Chemist Warehouse can be feel like IKEA or the supermarket. You enter into a trance, wander around…read moreand several minutes later you have bought 14 items you hadn't intended purchasing. I usually enter with a really arbitrary need like cotton buds but end up staring at the tooth whitening kits and glow in the dark lube for longer than appropriate. Murine eye drops are also frequently on the "personal products" shopping list. The Preston Chemist Warehouse has a free car park next door which is handy as well as their late opening hours. I think people are happy to browse and spend more than intended as its mentally filed under "physical improvement" whether its cosmetic or physical (vitamins) people can justify the expense. I am now justifying my justifying and feel a headache coming on, thank you cheap paracetamol courtesy of Chemist Warehouse.

So it's kind a renaissance-esque, all in one type business. Prices are all pretty average and there's a good selection of brands within each product area (except where only one brand corners the market anyway). Located right near the junction tram stop on High St, it a pretty convenient place to grab some stuff while you wait.

Normanby Pharmacy is one of those classic old-school style pharmacies where the friendly staff offer expert advice and actually take a genuine interest in your health and well being. Normanby is not one of those enormous chemist warehouse stores and nor would you want it to be. Its size is reflected in the prices, but for those who prefer to shop where their best interests are valued and where you'll be treated with kid gloves and with a smile and a chat, this is the place for you. They have a postal station attached, though it is obviously the less-preferred area for staff, so waits can be on the long side. In saying that, they do stock Met Cards (the rare Sunday savers are almost always in stock) and given their proximity to the tram (i.e. outside) and train ('round the corner), it's reason enough to shop there on its own.
Some combined services stores feel a bit more natural than others: newsagency and post office,…read morestationary and post office, food and liquor. Others are a tad more puzzling, such as the post office wing of Normanby Pharmacy. It's clearly the less emotionally rewarding arm of the business, with only one staff member working the counter even when there's a long line, so the wait can a little while. Yet the pharmacy aspect is always well serviced by attentive and friendly staff who have a great grasp of their products and a helpful attitude. That said, it's actually a pretty convenient combination of services. There's a lot more makeup and gift-y items in stock than you find at most independent pharmacies, but everything else is fairly typical in price and range. They also sell metcards, which is pretty handy given the tram stop out the front, bus line alongside it and the train station down the road.

There's even a doctor's service at the back if you need to see someone for a prescription. The ambience isn't that crash hot - think bright lights, generic music and loads of signage written on fluro paper that might quite possible send you in to a fit. But the range is huge and the prices are quite competitive and I I like that I can come here and buy all sorts of health and beauty items in one go. It's a win for me. Don't miss the superfoods and protein supplement aisle if you're in to making smoothies at home.

Additionally, it's located at a convenient and central location - Melbourne Central, which makes for needing to go to the chemist not a massive chore, but a day out instead. I spoke with a chemist regarding my issues and she was so helpful with recommending to me what I needed, especially since I was feeling pretty clueless. She explained to me the product and was happy to answer all of my questions. Not to mention Priceline's affordability, combined with the great staff makes for a great shopping experience! How nice it seems they are to their regular customers, although I'm not sure how the woman fared once alone and back on the street. The pharmacy itself feels slightly barren, with only a couple of lonely shelves in the middle of the store and most of the products lined up along the walls. It's got a smaller range of goods than most, but appears to cover all the basic pharmacy bases. It's also got that really generic and old looking office carpeting that makes everything feel a bit forgotten. Nonetheless, the place is clean. The prices are within the average, and the staff are friendly but follow you around the room with their eyes in a way that's slightly disconcerting. Nonetheless, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt due to their kind treatment of the other customer.
