I was only hesitant to try this place because of some of the previous mixed reviews around service. Nonetheless, the restaurant being both black-owned and veteran-owned made me take the risk. I placed an order online, and it was ready when I arrived, which was great. The owner cordially greeted me, and gave solid service with a friendly demeanor. As for the poor reviews regarding service, everyone can have a bad day. Now to the food: I ordered The Delta (two fried catfish fillets and two sides). I chose the lobster mac and the greens for sides and ordered an extra side of hushpuppies for good measure. This meal in particular would give me a good indication of the quality of food and cookery and determine if I would be a repeat customer. The fish: Was phenomenal. You can tell that southern cooking is in the owner's lineage because this kind of seasoning is passed down through families, not through culinary school. It was beautifully cooked and the fish was fresh, which is important to me. There's nothing worse than catfish that isn't fresh. The mac: Could use work. The issue here is simply technique. The noodles were overcooked (al dente, please), the cheese was too runny, and as some others have stated, the lobster DID taste like imitation. I think this could be turned around with a few simple adjustments. The greens: Were solid. A little peppery for my taste, but that's a subjective thing. They were seasoned well and not overcooked at all. It gave a nice, acidic balance to the heavier things in the meal. The hushpuppies: Were great! I expect this quality of hushpuppy from any and every soul food place, and these delivered. Again, the southern lineage becomes apparent here. OVERALL: I'd come back to this business for another meal. I don't think I'd order the mac (perhaps I'll try the yams next time). The service is good, and the food is as well. Holy shit... this place is fucking amazing. Today is my first time eating here, and let me tell you this is the best tasting fried food ever. Harris(the owner) greeted me with the biggest smile and immediately told me I'm gonna love this food. He was absolutely right. We got the lobster Mac and cheese, coleslaw, and deep fried cod fish. We tried the Mac and cheese straight away, creamy cheese, the pasta cooked perfectly, nice chunks of lobster very flavorful and nice spice kick to it. Then we tried the cod next. Cod was deep fried to a nice golden color, great batter flavor. Inside the cod was very juicy, fell apart, and was not dry at all. Delicious flavor from beginning to end. Next the slaw. Nicely diced, perfect amount of dressing(not mayo I think it's a horse radish type of dressing) it's creamy. Delicious and it's very tasty crunchy and fresh. You can tell everything is made fresh and caught fresh. I'm sorry, but you CANNOT get any better than this place in the valley. I'm glad I supported this place but I got a awful stomach ache and really bad heartburn after eating here. It was either the seafood was not of good quality or old/cheap oil is being used here or both. The catfish also had a very strong sulfur/metal taste to it as well. The lobster Mac and cheese portion was very small, like costco sample size small and it barely had cheese and lobster on it, which was confusing because it's supposed to be lobster and cheese lol and the side did not look like the photos. If you don't believe me, go to a fish market in the hood. If I came back here it would be for the hush puppies, and yams and I wouldn't get a meal, I would just buy the amount of fish I want to be fried. The fish is good but one little piece isn't going to cut it for me. I appreciate the do over but you have plenty of customers that are happy so don't worry about this one. I was so excited they opened a you buy, we near my residence. On my way home, I decided to call in an order for a catfish fillet and shrimp combo meal. When I placed the order, the cook told me only 4 shrimp come with the meal and he could add an side order for four but that's it. Being my first time. I agreed and asked him to add the order of hush puppies since you get a free side of them when you check in. He told me the order would be ready in 15 minutes and I was 10 minutes away. What he didn't tell me was that I also had a choice of two side orders which I selected the lobster mac and yams when I arrived. I waited an additional 20 minutes before my order was ready and when I was arrived there was some confusion because I wasn't told that I had a choice of two sides for the combo plate, I had to ask. My order came up to $27 and for this amount of money I expected to have a huge portion of fish and shrimp but that wasn't the case. When I opened the container, I had one skimpy fillet underneath 8 shrimp and four hush puppies with a small portion of "mashed" yams and lobster mac. The shrimp were salty and overcooked. The fish was good but again for $27 I should at least have two to three pieces of fish. The hush puppies were actually pretty good. I really didn't taste any lobster in the Mac and it was spicy. The yams were good but such a small portion and again they were mashed. So I think it's fair to give two stars, one for the taste of the fish, and one