Bristol Buddhist Centre is quite simply a haven for all your Buddhism needs. They specialise in…read moreBuddhist courses and retreats but also run meditation and yoga classes. Led by members of the Western Buddhist Order, the whole thing can sound a bit elite and scary. That's certainly how I felt the first time I turned up for one of the many drop-in classes, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The reception opens out onto a big comfortable training room. A beautiful Buddhist mural at one end, the whole room is warm and peaceful. The staff, always happy and friendly, run a variety of nights throughout the week from beginner classes through to the more experienced stuff. Children's classes, parent and child sessions, and a lot more than just yoga - this is a very relaxing stop.

I have only been to beginner classes but have now been on every day they run (all except Friday and Sunday) and the teachers all have a slightly different style. Because of that you need to try it a few times on different days I think, see what pace of class suits you. The building is tucked away off Gloucester Road and is basic to look at but has a lovely atmosphere. It's very peaceful and smells of scented oil. You take your shoes off at the door and there's 2 studios and 2 changing rooms. You pay £10 for a one hour 15 min class but you can buy sessions in bulk to make it cheaper. I bought 12 classes for £84 so that's a hefty saving and after testing the water a couple of times in single sessions I knew I'd want to go all the time. You get 3 months to use the 12 classes. They provide all the equipment for free and they make sure you're happy and comfortable. There's no pressure to tie yourself in knots from day one and no judging - a 60 yr old woman regularly kicks my a*s and I'm half her age! It's first come first served so try and get there five minutes early. I haven't been turned away yet but the size of the class is quite unpredictable. I already feel stronger and today I did restorative yoga for the first time and I loved it. It's taken until now but I'm really into it and I'm historically unfit and don't go to the gym or do any exercise. I'd really recommend this place and yoga in general, I feel healthier every time I go.

It's just off gloucester road on denmark street, right at the end of the little side road. Shoes come off at the door and it's bare foot/socks around the studio. The nicest man ever greets you at reception telling you info. Cost is £10 per class which is the higher end cost wise- totes worth it! The class was busy with about 15 people attending, anne marie was amazing taking into account peoples various balances, hips and strengths. Easy to follow moves with definate pushing to achieve but without injury! Calming 5 minutes at the end left us all feeling calm but revitalised. Def will be booking more sessions, really really enjoyable :)

The nearest one to me, aside from Stokes Croft ones, was Bristol Yoga Space. They were a tad difficult to find, as I was at the opposite side of the road, and there is no big sign telling you where it is, but once you cross the road, you will see a small sign on the pavement beckoning you to go downstairs for yoga. It simply is a studio space, with a little kitchen and bathroom, and decorated very peacefully. It was pure and simple yoga, just how I like it, with lots of emphasis to get the poses right, and I felt completely at ease with my teacher. I just came out of my first class here and feel really great - challenged but rejuvenated, and I would certainly recommend it whether you are a beginner or someone looking to continue your yoga practice. I will be going again next week, and most probably taking up regular classes here. It's really difficult to find a yoga class that really suits, and I'm very lucky to have found one on my first go.

My regular gym has these vibrating plates and I didn't realise I could do anything other than stand on them and squat until the vibrations start to hurt my teeth. There is however an art to getting a finely toned bod with minimum effort and these personal trainers defiantly will get you on your way. The service was great, but the studio is just a small unit in the middle of an industrial estate and I kind of wanted a bit more glamour while I try and get that celebrity look. Besides a trip down the docks is a bit of out my way. Still I figure I've learned how more about how to use them now, so I'll be vibrating alone down at my local gym.

The tennis staff are great, very helpful, great fun and during my many years as a member I was always made very welcome, the Racquet Manager in particular (DML) is a star. The club membership prices are a bit too high in my opinion; the café prices in particular are a bit expensive. That said there are some pleasant members at the club and once you get started with the tennis leagues you will always have good people to play with at all levels. Finally, it's only when you leave the club and go elsewhere that you realise the quality of the tennis courts at David Lloyd, Cardiff. There are 14 courts in all (7 indoor and 7 outdoors). Great for playing tennis all year round and I personally loved the indoor courts.

First of all we were taught how to walk alluringly across the floor! Easy eh? We stumbled ungraciously and self-consciously across the floor in our high heels! However by the end of the class we were all able to do a routine. Dita Von Teese isn't going to be hanging up her boa anytime soon but it was a fun activity which really bonded the hen group and taught us some saucy tricks to use at home! The workshop took place in the club part of Java on a lovely light up dancefloor which gave that additional glam factor! We borrowed feather boas but bring your own cardigan (buttons rather than velcro, this isn't The Full Monty) to help you practice your reveal! No nipple tassle twirling required, you can wear a little top under your cardi. I wore shorts, a top, cardigan and high heels. It may be gentle exercise but were definitely sweating our toxins out towards the end of the workshop.

Great burlesque and pole, along with amazing circus classes...my newfound workout passion. Also, the student showcases mean opportunities for as much or as little individual creative expression as you want. My self-confidence has soared, and I've transformed from "scared to wear a swimsuit" to feeling so sexy and super-strong these days. You get younger with every day not older surrounded by the occasional superhuman athlete to look up to not some anatomical failure. When I started, I was in regular pain and seeing myself in a pit of despair of losing my mobility due to back pain/fibromyalgia with a scoliosis about to set in. With a discounted membership for newbies, I went on a one year charge practising yoga nearly every day, sometimes twice a day, at their studio. For the most part, the effects were medical miracles, and though it took me many months to master some basic excercises, and some I am still only average at to say the least, the classes are powerful and stimulating and exhausting, and i have never found anything better. On the down side, i didn't lose any weight, and after you have been to that many classes of Bikram Yoga, even with the variety of friendly instructors, its difficult not to feel that the lack of variety to the program tends to take instructors and students into a realm of robotics, and its a shame that too few of the 'instructors' actually prove to us they can do the poses themselves on the day which is arguably immoral for a 'teacher'? Thankfully other classes are options, though too few of them make use of the heated room option. Whilst the statue of Indian Elephant-Head God Ganesh is cute, its not going to please all faiths. The changing rooms are often over-crowded especially in the most popular sessions. Special note must go to Vinyasa yoga teacher Jude Whitburn who is a breath of fresh air originality and surprise. Worth every penny, not cheap, but no complaints just suggestions.

It is the only intense exercise I have done where your body is buzzing with effort yet your parasympathetic system kicks in and you feel paradoxically relaxed. I have done various sports absolutely nothing compares to the sense of wellbeing at the end of a Bikram class. FACILITIES - I agree they could be a bit better; especially the showers. But overall there is a touch of care and gentleness - you find creams, deodorants, tampons in the bathroom for free. THE TEAM - I found the teachers wonderful: dedicated supportive and fun. There is a team feeling and sense of belonging. I have overshoot my 90days pass and all the unused entries were rescued added to my next subscription. I love this place!

I was really impressed, a nice big pool, with good changing facilities (clean showers!). After my swim I visited the gym which was just lovely, well lovely in a gym kind of way. It had plenty of cardio options and a real good selection of weight training options. The classes on offer there are fantastic, if you can't find something you like, or at least don't hate the thought of, I'd be really surprised. The other good thing about these council run gyms is that you become a member of all of them, so you can mix it up a little bit and go to other pools or centres to keep you from getting bored with exercising!

On the other hand, at least they're kept clean and they're quite spacious. I haven't tried any of the other leisure centre facilities myself, but the gym looks well-equipped with rows of new-looking cardio and weight machines, and there are several classes offering aerobics, yoga, spinning and other types of exercise. There are also squash courts and a big sports hall for team games such as 5-a-side.
