an amazing institution! In my opinion the negative reviews are from performance students who expected to come to this school and become a gigantic rockstar. You get what you put into this school, the connection you can make because of the schools resources are phenomenal! The connections you can make with other students is mind blowing. FIRST QUARTER: I am currently attending the school for Audio Engineer with emphasis in Live Sound, I am a first quarter student on week seven. If I could change things about the program I would make the classes smaller, and I think the teachers are great, some better then others. The students are what make things difficult, the younger students like to try and control things and not let everybody get a shot at the mixer, you really have to put yourself in the front of the class room, don't expect the teacher to force you to learn, YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT INTO THIS SCHOOL. I enjoyed my time at MI, and also hated it. The administration is a joke- business majors running a music school is incredible.... They have no idea what the students really need, and continually raise tuition, and drop program benefits. They treat their instructors like dirt, and even harass them. I was directly mistreated by a high office member. I won't name names, but it cost me thousands of dollars and resulted in 2 weeks of missed classes that I had to pay for any way. The school just announced that they were becoming open to franchising. Well, not only did they disgrace the school by hiring some very inexperienced instructors and administrators, but now they're going to pop out little MI's all over the country like frickin' McDonalds. MI Certificate? Degree? Hahaha, might as well go to University of Phoenix online, because it's not going to be worth anything. The financial department is disorganized. The school's bank still owes me money for a mistake they made 2 years ago. Doesn't look like I'll be getting that $ any time soon. The teachers are great, but the vocal program is a joke, and such a waste of money. Bachelor program is such a rip off, they out you in the same classes as the certificate and AA students, and charge you 3 times for them. I am going to start my 5th quarter in the drums program and so far i am really loving it. I never thought i would like school/college. Teachers are very knowledgeable, although they don't all have the best teaching skills, and if you actually do what they tell you and put in the effort and hours they suggest, there is no way you 're not going to be amazing when you get out. My only complaint??!! Acceptance rates. They will accept anyone. And i am fine with that but just make sure you make the right adjustments in class. Like i said, i am going to start my 5th quarter, which means i am still in my 4th, and i have people in my class that should have never made it past the 1st or 2nd. I'm just about to start the 6th and final quarter of my AA in Drums. Will update this review when appropriate! -- This past year has been an amazing experience. It feels like I have grown so very much and gotten a lot out of attending MI. To put it this way; there's more things to get out of MI than there's time to do so. And it's all up to you what and how much you will get out of your time here. To go further into detail about some things; What do I mean by there being more things to get out of MI, and more opportunities than you have time for? - It's all about what you focus on and how you spend your time. If you practice _all day, all the time_ then that's what you'll get out of it in addition to classes. I've never had anything pushing me as hard to practice as this atmosphere, the people in MI and all the things you get to work on. -You have the opportunity to go to hours and hours of your teachers Open Counseling every week for whatever purpose; ask questions regarding classes; ask questions regarding drumming (specific things, exercises, gear, mentality, whatever!) or anything you'd want, business stuff or getting to know them. The topics are endless. -Dozens and dozens of LPWs to perform = learning songs, perform with different musicians, meet musicians, play with experienced teachers or sometimes even outside guest musicians. You can get SO much experience out of this. -Career Development and talk with people already in the industry on a weekly basis. You can get so much out of this, and so much help with whatever questions you have or whatever you're trying to do. -Networking, meeting tons of industry people and musicians. Start a ton of bands and rehearse every evening of the week. Put together projects. Get to know people with studio access to do record sessions.. -ANYTHING! The opportunities are basically endless. And that's what I mean, you can't do all of these things, 100% of them, as there's not enough time. sacrifices and planning. What do you want to get out of it? What do you need? What's your focus? It all comes back to one important realization that anyone should be aware of, but that's in the end really obvious so no one should be surprised.. It's all about _what you do, and how much you put into it_. You won't get much out of your time here and the money invested if you're not trying and if you don't do the things. Take advantage of the school and the opportunities! If you only attend your classes and practice an additional hour a day, sure you'll be a better musician when you get out. But are you getting your money's worth? No way. But if that's what you do; don't blame MI for not preparing you for 'the real world'! It's all on you, MI's there to be taken advantage of and for you to use. It's all on you, not the school. That's the most important thing about MI. The teachers have lots of experience, many better performers than teachers. Cons: -Depending on your schedule, you might miss a bunch of classes due to holidays that you're