Everything about this place is a 10/10. I have had my birthday party here every year since I was a kid, most recently my 24th. The food is some of the best I have ever had. I love this place! I have been going there since the 80's, it is definitely a local classic. Every time I make it back to town, Nagasaki is always on my list of places to eat. You can't discuss Nagasaki without mentioning Harold(who is a chef and co-owner) who is always entertaining and engaging. Nagasaki is a staple for my family on birthdays. You should prepare yourself: this restaurant is dated. This is not Benihhana's. This is not a chain. This is a long standing neighborhood hibachi and the locals are very protective of it. You'll need reservations and still may have a small wait--well worth it for the food. Pro-Tips: As others said, there is a 2 for 1 coupon in the paper. Even without it, meals run $15-$20 and are very filling. Always order the fried rice. Be prepared for the chef's tricks. I have been going to the restaurant for over 40 years! It never changes!!! Me and my family love it. Harold and Egg Roll are the best! My son lost his wallet there last week. A high end wallet with two hundred plus dollars in it and 2 gift cards from Christmas. Called the restaurant the next day to find they had found his wallet and put it up for us. Of course nothing had been touched in the wallet. We tried to give Egg Roll a little cash for returning the wallet. He would not accept it. I've always loved dining at Restaurants that offer Hibachi Grill whether it would be Stix Beni hana or Shogun but they are quite on the expensive side. Nagasaki Inn likes to keep their prices moderate while maintaining top quality and family feel you won't get at any of their competitors. When I came here on a Friday night to celebrate a special occasion with my friend Tricia Ladner. We were greeted by the Hostess and friendly Staff (they've known her for years) as soon as we walked through the door. I was also happy to notice the cleanliness of the dining area and path way that led to the hostess podium. I was also impressed with the fact that the Hibachi side seating was already clean & ready for us to enjoy our dining experience. I start to look over their menu & take notice that they offer a wonderful variety of main courses and appetizers. Everything looked so great that it was hard to decide I was having a hard time determining weather I wanted the shrimp or steak so I just settled on steak and Tricia got her usual. Lo and behold we end up with Magic Mike (aka Harold) as our chef entertaining us for the evening with his magical skill on the grill. He was also comedic too handing out his glass Coke bottle filled with soy sauce asking if I wanted any Coke plus other various humorous jokes & jestures. While Magic Mike is woking his magic our server starts us off with a wonderful salad soaked in the most amazing ginger dressing you could ever have. Their Hibachi soup was really enjoyable not too salty served at the perfect temperatureand but I did feel it could have used more scallions and mushrooms. After Magic Mike's excellent performance we were served to some of the best japanese food that puts Shogun to shame. I thoroughly enjoyed my steak as it was juicy moderately tender & perfectly seasoned along with my rice that was moist and seasoned to perfection also. We got a good deal on our meal as we like many other regulars used the coupon from Friday's edition of Commercial Appeal which is found in the Memphis flyer. I would love to thank Magic Mike Tricia Ladner & the staff at Nagasaki Inn for this wonderful dining experience. I will be back for years to come & enjoy any other menu items along with great memories. It used to be a thing to have the chef cook your food and present to the table. Now, I'd rather they just bring it out of the kitchen. The cook had no skills whatsoever other than just cooking the food. He didn't seem capable of handling too much food at once, so he would only cook one or two things at a time. There was no show. No personality. He seemed to treat it like he was working at Waffle House. We were left completely without service during the time he was cooking. My beer was empty. My sushi was long forgotten 30 minutes ago. We mentioned it to the cook, but he made no effort to raise attention to our cause. We had to go search the restaurant to find help on our own. When the sushi came, most of our cooked food was already on our plate. Towards the end of our meal, I asked for a Philly Roll. My request was denied. He said it would take them too long to make it and that they would need our table. I have never in my life been rejected the right to order a sushi roll. Also, these guys do not have the capability to take an order without your looking up the number associated with its name. Try it. Order a Philly Roll or whatever and they will make you look it up in the menu and give them the number. It's like they don't know their own food. The shrimp were disappointing. I would have liked some scallops, but there are none. The steak was good. The fried rice sucks. I've had better from the freezer at Walmart. read more

