We had the 2 bedroom called Sahkulu!place II, which was on the 1st floor, so our entry was just one floor up from the street which worked for us as my husband had knee replacement surgery last year. The restaurants in the neighborhood were fantastic and we could feel the soul of the city--unlike had we stayed at the Ritz or Four Seasons or one of the big American chain hotels we considered. We especially loved eating just around the corner at a place called "Privato"--very typical Turkish cuisine and the "Village Breakfast" was amazing. Lunch was great to; OK and dinner. We ate there often! The owners were really lovely and very responsive. The apartment was clean and well maintained and the bathroom was large for a 2-bedroom apartment. It is just around the corner from the Galata Tower and a great street called Istiklal--if I got that right--with wonderful atmosphere and pretty good food and lots of music at night. The shopping in the area was really nice too. It was close to everything we wanted to see, i.e. the Blue mosque, Hagia Sophia, some smaller more intimate mosques, the Grand Bazaar and the Spice market. Bottom-line--we loved it, got much more than we paid for--and would come back or recommend it to friends and family in a heart beat.

We wanted to…read moreexperience the local culture yet be close enough to the countless touristy attractions that Istanbull had to offer. Jackpot! By the 3rd day of our 7 day vacation, we were firmiliar and friendly with all the local restaurant owners and shop operators. Deniz is the manager at Sultanahmet and he provided great suggestions from places to eat, shops and sights to see and even gave us an insight on traditional customs. He even took time to escort us to a great rug shop by the Bazaar and I found some great pieces to bring back home. The room we stayed in was a 1 bedroom w a small living room and built in kitchen. Just the perfect amount of space since our agenda was to be out and about-rarely sitting in. We didn't plan to travel to sit inside an apartment! Our place was accross a small park and school-which at times when kids are out-got a little noisy. But this was very temporary. Maide service came daily to takeout the garbage and also change the linens. They were very respectful with our privacy and always came late mornings when they knew we were already out. We had an amazing experience in Istanbul. Certainly one of our most memorable vacation as a family. Lots of credit to Sultanahmet Suites, Deniz and the high level of hospitality his team provided. Cons: Solo female travelers BEWARE of the manager Deniz. The first night, i called to tell him the TV and Ac was not working. He said he will come over with the remote which he kept in his office, Why? He came over and was complimenting me about how good I look, and then leaned in for a "Friendly" hug. He threw me on the bed, raised my shirt and started to grope my chest, I jumped up, kicking him off and said I was going to the police, that in America, he would go to jail. He said the police wouldn't believe me and he would tell them, I touch his penis.. Since I'd already paid in full and on a budget, I has no choice. 2 days later I met another American lady at Bram hotel cafe next door. (I told the managers at Bram cafe). She had a similar story, He did the same to her and told her the same thing. She had a friend coming to stayed with her. I when to the police after I checked out and they were useless, saying there was nothing they could do, they didn't even take a report. He sexually molested me and then played it off like a joke. I'm still pursuing it until justice is served.