for the hush puppies. One mor disappoint, $7.99 for a small container or peach cobbler - no sir - that's not cool. Now I could see if it was a half a pan or something and the dough was undercooked. I had high hopes for this place, being so close to home - maybe I could stop driving to the hood for fried fish but sadly I'll have to continue my drive to Penguins Fish Market on Pico and Louisiana Fried Chicken in Carson for my fried shrimp. I just don't feel like I got my money's worth. $20 worth of catfish fillet at my spot would have been in a separate container all on its own and enough to share. Also, I didn't like that's it only one cook, yes he owns the place too but he needs some help - I don't want to sit inside a fish market waiting that long when I called in my order and they were lots of people waiting while the lady at the cashier stood there. The food is great hands down, I read some negative reviews on here on felt compelled to share my 2 cents. Harris the owner, May lack a smile or friendly disposition. But he makes it up by being a vet who served our nation. A man who will make it right on the spot if you are dissatisfied, he works with non profits and sincerely tries to give back to our community. He is partnered with organizations like the one I work for to give locals who are not as fortunate as the rest of us an opportunity. Stop by on thanksgiving, eat at no cost, donate if you like. This guy is just one of those people who should not have a business...at all! Horrible service...food in disgusting conditions...and I can't even tell you how unprofessional he is. But, fine, I wanted to support a local business. The food was straight TRASH! The catfish fillet order was of nuggets instead of fillets (despite the menu stating these are totally separate items). So, now, instead of tasty looking catfish, I have a container full of something resembling fish jerky and pork rinds. After ordering my side dishes I actually cancelled them after seeing him not use gloves yet use his corn meal covered hands to prep the containers. I was not interested in anything after this, but hey, I waited through all this so, whatever. Then there came a roach. Crawling on the counter. Right between he and I. The guy just swipes it onto the floor and comments that he needs to do a bit of cleaning. Seriously. Needless to say the food went to the garbage bin. There was no seasoning on the outside therefore it was not blackened. Blackened does not mean charred on a flat grill. It requires a skillet. Mac & cheese had squiggly little hard pieces of something that looked and tastes nothing like lobster. Did not taste cheesy. The greens taste like they were not prepared by anyone in our culture. 9/17/18 When you walk in, you are hit with an aroma of fried goodness. Everything is made fresh to order so expect a longer wait for your order - which I don't mind at all. There was a huge parking lot in the back, so plenty of space to park your car and enter in from the back. Food: I came in during lunch and ordered "Yummy Tummy" which was 1 filet and I chose fries as my side. The fries were lightly seasoned and was delicious. Now... the main entree, the FILET was everything how I wanted it to be! I placed an order via Postmates yesterday. As a first time customer, I was beyond disappointed as my food was inedible. To start, my order was missing an item - candied yams. There was no prior notification of the item not being available, so I assume they just missed adding it to the bag. No big deal, things happen. I proceeded to move on to the Greens and Lobster Mac n Chz. The greens tasted like they were only boiled in water and those whole yellow hot peppers that you get from "In N Out". My husband and I love supporting black owned businesses. When we walked up to the restaurant there was a live band playing which created a really nice atmosphere. I ordered catfish tacos and my husband got a shrimp and fish plate. Unfortunately I did not enjoy the meal, the fish tasted like it had zero seasoning and fries were very bland as well. I was very unimpressed. There was also no ice for the drinks so we had a warm fountain soda. The staff was nice and provided decent customer service, but overall I think we overpayed for our meal. Amazing fish in the heart of Van Nuys! I recently moved down the street and saw My Fish Stop on Burbank Blvd. I looked it up and the reviews were great. Seasonings were perfect, and a little hot sauce (included) and tartar sauce (included) let you tailor the flavor to your liking. Collard greens were tasty & helped me feel like I was eating healthy. Very reasonable prices for lunch specials ($13.99 for a piece of fish + 2 sides) given the quality. Lots of other options too. Only deducting 1 start for the ambience. Several TVs playing sports and a small covered patio on Burbank Blvd were nice. But the inside is small, cramped, and massive industrial fans blowing instead of air conditioning. So take it to go. It's packaged well enough in a segmented black carryout tray (see photo). Seriously, to the owners, it's the San Fernando Valley where summer temps are in the 100s, and you have cauldrons of bubbling oil inside. Invest in some air conditioning!
