In my limited experience with salons in Italy (I have been to three now) the process is not quite the same as what I have come to expect in the States. In this salon, my experience for a hair cut went like this: first I had a consultation with the stylist - nothing unusual there - we discussed what hair cut I wanted. Next I went to get my hair washed. I was surprised when a bottle of some liquid was run across my scalp and massaged in as if I were getting my roots colored. I asked 'what are you doing?' and an assistant (who was working with my friend at the next sink) explained I was getting my scalp sanitized. That's a new one for me. It was a mint mixture which made my scalp tingle and felt cold. This was rinsed out after 5 minutes, then shampoo was applied.
The hair washing was just lovely with a head massage that was very relaxing. I would have enjoyed sitting there for at least 30 minutes! But alas, the massage ended too soon. After the shampoo was washed out, something was sprayed on my head, massaged through and then rinsed out. A conditioner perhaps? Not sure, but a comb went through my hair easily afterward, so I can only guess that is the case.
Next I was put into a salon chair (not where I had my consultation) and my hair was combed out by an assistant. We had a friendly chat while this went on until the Stylist arrived for the cut. He made quick work of the cut (I wasn't looking for anything too complicated) and we spoke about his career, Italy and America, where we live and the like. It was all very friendly.
The assistant came back and moved me to another chair for the 'brushing', aka blow dry. She made sure she knew how I wanted my hair dried, grabbed a brush and carried on. She was quite thorough and took her time making sure the hair was smooth. She applied a paste before beginning which she assured me would make the style smooth. After she was done, the stylist returned and dry cut any straggler hairs and made sure the sides were even.
The cut was perhaps more than I had expected to pay, but the staff were wonderful and they did provide me with the service I had hoped to receive plus a lovely head massage. My friend who got a cut and color was charged a very fair fee for the services she received and was happy with the results. There was a discussion about the color being 'right' when it was wet and they offered to make a correction, but once dried, it turned out to be fine.
If it happens that I am in need of a cut, and my friend heads out this way again I would be happy to tag along. The service is good and the people friendly and skilled at their profession, making for an agreeable outing.
