I love this gym! I'm a Canadian who vacations in Mexico quite often and Cancun is frequently my…read morestart point because of the unbeatable cheap flights. This time I decided to stay a couple of weeks in Cancun before heading out to other areas just to relax. I stayed at a nearby apartment hotel and needed somewhere where I can do swim lapses and workout. The hotel manager told me about this gym that was owned by Alex Rodriguez. I was only in the area for a week (another week at a hotel further away that had a gym) . The wonderful kind young woman at the reception ( I forgot her name, I got her to write it down but lost the paper.. she is THE BEST and NICEST SWEETEST PERSON who works there!!) served me and got me ready with a one week membership. She is the only one who spoke perfect and fluent english and from what I hear she wants to learn french too!!! I paid 900 pesos ( $65) for an unlimited membership including the use of the pool, hot tub, showers, towels, exercise machine, weights and exercise classes including aquafit, spining, Zumba. Incredible deal. Yes .. its pricey but most places I vacation at, do not allow one week memberships or daily visit fees. Energy gym does plus they also have daily visit fees of $300 pesos. The super nice front desk woman gave me a tour of the gym. Amazing. People there are also pretty serious about fitness. I feel bad to say that in the whole week that I was there I planned to use the facilities every day twice a day but only managed to go 5 out of 7 days once a day. I did an hour lapses at the pool . I wasn't perfect. The pool got really crowded at the times that I went and 2 people in a lane was really though as the lanes are very narrow and small. There are 4 lanes all together. The middles ones are for fast and medium swimmers while the side lanes are for slow and leisure swimmers. The pool water was slightly cooler which I did not like. Although there is a lifeguard on site, he is not always present and watching over the safety of swimmers. If you are swimming during an aquafit class, the music is so loud and unbearable, it makes the swimming not enjoyable. The changes room is big and spacious. Your access card is also the card that locks and unlocks you locker. Blow dryers are available and so is soap in the showers. Shower water is unfortunately not hot. It gets warm and then start getting less and less warm after 10 minutes. The sauna is AMAZING! It is amazingly relaxing. It is located in the woman's change room and right beside it is a steam room. I did not like the steam room too much as I found every time I went in there was a bad smell! I did not get to use the equipment this time but I really hope that next time I will! The gym has two flours filled with treadmills, elliptical, spinning bikes, free weights, even a stair climbing machine that I have never seen before. There is a coffee/juice bar right beside the reception, just like most modern gyms. There are many people during the day but since there are so many exercise machines, there is always space to workout. I found my gym in Cancun and I highly recommend it to anyone who are not only tourists staying in a hotel with no gym but locals who want to stay fit too! This is an awesome place.

A 4 because the young skinny guy manager is an amazing person and has can turn it into a 4 or 5…read morestar gym. Most staff are amazing especially the pretty women and hot guys. One lady (35-40s) , an older lady (40s) and an older man who runs the nutrition section which you have to do a bank transfer for a bottle of electrolytes and won't even make a smoothie after like 6pm, don't seem to care about people, or their job. The main young hot manager guy is epic. He is going places in life. As a former club manager, runway model for DNA, natural bodybuilding champion maker (Venice Beach's Muscle Mania) , and over-achiever (learning disabled diagnosed at 16 but got a 3.67GPA at NYU's prestigious DPD) So I know talent when I see it. I gave my new style training, nutrition and natty supps business plan to a buddy back in 2005, with the same loving, caring demeanor, friendly go above and beyond because you care attitude and he is now a millionaire in Scottsdale, AZ and even told my brother he owes me his life when he ran into him back at our hometown. That's just an example of how this one Manager can make that place POP and Make money hand over fist. 1. The nutrition section is a GOLD MINE. You cant have a guy who doesn't want to make protein smoothies there and only accepts bank transfers. It's a hassle and people especially serious bodybuilders, and professional Athletes do not have time for all that. It also shows gives the impression that