Came in after seeing the restaurant on a Google search. After looking at the pictures, the price of a meal looked to be around $10 for a meat and 2 sides. If that was wrong I couldn't have imagined it being more than $15. We got the chicken that came with rice and gravy which was decent. The Mac and cheese was okay but didn't seem homemade. The sweet potato casserole had the look and consistency of baby food. While the lady helping us was real nice in the beginning, for some reason it felt like there was a shift. It was supposed to come with a complimentary dessert which was not offered. We chose to pay the bill with cash even though it seemed like we were being taken advantage of. One meal and 2 waters was $28. I left there very disappointed and wouldn't encourage anyone to eat there. read more

First off, if you're not really looking for this place, it's a little hard to find, but once you do you will be coming back! This is a casual place that makes you feel like you are in someone's back yard. Fold out tables and plastic ware make for easy cleanup, but don't let that put you off! Hubby and I visited for some early afternoon lunch, and it did not disappoint! Specials written on the blackboard were fast sellers mostly with people ordering take out trays. The smothered porkchops in a single meal were enough for 2; heavy, smothered in brown gravy and flat out delicious! Paired with sweet potato casserole and fried okra (my choices) I only wish I wore stretchy pants. My oxtails were extremely salty. My cabbage was extremely salty, very mushy and nasty. The rice was bland and mushy. I was told that they don't use salt but whatever sodium in the food was at stroke level, heart attack even. I couldn't eat that slop! I do not recommend eating here it's very unhealthy. Food was great, we went there twice in the 3 days we were there and had no complaints. Smothered and fried pork chops with sides, pork and gravy, fried ribs, greens were unbelievable. Mac and Cheese was good, could have had a little baked crust on it but it was gone!!. I am not big on the plastic fork and knife is the reason for a 4 and not a 5. Best soul food I have ever had. I have wanted to try this place for years and took the opportunity while visiting home for the holidays. I walked in and was pleasantly surprised to see a girl I haven't seen since high-school running the place. I had no idea it was her family's restaurant or I would've come sooner. She displays the best customer service and provides a family-like experience for diners. She was super communicative when items were out or if things were taking longer and why. I live in Texas now, and it's surprisingly hard to find good fried chicken and collard greens where I live. This place is the best mix of incredible service and food. Don't walk, run. You will not be able to enter the business to get your food, call ahead and place the order. The attendant will then come outside and ask you for your name and get your payment for your order. The wait was about 10 minutes after i arrived. I ordered the catfish fillets, collard greens, fried okra and a Lemonade. My order came out piping hot, hot to wear the styrofoam began to change shape. The lemonade is good make sure you ask for a larger size because after you taste how good it is you will then realize that you just drank it all. The portion size was large I didn't finish it in one sitting. Seasoning was on point for each item and as I said up top it was hot, even after the 15 minute drive back to my residence. The food was good with generous portions. Evidently the a/c wasn't working. The front door was opened to let out the heat, but it also let in the flies. I arrived approximately five minutes after opening and was seated at the front door under a loud tv and freshly mopped floors that were still wet. On the one hand, you want to tell everybody how wonderful it is. On the other, you don't want to go back someday and find a line out the door because it's become so popular. It's small, unassuming, short menu which mostly changes daily, and your entree choice includes a couple of vegetables and dessert. There are five-six choices daily, all made from scratch. ALL MADE FROM SCRATCH. In a way, it reminds me of Willie Mae's Scotch House in New Orleans, before Katrina. Four tables, one woman, a cast-iron skillet and the best fried chicken you've ever had anywhere. Whatever your choice of entree at Nana J's, be prepared to have it be the best version of that dish you've ever had anywhere. The same claim for the sides and dessert. I went with fried catfish, some days they have filets, some days whole, bone-in, some days both. My side choices were potato salad and collard greens. A piece of cornbread is included on every plate; dessert the day I was in was banana pudding, complete with the requisite 'nilla wafers. The fish was done perfectly, crispy breading, nicely seasoned, with steaming flaking moist flesh enclosed. The house-made tartar sauce was the best I have ever had anywhere, yes, you could spoon it if you were inclined. It was so far beyond the usual glop of mayo and pickle bits or chives. Potato salad was superb, it was like creamy deviled eggs with potato bits. Went down easy. Likewise the greens, like potato salad a dish most restaurants seem to deliberately screw up. Nana J's was smoky, salty, crisp and buttery at the same time. Could almost convince me to be a vegetarian. OK, not quite. But you get my point. Banana pudding, something I haven't had since childhood since I'm not much for desserts on any occasion. Wonderful. Flavorful, smooth, creamy, with pieces of vanilla wafer. As it should be. I posted after I left the restaurant that I've been fortunate to have dined in 65 countries, and this meal easily popped into my list of top five meals anywhere, anytime. Meant it. I go to the Gulf Coast every year, and hands down I've never had better food on the coast. Personable, friendly, charming, helpful host/server as well. They have a website, but it doesn't tell you much. You'd be much better off checking their Facebook entries for the daily menu. Go eat here. Often. But don't tell anybody else about it! read more