actually paying for = money lost, experience not gained. -Teachers prefer gigs over teaching = if a gig shows up, you'll probably get a substitute teacher = not the teacher you've chosen = not what you've paid for. Happens even for private lessons. -People pass classes too easily due to attendance being the biggest part of your grade. It's very unfortunate when classmates don't practice and slow down the whole class due to not coming prepared. -People come to MI on different skill levels and with different experiences. Almost anyone gets accepted. This creates huge skill gaps in classes. That being said.. attending MI has been the most exciting experience of my life so far, and has already helped me far more than I actually expected. You will have material to work with for Years and Years after you graduate. You will have so many friends. You will hopefully have an amazing memory to last a lifetime! My experience with Musicians Institute was pretty much the exact opposite of most reviews from students/alumni. I struggled heavily when it came to my studies, and found that most teachers and students wanted nothing to do with you if you weren't already at a certain level on your instrument. The people there really know how to make someone feel stupid when someone is trying to learn something new. I felt very discouraged being there, and found it to be a very cliquish and cold environment. Impossible to make friends or any type of connections. I'm currently stuck in non-music related day job and have struggled to get gigs from the lack of help or guidance I needed. It seems like administrators only want to hear positive stories about graduates who succeed after MI, and have no concern with those who are struggling. Forget about any type of career assistance or job placement; anyone who receives that is someone who can make the school look good and attract new students. read more

Why so many bad reviews? I completed the PIT program in 2006 when they switched from a certificate to an AA in percussion performance. The degree itself has not carried me very far, but the experiences I had have served me very well. You get what you put in. I spent full days learning from every person I came in contact with. Took some business courses, some vocal courses, and some recording courses, to include getting into as many studio and live playing sessions as possible. The faculty was always very helpful and knowledgeable. Because of my experiences and education from Musicians Institute, I am able to play anything and take the gig form any audition. Does it guarantee you a job? NO! Any school that offers placement like that usually requires some sort of special program enrollment that requires a payback program from the job as well. It is a roundabout way for companies and schools to do business. Musicians Institute s a niche institution for working musicians and business people. If you are looking to be a rockstar, or some magic pill, this is not the place. read more

Students come from all over the world to learn at an Institution that has a 100 percent acceptance rate. Everyone gets in because they only want your money and then when they get it, you are regulated to a less than professional management team who cares more about keeping their job than your education. Before you decide to go any music college, whatever Eastman, Berklee or HERE, you have to accept, admit and understand the fact that musicians (especially without a real education on specific instrument) typically are not INELASTIC DEMAND in today's world. And wherever you graduated from. I used to study in and graduated from a states university and private liberal art college that located around Chicago (BM composition degree). The chances of working as a professional composer or an editor at there are really just a few. So I moved to here and study the Audio Engineer program. Yes, there are places inside the industry that always are open such as engineer and manager. Therefore, like being said, the Audio Engineer program in Musicians Institute is the best option for those who want to get into the industry. In MI, recording studios, equipment, DAWs and plugins are the top of the world. Each one of their studios could worth a million. You can use them as free and serve your own projects. Plus not like some other schools, the "unique" acceptance rate allows everyone, especially those who only want to be an engineer, to quickly get experiences and potential clients, as well as the business program. Before you make your final decision whether or not to go here, please make sure you have acquired some sorts of diploma before - like a Bachelor Degree or Master Degree. Not only for an insurance - remember that the certificate program is only cherries decorating the top of a cake. It has to be combined with REAL Degrees in order to make it work. Do not anticipate that the 6 months training could let you win the competition with other guys who have years experiences, or EE degree from UCB, or BM degree from NYU. Oh, $$$. It cheaper then some stupid liberal arts colleges that are setting in the middle of nowhere and charge you 45,000 USD for two terms. And, don't forget the location. AWFUL!!! don't waste your money because that's all you're interested in! They accept everyone and no one who's there has talent. The staff sucks, students suck, and facility sucks. I'd miss class because they would call me into the office to make sure I was paying. The speakers didn't work, and the security guards don't do anything about it. How are they going to be a music school without working speakers? Also, there's absolutely no parking and I'd have to be stressed about tickets all day. I got so many tickets because I went to that school. If you drive, you're screwed. The curriculum sucked. No one understood it and the teachers wouldn't even follow it, they would make up their own lessons. read more
