I've had to change my attitude, as now I can't say that due to Bala Da Dhaba being an exceptionally good restaurant. The food is truly amazing and I was surprised at how much I could eat. I don't know a lot about Indian cuisine but I was very impressed with the vegetarian dishes such as the Muttar Paneer and the Malai Kofta. The waiters are very friendly there where it is a great place to go with a few people to share some of the delectable dishes with a BYO beer or wine. My only criticism is that the setting is very formal and when I'm not in that mood I now get the food to go and head next door to the Lyrebird Lounge, where I can sit in the courtyard on a balmy night and listen to some live music. Either way, the food is where Bala is a winner and will most definitely satisfy the curry lovers but may turn a few, just like it did with me.

I'm a little sad that the old Bala Da Dhaba burned down. I had some good memories of that joint;…read moregood curry, good friends, awful Indian covers of old Eagles songs. But it's the same management and the same menu, so it's not like it's a total loss. And it's a good menu. Actually, it's a pretty average menu - standard Indian food, more or less. But it's done really well. Seriously, it's the best Indian I've had in Melbourne. Only complaint I can raise about them is that the in-house portions tend to be a bit smaller than the takeaway.

After eventually finding a park on this stretch of a busy road, we went inside, sat down and began…read moreto peruse the extensive menu that does offer a few different things than you'd normally find on a typical menu at an Indian restaurant. It is a shame, however, that the staff don't know what the items are, because when bringing out entrees, they gave the wrong items to the wrong people as a result, and they missed out on trying what they wanted (which could be problematic if you have an allergy or something). My samosas (which were SO GOOD) came out first and only after some questioning, the other items came out, but by that time I was done with them, because the wait was quite extensive. In spite of those hiccups, everyone loved their food. The mains were good. The food came out all at once this time, which was great, but there needed to be some juggling as the table sizes are small. The kitchen accomodated the few requests we had which was nice, and everything was delicious (except we just could not taste the garlic on the naan or see the chives, which makes me think they gave us plain naan instead). Basically, other than a few glitches with staff not being spot on that night, the food was great and the atmosphere was nice (along with nice, modern decor) and definitely worth trying again. Parking can be tricky, and so it might be best coming for an early sitting. Would I come back again? Yeah, if I'm in the area, for sure.

Four of us went on a Saturday evening and it was vibrant and buzzing - having received a positive write up in the Herald Sun the previous week. The food was delicious (with most items being gluten free) and prices reasonable. Dishes were from various regions of India and some of the dishes included: Awadhi Lamb- Macedon lambroasted with spices and marsala Goan duck leg - - with a pumpkin cinammon sauce and lychee Prawns varuval - drenched in cocnut yoghurt with cumin fennel and cury leaes Matar ki Tikka - garlic infused peas and broccoli croquettes Butter chicken! with tomato fenugreek and cardomom Naan was great as well. Unusually we had desert that was also very nice: Gulab Jamun - indian donuts soaked in honey and saffron Wine list was also reasonably priced with a self serve beer fridge (there's a dangerous idea).