I went few times I was going once a week then I had problems with another customer saying things about me , I asked someone whom I thought was the manager to speak with them, he said it wasn't his problem I should handle it myself, I told my waitress she said that when people say things about you and they do not know you it is okay. I called the same individual and tried to explain that this comment made me feel very uncomfortable. He called me crazy numerous times, he said that I was sick in the head and he said that I was not being harassed. I asked for the managers number, I asked for the owners number, I asked for his name. This individual would not give me any information but that the owner would be there tonight. I do not think that I need to spend my at place like this.Oh he told me that I was the problem I did ask him if he knew the Japanese words for peace harmony, love, which seemed to enrage him. Nagasaki Inn is sort of like the Pete & Sam's of Japanese food. Time inside the restaurant seems to have stopped somewhere around 1965, and the space is laden with the nostalgia of past birthday dinners and special occasions. While Nagasaki Inn has a full menu and plenty of sushi options, I went for the hibachi lobster dinner. My dinner buddy and I were seated at a large communal table with another couple and a lone woman who seemed to be one a dinner date with her bluetooth. The center of the table was a large cooking surface. A chef came to the table and prepared the food in front of us with a sizeable ammount of fanfare. Vegetables were enthusiastically chopped, bowls of rice were flipped expertly behind the chef's back and shrimp were flung into the air with gusto. The meal arrived on my plate in pieces - first, there was a pile of sauteed vegetables seasoned with soy sauce and sesame seeds. Then came a big bowl of fried rice. My meat came out last, huge chunks of lobster with soy sauce and spicy mustard for dipping. All of the dinners come with clear soup, salad and fried rice. The soup is fairly standard (but tasty) and the rice is prepared on the hibachi grill. While the salad's peanut dressing was good, I wish it had been on top of something more than just chopped iceberg lettuce. Because the hibachi dinners at Nagasaki are sort of like a show, it's a pretty kid-friendly place (read: they'll be plenty entertained). Nagasaki Inn has been around forever and it's one of my routine places to go for Japanese. The atmosphere is nothing to brag about, but somehow it just seems like part of the experience. There are several large Hibachi grill tables that each seat about 8 people, so if you have a small group, be prepared to share a table with other diners. And you'll have to wait a little while if you don't have a reservation, especially on busy weekend nights. But I've never had to wait more than half an hour. I love the chefs at Nagasaki. They are all very experienced and really funny with their presentations. The last time I went with my friend Heather, she and I laughed most constantly at the silly jokes our chef made as he expertly grilled our shrimp, steak and veggies. Eh... there were positive things like that our waiter was really entertaining and funny and that the price for our food was cheaper than other sushi/hibachi places but overall the food was just meh. I had the hibachi shrimp/chicken with the mushroom broth soup-name? and salad and there was just something missing when I compare to Osaka or Benihana that just made it not as good. The salad dressing is not as good as the typical ginger dressing at other hibachis. They need to update the décor too, it does not look like they have changed much from the 1970's when they opened. Fantastic Japanese restaurant. I feel as I should really stress that point since I'm not a huge fan of Japanese food to begin with. I went with a part of 6 for a friend's birthday and the entire experience was enjoyable. The Chef (we had Chef Mike) was a very good chef and the food he cooked as well as the show he provided were both very good. None of my friends had a complaint with the food and they all said it was very good. I ordered the Hibachi Chicken & Steak (Medium Rare) and that was some of the best steak and chicken I've ever had. the salad and rice that also came with it were pretty good as well (I was also given soup but I do not like soup at all). The only thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star review is the building (very old, I've heard this is one of the oldest Japanese places in Memphis) and the fact that my friends ordered a few menu items that there were never provided, but they were never charged for it so it wasn't that big of an issue. Overall, I'd give this place a 4.5/5. Definitely somewhere I'd suggest for any lover of Japanese food and I will definitely come back myself. read more

The food is decent enough our chef on this visit must have been new and clearly didn't get much training so there wasn't much of a show and what he did try was a bit painful to watch. The place is really run down and is serious need of a makeover, even the grill we were seated at had a big crack down the middle. The food all looked fresh, the advantage of things being cooked in front of you is seeing it before it hits the grill, I am not sure I would trust the place given the overall condition of things had I not been able too. read more

You have got to be kidding me about this place..... First of all, the decor is absolutely redonkulous! We looked at the health score-95. I have no idea how they scored that high. Here are the cons of this experience (basically everything): The waiter wouldn't allow my husband to substitute rice for vegetables. So basically they gave him a mound of bean sprouts (weird), and other misc. vegetables that he wouldn't touch. WHY WOULDN'T YOU ALLOW A SUBSTITUTION?? Then our waiter asked if we wanted fried rice. I asked what my other option was and he said, "nothing." When we received our check we had a $3 charge for rice. I asked a waitress why we were charged for rice and she said steamed rice is the option that came with the entree??? The other guy literally told me all we could get was fried rice. Coke refills cost .46?! Okay?? Possible bullet hole in the wall... I can't even describe the taste of the salad dressing...maybe smoked sesame mayonnaise honey mustard poop. The shrimp tasted old. Over priced for this random assortment of oddness. Yelpers, I am never this critical but y'all don't understand the awfulness we just experienced.
