Definitely in my top 5 restaurant experiences! So simple but so perfect in every way. We were out walking for our last day visiting Germany and got hungry, so just stumbled into the random place on a side street. They were booked with reservations for the evening, but fit us in since it was early. Super tiny and black painted walls, but flowers and candles on every table. Great playlist going as well. My gin and tonic was perfectly strong, and the servers were friendly and personable. They only had a German menu with 8 food options, so we used my downloaded German google translate as best we could but had no clue if it would be pasta, salads, or a plated meal. Everything turned out to be loaded salads and it was literally the best food I've had in a long time. I got the duck. Go here! read more

Still one of my favorite bars in Munich. I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my fond memories, but it is still as quirky and wonderful as I remembered. For some reason, I thought it was very difficult to find, but it was so easy to take the 19 tram through the heart of town to Maxmonument. Then it is just a couple blocks down Thierschstrasse and right on Mariannenstrasse. Look for the blue sign. No reservations. Cash only. Communal seating. Expect to share a table. It is a funky place primarily filled with 20 and 30-somethings crowded around the bar and small tables. Many are pushed together for larger groups, having lively conversations in the dark space lit by white candles. I think the room is painted gold, but it is hard to tell. The artwork painted on the walls throughout the space is... interesting. A severed finger writing "help" and an ear that is a mouth. It could keep you scratching your head for days. They don't have an English menu, although in another funny twist, many food and beverage items have English names and German descriptions. My remedial German was aided by the waitress, who was the best I've had in Munich this trip. My "Inferno" salad (grilled turkey, roasted potatoes, zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, peanuts and olives) was excellen,t and despite the name, only mild + on my personal spice scale. I also enjoyed a non-traditional "Old Fashioned." For visitors looking for an alternative to the hundreds of sausage and beer focused restaurants in town, this is a great place to try. For me, it is all about the salads and cocktails here. Do yourself a favor and skip the tram on your way back to town. Stroll along Maximillianstrasse (Munich's version of Rodeo Drive) and be blown away by the oppulence and extravagance of the retail elite. Even the streetlights are dripping in crystals. read more

This is as good as it gets, at least for me. This is one of the few maybe the only place where everything aligns- the atmosphere, the vibe, the people, the service, the music, and last but not least, the food. I came here back in 2009 with some friends and so far nothing's changed. It's still quite a gem all-year round so it's busy all year around come snow, rain or sun when they dine al fresco. This place gets packed toward dinnertime as the week points to the weekend. Take your time, enjoy your food and the people watching. The service is pretty casual and they'll never rush you to get out. They have a full bar featuring a standard brew or a fancy cocktail like caipirinha, munich mule or a bloody mary. Portions are big so come come hungry. They offer 10 selections of their signature styles plate all about €10 with piled-high greens, savory vegetables (roasted potatoes, zucchini, mushrooms, grilled onions) with your choice of protein and a side of focaccia bread all on one plate! The plate looks dauntingly big but you'll get through it. There's salad under there somewhere. My favorites include: _the rosmarino: rosemary turkey with sauteéd zucchini, grilled tomatoes, and seasoned baby potatoes on a bed of salad drizzled with lemon cream dressing topped with shaved parmesan. _the ente elvis: pan-browned duck breast with sauteéd zucchini and mushrooms, bites of apple, cassis, plum, shavings of parmesan with a cranberry vinaigrette. They also have a pasta selection including tagliatelle salsiccia and fettuccine scampi, and appetizers, but I tend to go for the kill straight to point and order one of my faves. You must get dessert, the tartufo nero. A dome of chocolate ice cream covered with cocoa powder with cordial cherries on the side. If you're looking for a place quiet and comfy, come early. If you want to amongst other people and don't mind bustling, come during peak dinner time. Nage & Sauge is on my Munich top 3 for food! Bring good company and an appetite! After reading many good reviews about Nage & Sauge (thanks, fellow Yelpers!), we gave N&S a go for dinner. As they don't take reservations, one should either go early to nab a table or be a little patient and wait for the next table. The place was full when we arrived on a Friday evening, but we still managed to get a table within 10 minutes. N&S definitely gives off a hip vibe: dim lights, slightly unusual (dining areas at multiple levels) but cozy space, indie music played in the background, and cool-looking servers. The hip atmosphere is matched by its hip salads. I tried the Verdura (salad with mozzarella, zucchini, mushrooms with cranberry vinaigrette). The portion was big, and the salad itself tasted great. However, it was odd to have 2 big blocks of hardened mozzarella topped on my salad. It was a little hard to eat, but taste-wise, I didn't mind it too much. While seeking something in Munich that wasn't in the tourist neighborhood and also not beer and sausages, we found what we wanted at Nage & Sauge: a salad. It's a hipstery place and the dishes are a mite pricey. They don't get a lot of foreigners, so the service was chilly to say the least, but I guess it is hard to blame them. Everyone else around us seemed to have no problem with it. I enjoyed an appetizer size salad that was basically grilled veggies in delicious balsamic, and shared my girlfriend's steak salad -- which was enormous. It was exactly what the doctor ordered after a 48 hour binge on beergardens, sausages, and potato salad. read more

