It was love at first bite for me with musubi and onigiri, so when I saw a spot dedicated to this deliciousness you better believe I made a point to go there! I ran even faster when StaciLei, Yelp Hawaii's amazing Community Manager, told me it's a must and gave me her list of greatest hits and must not miss items as a guide! Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! They have a HUGE menu, and I went with spicy mentaiko and salmon, spicy mentaiko and ikura, ikura and salmon, and tuna mayo curry, all of which were great. I LOVE that they make these to order. You can see the line in the back hard at work, and they're very fast. You're sure to encounter a line when you arrive, but don't be scared, it moves quickly. Friend recommended this spot and I'm grateful she did. There were so many fresh and interesting musubis to choose from. I bought kimchi spam, eel spam, inari spam, and a furikake rice ball. Didn't really interact with staff as they didn't offer to help while I viewed the items and I selected my items fairly quickly. I found purchasing four musubis very affortable. Having that high rating with over 1500 reviews was certainly intriguing. We're lucky we stayed super close and bumped into this Musubi cafe. It's busy since relatively early in the day but ordering process was seamless and they got the order pretty quick. Your number would be called when everything's ready. This was honestly one of my favorite food spots I've tried in Waikiki so far. I got the miso salmon musubi, unagi, egg & spam musubi, and the spicy tuna -- every single one was super delicious. Especially the unagi one and spicy tuna one! The prices were really affordable, everything came out fast and service was great. I appreciated that there wasn't unnecessary onion or filler overpowering the flavors. Just really solid, fresh, flavorful food. They also have cute merch in the shop which made the place feel even more fun, OG and local. Mega recommend if you're in the Honolulu/Waikiki area. I'd especially recommend going around 4 PM -- perfect snack or early dinner moment. I came here again on my way to the airport to have a good hearty snack on the flight. I was already skeptical about Musubi before coming here because it seems to have a lot of rice and I am not a big fan of rice. I ordered their top 3 best selling ones and as I was imagine, it was a lot of rice. I ate their top top portion only and some rice. If you are Musubi fan, you might like it but not for me. First time in Oahu and had to try this! Seems like a classic staple. Looking at the menu first, I was surprised by how many different flavors there were! I was also surprised that they had actual onigiri too. I tried the spicy cod roe onigiri and the classic musubi. The spicy cod roe was pretty unique to try, although I wish it had more filling cause theres def a whole lot of rice. The classic musubi also just tasted like a regular musubi LOL I thought it was would be a leveled up musubi but it tasted like a good old fashion musubi you can make in the kitchen. Again, there's a whole lot of rice with it too haha. Partly because we always finish the musubis before we even get to take a photo of it. Good sign, right? Located on Kuhio on the first floor is a mom and pop looking kind of a store. They sell store merchandise of their prize spam musubis ranging from tote bags, shirts, magnets, etc. They have a menu with photos and prices of each item they sell which makes it helpful while trying to decide on which one to order (although it's tempting to order everything). We always order teriyaki spam, spam w/bacon and egg, and spam w/bacon, egg and avocado. Occasionally, we will order onigiris as well. You cannot go wrong with any of their musubis. It is such a tasty treat/meal while you're on the go. Perfect for the beach! Enjoy it while it's freshly made and the rice is perfectly warm or eat it on the go when you can. The curry bowl was simple but very good. Thick and rich, the curry matched well with the veggies and rice underneath. The bowl was more of a medium size,but it was filling. The tempura shrimp udon was also tasty. The dashi broth was definitely the highlight. Light and sweet, this broth was a perfect compliment to the crispy shrimp and noodles. The majority of items are made to order at this particular location, which means you have to wait for your order, but at least you know it's fresh! While the musubi was delicious, they literally just give you a ton of rice and very little protein. We tried the teriyaki spam, tuna mayo, salmon seaweed and salmon mayo. The spam pieces were super thin inside the teriyaki spam musubi, while there was literally only one dime-sized scoop of tuna or salmon in the others. We spent about $27 for 10 musubi, which is relatively affordable, but still probably not worth it given how much rice is in every bite. There's also limited seating inside and for some odd reason, there's some random drippage (not rain) in the air if you try to sit outside. As for the musubi itself, we tried a variety of options on the menu, but my personal favorite is the spam avocado egg. It has the perfect ratio of meat to rice and is very tasty. However, for simpler options like the teriyaki spam, I felt like there was too much rice since there is less meat. Nonetheless it was still pretty good - can't really go wrong with a musubi. I knew during my stay in Waikiki that I had to check out Musubi Cafe. This location is located right by the beach. Parking can be tough since there is limited street parking. But I got dropped off to pick up some goodies and picked up. I love that they had so many different versions of musubis, rice bowls, and rice balls. Even for just their spam musubis they had so many different options I was almost overwhelmed. I went with their original spam musubi and an avocado eel one. Both were really good just a little pricey compared to some places. I love the eel and avocado combination one and if you like eel then I highly recommend it. No indoor seating or outdoor seating, this place is strictly a grab-n-go shop. All of their musubi's are pictured on the wall and there's at least 40 different styles. It was a little overwhelming, but I went with a breakfast musubi with egg and bacon, an avocado musubi with spam, a classic musubi, and a double bacon wrapped musubi. This was literally rice and egg wrapped in two giant strips of bacon and no nori. These were all delicious, with the avocado and spam being my favorite, but nothing beats a classic musubi. I saved the other two for the next morning. Let tell ya, that bacon musubi taste just as good cold. The service here was fast, friendly, and helpful when it came to musubi questions. When I found out Musubi Cafe Iyasume was across the street from my hotel, I was so excited. On a walk back from the beach, I bought the salmon roe and the spam musubi. There were a couple of patrons placing their orders when I was there, no crazy lines though. I brought them back to my hotel and instantly noticed the excessive amount of rice on each of these. Maybe I've been spoiling myself making them with a 50:50 spam to rice ratio, but this was disappointing. The three came out to be about $12-15. Everything I tried was pretty good, not great. Was it convenient? Yes Was it relatively cheap? Yes Will it fill you up? Yes, on rice. I ended up tossing half the rice on each one to save room for poke. Is it worth standing in line for?
