I can't believe no one in Yelp-land has reviewed this yet!!!…read more OK, maybe that's because their transmitter is still only 50,000 watts and doesn't reach OTP, or maybe it's because of all the competition at the cool end of the dial, but this station warrants a listen. This is true community radio... commercial-free, sometimes format free. Often, it sounds like the DJs are people enticed off the street with free beer, but that's what makes it so fun. Since the station is in L5P, I guess that's the community they serve, meaning you get things like the "Lambda Hour" and "Black Revolution Perspectives", and at lunch "Hard Knock Radio" a hip/hop/politics show straight outta Compton. Admittedly those things are not my bag, but there are some interesting ideas put forth, and a wise man gets his information from multiple sources. In the morning, there's a blues show, and in the evening, a bluegrass show hosted by a super nice guy who sounds like Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - you can't get that on Sirius. Later in the evening is the jazz show, heavily laced with spoken word. Like most public radio, the variety is best enjoyed if you have a schedule of the shows - this is available on www.wrfg.org (when the site is up...). The station turns 35 this month, and they usually have a blues BBQ around Labor Day. If you're intown of Lilburn and Mableton, I encourage you to tune into this Atlanta institution at 89.3 on your FM dial, and listen to the finest radio money can't buy. As a kid my parents had this thing about only listening and watching…read moreeducational stuff...they thought it would help to keep me off of the streets, drugs and tattoos...see what happens mom when you make a kid listen to too much Bach and Garrison Keillor? We throw it back in your faces by becoming....wait for it...an artist! WABE was known classical music and NPR. I'm also a fan of Terry Gross's Fresh Air. I can't tell you how many times I've been late to an appointment because I stayed in the car listening to some interview that Terry Gross was giving or listening one of NPR Marketplace's segments. However, in that rare instance when I do "tune-in" I'll stop by 90.1 FM ten times out of ten. Sure, I've heard some repeated classical music tracks, but I do enjoy the interviews of fascinating personalities and news coverage on our nation's politics, economy, and culture. My only gripe? WABE could create and market more locally-focused content. I've also experienced WABE in a unique way. The Minnesota affiliate (MPR aka Minnesota Public Radio) wanted to interview me, so in order to conduct the interview I had to use one of WABE's sound booths. I had a pleasant experience working with the audio engineer, and I'll never forget the experience. Also, I also admired the padding in the room since it looked like something out of Space Odyssey. Did I have inklings to throw myself against the walls like a madman in straightjacket? Yes. I love WABE. Now, where can I buy a t-shirt?
