Ask the Community - Na Martial Arts

What is a good age for a child to begin in classes? I have a four year old daughter who shows interest in martial arts.

My girls started at age 4.

My son completed his second-degree black belt at this center a few years ago, and at that time we…read morehad an excellent experience under Ms. Bowman, the original owner, co-founder, and lead instructor. However, since the new owner, Ms. Gomez took over, we have seen a significant decline in the quality of teaching, a persistent lack of individualized attention, and a significant increase in class sizes that compromised the learning environment of the students. The situation deteriorated to the point that two weeks ago we decided to withdraw our 9-year-old daughter from the program and enroll her in another, far better Taekwondo center in Folsom. The current ownership appears to prioritize increasing student volume over providing individualized attention. Students of different belt levels are frequently combined into the same classes, creating confusion for both students and parents. Additionally, the progression through belts and training milestones seems unnecessarily prolonged. They blame it to supposed deficiencies in students' "readiness" for belt testing, rather than acknowledging the impact of inconsistent teaching or insufficient oversight of their less experienced junior instructors. When we raised valid concerns about our daughter's lack of advancement and the quality of instruction she was receiving, the response from staff was dismissive and placed responsibility solely on the students and parents (e.g. suggesting that students were not practicing enough at home or that parents were not teaching them proper forms), rather than addressing the issues brought to their attention. Their current practice raises serious concerns about a potential conflict of interest, as unnecessary prolonged training directly increases the duration of monthly fees they collect from the students. When we questioned these delays and asked for clarification, they responded defensively and repeatedly, suggested enrolling in additional significantly more expensive private lessons. This clearly gave us the impression that the recommended solutions were financially motivated rather than acknowledging their teaching quality.

We really took our time looking for a good karate/tae Kwan do place for our son. The main…read moreinstructors are a married couple that are very nice and do a great job. This review is a long time coming. Two of my children attend the studio and both are on the cusp…read moreof earning their Black Belt. I mean it when I say "earn". They don't just promote everyone automatically like some places do. My son is mildly autistic and this is the sport that he thrived at because of the structure and orderliness of it. The teachers are both patient and work with my kids while still firmly insisting on execution and respect. They understand that kids have different learning styles and different levels of motivation and are able to make it work for everyone. The kids really enjoy all the instructors and respond well to instruction and even discipline when it is warranted. I can't speak to cost / value because I have nothing to compare it against but for us it is affordable and all the costs related to uniform, tournaments, and belt ceremonies have good value. I would recommend this place to any child or adult looking to enter the world of martial arts.

The staff is patient and teaches students not only martial arts but a foundation of morals with the Tenants of Taekwondo. This environment has been so positive for my son; it is literally like a big family, everyone supporting each other; cheering for each other, encouraging each other. My son has an amazing deal of confidence and isn't afraid to speak publically, or perform on stage; he is also extremely respectful and polite; attributes I give to the teachings of this studio.
