An independently-run museum close to town centre.
I had the luck of joining a tour about to start. Don't do like me - phone ahead to arrange a tour!
The museum itself is small, but the collection of instruments is quite big. The enthusiasm of our guide was excellent, and you can really see the passion he has for these instruments (a passion necessary in order to build such a diverse private collection). I'm sure our guide could have gladly talked for many, many more hours if we had the time!
We were given a fascinating tour through time through various evolutions in musical instruments, - some ingenious, some beautiful, some ridiculous. (You also learn the difference between "guitar" and other classes of instruments, like "lute"). From the origins of a "guitar"-like instrument in northern Africa, you will be shown how the intricacy and complexity developed over millennia to improve the instrument, finally leading up to the 21st century rock-star sort of designs we think of today.
You don't need to be a music nerd to enjoy this tour. The stories are very interesting, and you get a chance to play some weird instruments. read more