Alternative and fun. No reservations and pay by cash only (nearest bank is by Isartor around a 5 minute walk). Food is fantastic! Ordered a spicy carrot soup and the shrimp and calamari salad. Food was the best I have had in Munich, very filling and absolutely delicious! It was all too much to finish, the salad would definitely have been enough. My boyfriend had the chicken with chickpeas, sun dried tomatoes and mint and he loved his as well. Both were washed down with beers. Dinner was 30€ total for both, very reasonable for the high quality food and way the chicken is sourced (comes from a local person). I would most definitely recommend even for non-salad eaters (I almost never order a salad when I eat out). Something there for everyone. Plan to go back again if ever in Munich! read more

I thought this place had German cuisine but it didn't really. None the less then food was pretty good. I got a käse burger and it was pretty good. Chips were so yummy. And my house wine was surprisingly good. Only downside was that the service was pretty crap. I had to walk inside I ask for my bill. And every time I called the waiter to pay she looked away so I had to once again walk inside to pay. Worth a visit if you want a nice place with good food - just not German food. read more

Good food and definitely salads. Best to enjoy while sitting outside on a lovely Sunday evening. Mostly crowded and difficult to get a seat outside as there is limited space. Inside it is bit dark, but nonetheless comfy and relaxed. The service might take its time, but hey, if the place is full, that might be expected. And definitley good food for decent prices. Tiny and dark restaurant that was so full we nearly had to stand outside! Brilliant service, even though there was no place to wait (we were standing in a doorway) we still got our pre dinner drinks and regular updates on where in the waiting line we really were. Salads were divine and HUGE, not quite california portions but definitely in competition with the best california-style salads! Fun crowd of people too, reminded me of Williamsburg. Five stars for food and service, but unfortunately the music was on nightclub-level volume and screaming to be heard is not my thing. read more

This is a great spot for evening drinks with friends: a cozy and slightly hipster-ish atmosphere; a bit of a rustic/dive bar edge and not too obnoxious. One of my favorites in Munich. Good to come early for a light dinner/snack and find a comfy spot - it fills up fast on weekend evenings, although the atmosphere remains relaxed and unpretentious. Crazy that this place is still there. An institution for over a decade the Nage und Sauge (gnaw and suck) had been there for what seems like forever. Especially for the usual turnover of Munich restaurants which seem to last not longer than 2 years. Great little authentic German restaurant - if you don't to avoid the more touristy fare this is the place to go. Just be sure you are aware of how most German restaurants work, seat yourself wherever you like (just be sure to politely ask if the empty spaces are available "Is hier noch frei?") which usually means siting at a table with other people. We were there about a month ago so I have no recollection of what I ordered, but it was all good, good portions, fair price, no complaints. Staff was friendly and would continue to speak in German when I tried to speak German... so I guess it wasn't too terrible. The touristy places will immediately switch over to English, which I guess is is helpful if don't speak much German, but I was looking for the most authentic experience and found it here. read more

Dreck. This restaurant is cashing in on the easy-going young crowd vibe. It really comes through on the food: it's like they went through their fridge, grabbed everything they could hold in their hands, threw it on top of some lettuce and then just salted the hell out of it. It was painful just to eat half. As it happened, though, halfway through the meal a waiter came over to the table and asked if I wouldn't mind moving to a smaller table. This is after I've been sitting at the table for 30 minutes and well into my meal. I paused for a moment and then consented. Weird. But then he walked away. So, I just continued to have a couple more bites of awful bread. Shortly thereafter he came back to the table with an expression like, "well..." - And it was then I realized he wanted ME to move all my dishes and glasses and silverware and everything else on the table to another, smaller table across the CROWDED room. Very professional. Like I said - the young folks who run this joint are inexperienced at cooking and service and I guess just common sense. Definitely pass. read more
