The nation's pawnshop is housed in a four-story building on the northwest section of the Zócalo and it dates from the mid-1700s. It sits on land that was once owned by Hernán Cortés. Jewelry dominates the items on display. You probably won't find a Rolex here but there always seem to be enough bracelets and rings to attire residents of a small city. In all the years that I have walked through the building, I've still haven't found an item that begged me to take it home. It doesn't mean I won't keep looking, though. read more

Do not buy anything at this location in your next trip to Mexico City. Buyer be aware. Sad that a non-for profit organization tricks customers with fake items and prices. During the "Buen-Fin" (Black Friday in Mexico) they marked up all the prices and offered fake discounts. Sad for a non-for-profit institution. read more