This review is long overdue! Visited here last month and heard about famous Nana J's from Dennis at the airport. He made sure to know we'd be missing out if we didn't stop here on our trip. I knew the food would be good, but I wasn't expecting it to be AMAZING, which it was. We tried their wings, mac and cheese, friend ocra, cornbread, rice, broccoli and cheese, and most importantly...their smothered pork chops. All; delicious! I've never had better tasting pork chops than I've had here. So we'll seasoned and literally came right off the bone. I was even more impressed to learn they use NO SALT in any of their dishes. Saturday, the entrees were: Pork roast Fish and shrimp platter Fried whole catfish Fried chicken wings Fried or smothered pork chop The sides were: Mac n cheese Greens Fried okra Red beans and rice Black eyed peas Potato salad Sweet potato casserole French fries Every plate also came with cornbread and a small cup of peach cobbler We had a group of six and we were able to try everything and let me say it was all fantastic. Now this is some real good soul food done right. The smothered pork chops and the fried chicken were the stars of the meal. That gravy is unbelievable and the fried chicken is something special with a seasoning that really kicks it up a notch. I heard the catfish is a must have but that had already run out by the time we got there. Other than that, the collard greens are sensational, and the other apps really hit home- it's what you would expect from good home cooking. The only passes would be the mac and cheese that had the mushy boxed taste and the ultra dry cornbread. Don't make the same mistake we did by calling in your order the minute this place opens. We liked it! We went later in the afternoon on a weekend, so unfortunately they were out of some sides. It's a bit confusing as a first timer as there were no menu prices or anything, just the daily sides/meats. I think I would order just a veggie plate because the sides were the standout to me. Even the rice & gravy had delicious flavor, mac and cheese reminded me of my mom's, and their potato salad was the best I have ever had. The meats were fine, but my husband's pork chop was dry and on the tough side. Dessert wasn't mentioned so I didn't ask but I assumed they had already ran out. I think they could benefit from some basic menus with prices as it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere how much a meat + 2 veggies cost, but it was around $12 or so (drink separate). This is with out a doubt a typical whole in the wall looking mom and pops shop that serves home made quality food. the building seems as though it would be very dirty. it is not, the inside is very clean and it says that they got an A in their health food inspection. i would have given it 5 stars however i am assuming that their AC was broken because there was a pint size fan in the corner that was suppose to do the job of AC - it wasn't. with that being said, it was extremely hot. the server was mildly friendly however towards the end of our meal she stopped giving us refills and basically forgot about us. however, the food portion itself was pleasant and enough to take some left overs home. The prices are fair also. if you go i strong suggest either the sweet tea or the lemonade; they are both home made tasting. I will be returning back to this place! hopefully the AC is fixed by then. read more

Cozy, and at home feel limited parking. Went slightly after the lunch rush. They are severely under staffed. They had one girl hosting and serving also busting the tables. We waited 30 mins to be seated, as the host took To-go orders. Once seated we waited an other 20 mins for no service. Not even water was brought to the table. Once again as the waitress was taking To-go orders and orders of other tables that were not even seated half the time we were. I have heard great things about their food however I may never know. I don't see myself going back anytime soon since I'll have to schedule my whole day around just in case it takes the same anount of time of waiting around to be seated and to order and who knows how long I'll wait for food to be made. read more

The tables weren't clean and had food pieces from the last customer and it wasn't just one table it was all the empty ones. Wasn't a good start at the beginning but I was patient enough to give it a chance. The host finally cleaned the table and was pretty outgoing so I knew things will get better from there. They give you a drink as well and a small desert. Let me just say they really do give you a lot. The wings are actually pretty big and meaty. The fried ribs are amazing and I definitely recommend them. I believe the macaroni and cheese is baked as well so it's a little dry but the flavor is still really good. When I got there, I got sat down quickly. I was waiting for a menu when I got sat but the menu was on a chalk board stand. She explained the menu changes daily, which I thought is pretty interesting. I ordered the Fish strips (fried fish), came with two sides so I got the potato salad and fried okra. When I got my food, it looked amazing. Definitely a lot of food and tastes really good. I did ordered tarter sauce when I received my food and it took roughly 10 mins to get. She apologized that it took long for that because it's homemade. When I arrived I thought the place was no longer opened because it seemed dark from the street. When I turned I the lot I saw the red Open sign. The place is small but tidy, 5 or 6 tables and a largr mural of trees in the wall. The menu is on a chalk board because the young lady told us it changes daily. I ordered the smothered pork chops/gravy, Blk eyed peas/green beans, broc/cheese (broc/cheese are whipped like mash pot) cornbread and rice/gravy cones with the entree. The food was hot and delicious. It was not overly seasoned how some Soul Food restaurants are. It was just right. they also givr a sample of banana pudding in a small cup. while we were there the phone was ringing constantly for take out orders. As I said before the place is small with only 5 or 6 tables so order to go and enjoy this delicious food. The young lady did tell us that Na Na J will be featured on the Food Network at the end of April. Who knows, years from now Na Na J's may have a chain of Na Na Js. hell, why not. read more

Visiting from out of town and found this little jewel. The building is small and the dining area is tiny but the food is magnificent. I had the Shrimp/Catfish Blue Plate Special with a side of greens and dirty rice. The fried shrimp and fish was very tasty and not greasy. The greens were well prepared with bits of ham hock and the dirty rice was the real deal. The wife had the fried catfish with mac and cheese and fried okra. Highly recommend! read more
