Bottom Line: A pottery studio and shop. Nancyware has been in business in this Manteo Waterside location for about 15 years. She uses this space as her studio space and her storefront so you can see what her current pottery-wheel project is. The nice thing about pottery is that it is practical because it's oven, dishwasher and microwave safe. That means instead of serving holiday pie in a clear glass Pyrex dish, you can really dress it up in a handmade piece of art in which you can bake it, refrigerate leftovers, heat up leftovers and finally put the empty pan in the dishwasher. The store includes pieces for purchase including some seconds. If you don't see exactly what you want, be sure to ask. I read another Yelper's horrific encounter with the owner regarding the use of a cell phone in the studio/shop. That review was definitely disheartening but I have to objectively say that my experience was very welcoming, thankfully. I did see a sign during my mid-August visit that said the store was cell phone free so I did put away my phone out of respect for the artist and small business owner even though that is the device I often use to spread the word about local businesses. read more

I love pottery, so when I found out about this local OBX potter in Manteo, I knew it was a must visit. I was quite surprised by the extremely small space in which the store was located. It would not be able to accommodate more than three or four customers comfortably. Pros: The shop is also the artist's studio. You can watch the pieces being made from the large window on the exterior of the shop, and the pieces she makes are of good quality. Cons: As I mentioned, I love pottery and have shopped quite a few galleries and shops in various locations. These pieces, in my opinion, were overpriced. I would gladly have paid a higher price for something truly unique, but these items were mostly basic and felt almost mass-produced. I remember being greeted by the artist, but nothing about her manner made the visit exceptional. A few days ago my teenage daughter and her grandmother were potential customers visiting this establishment. I'm not sure if it was the owner or another employee but they both were treated unkindly. My daughter was using her phone to Snapchat friends and the person working there accused her of taking pics of the merchandise (she's 14 and could care less) When my daughter told her she wasn't taking pics the lady said she knows how teenagers are and continued to follow her and yell at her for having her phone out. Put a sign out if you don't want customers to use their phones in your establishment! Additionally, my mother-in-law was looking at a card, which she intended to purchase, but it was taken OUT OF HER HANDS and put back. Seriously? I cannot attest to the quality of the merchandise but if you expect good customer service than this may not be place for you. read more

Was looking around the shop--without my cell phone--and attempted to engage the owner by asking about the pottery, Klein and pottery wheel. The owner gave one or two word answers, that clearly had a condescending tone. What what I saw the pottery was well made, but the shapes, and glazing was uninspiring, and the prices too high. read more

Nancy has a yearly series of Christmas ornaments with hand painted designs. She has carved pieces, unique colors of clay that she has created herself, and kitchen ware that glow with warm glazes. The selection is vast with pie plates, a variety of mugs, sponge holders, spoon rests, toothpick holders and plates of various sizes. The store is on a corner and as a perk the artist's studio is behind the counter! You'll see what Nancy is currently working on and her kiln. Be sure and ask about the pendants. There are a few other artists' works for sale as well. Don't miss this treasure trove. If you go on a Saturday in the summer the outdoor market is right next door with more artists' works and some food stuffs. Manteo also is a lovely waterfront town. Go! read more
