The layout for the 2nd tier room is small but perfectly functional for a single traveler or couple, and I loved the thoughtful touches like a small chair in the bathroom, umbrella in the room with a holder, and hooks on the wall near the closet. The (nonalcoholic) drink minibar is free to take from and refilled daily which is another plus! And they had small chocolates that were refilled daily as well. I didn't partake in any breakfast or other food, but it did look good when I passed by. The garden area outside is nice to relax or work in. The hotel itself is on a quieter street but near many different modes of public transit - tram, bus, subway. The front desk warned me about needing coins for the tram / bus and was happy to exchange some bills into coins for me every morning as well. Not many taxis passing by but the front desk will call one for you very quickly if you ask. There are also bikes and scooters you can borrow. Overall I had a great stay and would have loved to stay longer! I had to move to another hotel for work, but wish I could have stayed at the i31.

(Not wanting to share a bed, my sister and I upgraded from the Standard Room, which only had one double bed, to the Business Room which had two single beds, so we didn't even get the cheapest room available, despite being budget conscious.) I'm not sure what a typical hotel room costs in Berlin, but compared to Vancouver, it was a great price, especially for the class of hotel. (But then again, pretty much everything is more expensive in Vancouver.) The best part about the hotel was the breakfast buffet. OMG. The breakfast, at a reasonable €12 a person, was AMAZING, and it alone makes staying at Titanic Comfort Mitte worth it. There was pretty much every breakfast item one could want (except for bacon). There were delicious roasted potatoes and mushrooms; scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes; yogurt, fruit, and granola; fresh vegetables to make salads; breads and pastries; and cold cuts, sliced cheeses, thin slices of smoked salmon, and olives; as well as a selection of coffee, tea, and fruit juices. My only complaint is that there was too much delicious food so I could not sample everything. If I am ever in Berlin again, I would definitely stay at Titanic Comfort Mitte. One thing to note is that the entrance to the hotel is not very accessible--there is no ramp, only stairs leading to the front entrance. (I come from a city where everything must be accessible for wheelchairs and people with mobility issues, so this was a bit unusual to me.) While there was a strange little elevator type thing for people who cannot walk up stairs, it needed to be activated by hotel staff--guests could not activate it themselves. However, it was to the side of the hotel entrance, so front desk staff are not be able to see if there is a guest needing to use the elevator. My sister and I are able bodied and are able to walk up stairs, but we had very heavy suitcases, and after having to lug a 50lb suitcase down two flights of stairs and up one flight at Alexanderplatz Station (that's a story in itself), my back was hurting and I did not have enough strength to drag it up another flight of stairs. We tried to get the hotel staff's attention, but they either did not see us, or ignored us. So my sister went in, leaving me with the luggage, and asked them to activate the elevator for me. But the problem with having to go into the hotel to ask staff to activate the elevator is if all travellers in the group had mobility issues, or if you are a single traveller, you'd have to leave your luggage unattended on the street while you went into the hotel. (However, the morning we checked out, there was a bellhop who kindly carried our luggage down the stairs, which was greatly appreciated. We tried to tip him--we are from North America where you are shunned for not tipping minimum 15% for shitty service at restaurants--but apparently tipping is not necessary/expected.)

However, breakfast was not included and cost 12 Euros per morning. For the range of food available, I found this a little expensive; continental, cold meats, sliced tomatoes and the only warm food was scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes. The room was nicely decorated, quite small but LOTS of mirrors to reflect absolutely everything which made it seem bigger. The TV had a mountain of channels to choose from in lots of languages. A hairdryer was available in the bathroom and hangers for clothes in the open wall closet. Everything was space saving. The shower, however, was huge! No bath, but a great shower with a big shower head! Another thing to be wary of here is that the bathroom has glass frosted panelling between it and the bedroom, with sliding mirror doors to separate. You can hear everything the other person is doing unless the TV is on quite loud. Make sure to share this type of a room with someone you know very well ;) It was located very closely to Freidrichstrasse, Checkpoint Charlie and the main square. You can walk to the square in five minutes and buy tickets for a tour bus that will take you all around Berlin. Very worthwhile to see all the sights! I would only recommend this as a short stay hotel. We stayed for two nights and that was just enough. Everything was immaculately cleaned and very new!

We could hear people coming in and out of their rooms all night/morning long, doors slamming and street noise. Perhaps we were hearing the kitchen all morning too as there was constant sounds of dishes clinking as well as silverware. There was also weird gunk on the bathroom wall that was just gross! There's no AC so sleeping with the window open is a must but that means louder noises :( We could have easily stayed somewhere nicer/quieter/more comfortable and accommodating for the same price as this place is by no means cheap. The rooms were modern and updated. The breakfast was very good as well. What makes this hotel a steal is the location. Close to all the tourist destinations with the Stadtmitte Metro Station down the street, many bus stops in the proximity, and walking distance to many historical sites. Perfect for visiting the Gendarmenmarkt Christmas Market. Also perfect for bus tours as the pickup location is only four blocks away.