this smoothie guy does not care about the customer. So I would rather spend money downstairs at the heath food store with the women there who care about me and smile and help me out than ruin my good mood I need for hardcore training talking to a guy being rude on purpose while I try my best to stay polite as long as I can. 2. Selling Top Tier Supplements up there will bring in at least 200k a year net. The Supplement Smoothie Section is a mess. I was trying to be nice to try and read the list of mushed up tiny hard to read lettering and help this old guy make some money but his attitude and set up was so bad it was a huge turn off. I bought an electrolyte bottle eventually which took me 15 mins because he intentionally kept trying to give me a hard time pointing to the wrong bottles on purpose. 3. The machines are awesome for a starter top tier in the making gym. - Next thing to do is add in some Artificial Grass (soccer or football style) with High Quality Sleds. - Some sports style training equipment like tied or weighted soccer balls, or ask gym goers what sport equipment they would want and you're golden. That stuff is also very inexpensive especially if you refurbish it yourself. You can make it look better than store bought with your own style. 4. The elevator is broken a lot, and there are no signs to tell you where to go. That is a huge way to lose customers especially when there is a club next door. 5. Locker rooms are awesome 6. No Professional looking personal trainers. 7. No personal training section for VIP members that bought training. 8. No certified nutritionist 9. TRX area is a mess. And no one is there cause no one knows how to use that stuff. You need a trainer there at all times. That is an invention from an ex-navy seals, you will get nothing out of it if there is no one there to teach you how to use the equipment. 10. Get some gigantic men and women trainers. Does not matter what certification they have, even the best certification is not that much better than the others. The ONLY certification that is worth its weight in GOLD is called the NSCA. NASM is garbage, I skimmed the book in a week and passed the test. It is a commercial gym money making certification agreement to make money off of naive unassuming new trainers. ACSM = garbage. It's for training maybe an 80 yr old. They are all garbage except the NSCA and a professional athlete you meet in the gym who directs you to the right training manuals and methods. For that you have to be lucky and have humility. 11. This gym has HUGE potential. Their skinny but enthusiastic manager is someone who given full responsibility could turn that gym into something special. 12. It doesn't help when there is no signage to tell you how to actually get to the gym when you are in the mall. 13. The young slim manager was the only reason I did not cancel and go to the nearby gym. Once that kid gets huge and knows equipment, invests in TVs, an actual money machine supplement juice bar (get some young fast customer service oriented kids, keep the old guy for back management to be respectful to his age and long service. And you will make hand over fist with the right fruits, proteins, creations, glutamines, aminos, vitamin drink shots, on the table ready to go and buy fast. on the fly. Card in, card out, shot of vitamin energy or protein mass concoction, get some pros to walk around. That place changes. Heck that mall changes. Pros in Mexico to come in once a month is worth the cost.

A quick email to Roberto (he responded promptly on a Sunday) and I was all set. Made the 10:00 am class on Monday. They have a mobility area upstairs, and a weightlifting area downstairs in addition to the main area. Roberto was running the class and explained the warm up, strength portion, and WOD in Spanish and English (for me). Three important things to note: 1. The equipment was all modern stuff - air assault bikes, concept 2 rowers, etc. things we generally see in the US. 2. They have AIR CONDITIONING! A big plus since it's humid and warm. 3. The coaching is solid. Roberto noticed a few of my bad tendencies right away. All in all, a great place to drop in for a WOD. Their drop-in price was $25/day or $35 including your choice of shirt. From my hotel (Westin Lagunamar) it took 2 bus rides ($0.60 USD ea.) and about 30 minutes travel time. You could also take the bus to Kilometro 0 then cab it. It was a nice little adventure w my girlfriend taking the busses. (One bus on the way back had a mariachi singer providing entertainment for tips!) Oh, they are also a Crossfit Affiliate (according to one of the trainers, they are one of 3 in Cancún). If I ever come back, I'll be sure to drop in again.
