We had 40 minutes or so left on our booking, and had noticed a table near us that were there before we got there and still there, only drinking hot drinks so we couldn't understand at all why we were moved. This really made us feel that we weren't important clients at all. If the pub had overbooked, that wasn't our problem. We have been to this restaurant many times, but this time went away feeling very disappointed.

They never checked whose food was who's, then my sons dinner never arrived. Nobody came back to check. I had to go into the pub to chase them. About 10 mins after me complaining they arrived. They really didn't care. The previous month they had a ridiculous system implemented which seems to have gone, where they force you to order food from the table and not the bar. So you would have to order your drinks separately. They said this was to prevent people leaving without paying. They made a mess of this as well. Regardless I offered to pay it all up front at the till to ease their minds. They said that was not possible. It's all gone a bit wrong up there.

Our table was booked for 7.30 which is when we arrived. At 7.45 we had to go and ask for menus. At 8 we had to go and ask if we could place out order. Our food took a while to arrive so we'd been in the pub almost an hour before we ate anything. Almost as soon as our starter plates were cleared the main arrived which was weird as it was like the food was ready go before we'd finished the 1st course! We then had to go and ask for our bill, and then we had to go and ask to pay it. That means we left our table on 4 separate occasions to ask for service which is simply not good enough. We decide to try the Tripe in Madera sauce, and Ducks liver in Madera (served with an egg on top) to share between the three of us, it was outstanding I would order both again we all really enjoyed the starter. Starters were £5-£6 each. For mains we ordered Fish and Chips x 2 and 1 Toad in the hole, I wanted the wood pigeon but due to a tooth problem decided I better save that for next time, these meals were also outstanding, we all gave it 10/10, the chunky chips, battered fish, mushy peas and tartar sauce were perfect, the Toad in the hole with 2 sausages was also excellent (mains were £8-£9 each) but this came with nothing else so had to order a side portion of chips at £3, we would have loved dessert but simply had no room. The service, staff were all very friendly and efficient (the meals came to a total of £53.50 not inc service) The down side as others have said is the entrance, toilets and outside areas, the bar is very dark, and could be said it is dismal, the cleanliness of the areas is poor but clearly the dated entrance, carpet, rails, windows, lets the whole place down, the location on the side of the river is great and with some imagination with flower boxes, and some refurbishment it would make such a difference, they must lose a lot of customers due to the entrance, we did think twice before entering. All in all I would defiantly return, I felt the service, food and drinks were all so good it was worth risking the stairs, but not sure I would take anyone for a special meal due to the entrance. Named after the famous oarsman and publican who was awarded the Albert Medal for the rescue of over 50 people from the then highly-polluted River Irwell in the 19th century this is obviously a bar/restaurant well rooted in British tradition. Both the food and drink are exactly that- traditional, British, nonesense free, good stuff. The bar is also rather famous for its huge selection of cheeses and pate- perfect pint partners as far as I'm concerned. Dodge the lunch time rush and turn up late afternoon to make sure you get a riverside seat and you will find it one hard place to leave.

I really do think I've caught them more than once at an odd day and the food is generally quite good. My recent order of the bacon chop restored my faith in the restauraunt, it was a high-quality, perfectly cooked chop of meat. The peppercorn sauce style gravy made it even better, again fresh with freshly cooked and seasoned chips. They also serve some of the best gluten-free fish and chips I've tried. There are occasionally issues with Deliveroo which means I look forward even more to trying out this place by dining inside when the current climate and government legislation allows. The biggest improvement they can make is consistency with orders, I've had more than one order which isn't as good but that must have been an off day, they are more than capable of delivering spectacular food and I think they just need to make sure they prioritise quality over speed of delivery, right now the food comes out of the kitchen so fast it's impressive but I'd happily wait a few minutes longer if they can deliver food the quality which I know they can do. 4*
