Such a cool spot in Hamburg for some tasty craft beers. They have tons of seating - both indoors…read moreand outdoors, and it almost always fills up during their opening hours. I just wish they had longer opening hours and were also open on the weekend! Also, offering beers in larger quantities would be nice as well, instead of getting up and walking to the counter to order a new one frequently :) Hamburg (and Germany in general) needs more places like this for sure!

OK, it's settled. Next time I go out for a really satisfying beer in Hamburg, it's Circle 8…read more Why? Because the nascent craft brew scene in the Hansestadt suffers from two problems: 1) fear of alienating German lager drinkers by serving them up something too genuinely flavorful; and, 2) creating weak, flawed, amateurish versions of pale ales, IPAs, et cetera because they just aren't very good at it. Circle 8 does NOT suffer from these failings. The black IPA I had there, was probably the best I've ever had. It was lush, lively, complex, rich, balanced, and at the same time wonderfully unique. Hands down, a winner. The Citra Blonde had lovely citra character, and some real assertiveness too - - also lush and rich - - this is REAL brewing - - real hand-crafted care - - and the beers go the distance. The 5-grain I had was a bit jarring at first, because it is is also a no-compromise flavor conveyor, but I came to appreciate it over the course of the glass. The owners are delightful; they have a dedicated local following (which they fully deserve); the hours are limited (4p-8p Mon-Friday) so you have to time your visit, but it is totally worth the while. A lushness, richness, flavor oasis in what is otherwise a tepid sea of craft beer mediocrity in Hamburg. You could call it a "geheimtipp" (secret recomendation) but I hope it doesn't stay that way for long. It's a two block walk from U-bahn Alsterdorf, and a pretty little bahn trip up through Eppendorf, and a joyous little stroll, it totally is.

If you're looking for the standard "German" place to eat while visiting Hamburg, this place is it…read more It's seated right along the Elbe River, with three floors worth of seating. The bottom two floors are full service dining, while the terrace is more relaxed with servers that mill about. All have great views of the river, and for my visit I enjoyed the sun up on the terrace. I arrived around 3pm on a Sunday, looking for a late lunch after walking and sightseeing all morning. A polite man pointed me upstairs when I said I wanted to sit outside, and found that you seat yourself up there when I arrived. They have English versions of the menu available with a QR code, and free wifi so no worries about roaming data when trying to decide what you want to eat. Also, plenty of the staff speak English, so for tourist that might ease your worries. I had their seasonal beer, which was a light wheat for the summer. It was the small size, and plenty for me as beer isn't always my go-to drink. My meal consisted of the fried fish (local white fish) with cucumber potato salad. Everything was fresh, tasty, and my favorite part was that salad. It was so different than my normal "American" potato salad and I loved it. My only complaint would be that their prices are on the high side. There's plenty of other places with cheaper options and probably larger plates. But for the atmosphere, I'd say it was worth it. It's a great establishment, with great homemade beer (their vats are right in the dining room), and very close to many tourist areas. I highly recommend a visit!

The entrance is through the courtyard directly into the bar area. The woodwork and craftsmanship were simply gorgeous. Our host led us to the restaurant side as we were there for dinner. My husband got the beef tips and gravy over noodles with a beet salad. The beef was so rich, flavorful, and tender with the gravy perfectly complimenting the flavor of the beef. Not a fan of beets by any measure, he absolutely loved the beet salad which was sweet and served cold. My daughter and I got the schnitzel and it was absolute perfection. We finished the meal with creme brûlée which was topped with rasberry sorbet, fresh fruit, and spun sugar. Creme brûlée is by far my favorite dessert and, in my 50+ years, this was the best by far! The restaurant is not huge. However, the wait staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The dinning area is simple yet elegant without feeling like you need to be dressed up. I definitely would recommend this place...even if you don't like beer. It is the oldest brewery in Lüneberg.

Reasonable prices. So if you plan a visit to Lunenberg, make sure to call and make a reservation. You won't regret it!
