12 PERi-PERi Wings with PERi Ranch chips
Walter B.

Went last night for happy hour with two coworkers. It was not busy. Employees were friendly and courteous. Tables were clean. Condiment, utensils, and drink area were clean. We had a dozen medium wings, six buffalo wings, the skewers, and peri ranch chips. We each tried everything and it was all excellent. My only negative is the music was loud. Good, but loud.

Dining area
Rikin S.

Service was friendly and fast. Place was relatively clean. Outdoor seating area is nice but compact. Has a mix of different seating types from high tops to tables, benches to stools, and pergola to umbrella style shade. Menus are no through scanning a QR code there's no menu to be physically govern or even hanging on the walls. Presentation of the food is nicely done with colorful plates and well presented meals. Quantity is as expected so it's nice they didn't try to skip but it's also not overly abundant. The hummus can probably feed 2 people that have an appetite and more if you're willing to share and it's just a starter. The veggie burger was fantastic; flavorful and nicely topped. I removed 1 star because the price point is high, but then again everything has shot up in price from before.

Great food and great service as I've come to expect from most Nando's. The place was practically empty at around 2 pm on a nice Sunday. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The space was very neat and well kept. Condiment/utensil/fountain drink area was very neat and organized. Food was ordered via scanning a QR code and through the app/website. You pay (and tip) through the app/site as well. The servers brought our food over in about 10-15 minutes. Food (wings, fries, rice and skewers) were all very good. Overall a good experience, my only issue/recommendation was more bathrooms. They currently have two (2) gender neutral bathrooms. When I was about ready to leave, I had to wait about 10-15 minutes for a bathroom to become available (both were seemingly occupied by employees). This was when the restaurant was empty....I can't imagine how long that wait would be if the restaurant was busier. The area is nice with a lot of eating options. Parking can be tough, but there is a reasonably-priced outdoor lot at Water Street and 4th Street. ($2-$3 per hour)

The hummus was really good on this dish.

Had an early dinner here last night. We got a table inside by the window. There was also a outside patio area. We placed our order by cell phone. It took a while to come up. The waitress brought us glasses for our drinks. The drinks were self serve and there were quite a few options to choose from. There was also an area to choose your own peri peri sauces. Everything from mild to hot. Our meals were all tasty. Chicken had a fantastic spicy taste that lingers in the mouth after you're done eating. Definitely a place to try. They also have takeout.

1/4 Chicken Leg
Maggie H.

I'll start with my experience with the chicken. The leg had a hot taste in my mouth and pairs with the crispy french fries. The wings were a bit too charcoaled and portion was quite small. The atmosphere is casual and inviting. It's ideal for a night out with friends or family. The staff was friendly and had great energy.

Nando's advertised Mac bowl.

The portion sizes have gotten way too small. These are pretty expensive meal prices and we should actually be getting a whole meal. It has been a recurring problem in the last few months. Another time was getting a tiny piece of chicken on the sandwich that was less than half of the size of the bread. I'm shocked by how much different and smaller my bowl ended up being from Nando's. And for almost $20 after tax!!! This location is not at all what it used to be and something needs to be changed. I'm extremely disappointed by this rip off.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Jayme S.

Something different for me while traveling in DC for business. I've never had African food or peri-peri but I really enjoyed my meal from this growing chain of restaurants. The chicken was marinated with so much flavor from the peri-peri sauce and then it had good char from grilling. Very tender as well. The variation of flavors from the sides on my Peri-Peri Chicken Rainbow Bowl were great to later keep tasting the pepper sauce. I really enjoyed the side of Macho Peas and the hummus served on my entree as well. The Roasted Brussel Sprouts were also tasty. The service was a little complicated having to order and checkout from an app, but the people working were friendly and helpful.

PERi Chicken Rainbow Bowl

Was slightly underwhelmed by the hype surrounding Nando's Peri-Peri. The photos on the menu make it seem like you'll get more meat/food but ended up with less then 4 oz of chicken. The flavor of the mango and lime seasoning was good. We got there with plenty of open tables and took about 35 minutes to get our food from time of order. Overall, had an alright experience.

The awning outside needs refurbishment and inside furniture is not updated. It's dark inside, almost like a night club. Perhaps it is sometimes. I did not like the decor, it was a little run down and honestly did not match up to the prices. The service was also disappointing. I felt that staff lacked a bit of professionalism and they rarely checked on us. The plates are huge. That is a plus. My partner ordered the goat and I tried the red snapper. I think one plate is big enough to share. I like the spinach, but everything needed a bit of salt. While the red snapper was coated in a lovely tomato and red pepper gravy, I felt it made the crispyness of the fried fish disappear and it was kind of soggy. Maybe you can ask for the gravy on the side. The food is not bad, but given the physical establishment and the service I wouldn't return.

Our waiter was so charismatic, helpful, and kind. He even turned up the music in our corner of the restaurant upon request! The food was generally good, just a bit on the drier end. Even the stew wasn't really soupy. So if you were trying to mix some rice with some stew, you basically got cake on your plate. Regardless, everything was seasoned to absolute perfection. Also, don't know if this matters but it may matter to some- though this is an East African Restaurant, the menu is slightly more Kenyan than Ugandan. Something to keep in your expectations when visiting!

The service was amazing, especially our waiter, Z. We were celebrating a friend's birthday, and the staff allowed us to bring in cupcakes from Baked & Wired. We stayed a little past closing to finish celebrating, but no one made us feel rushed or tried to push us out. We even had the opportunity to meet the chef, which was a nice touch. For appetizers, we ordered the hamachi crudo, scallop crudo, plantains, roti, eggplant, and suya. The eggplant was easily the standout and honestly some of the best eggplant I've ever had--10/10. The roti paired really well with it. The plantains were also very good, and it seemed like the dishes featured two different preparations of plantain. The suya and scallop crudo were okay, but not the most memorable items of the night. For our mains, we had the jollof rice with duck and the medium-rare ribeye. The jollof had a distinctly Ghanaian flavor, possibly with a touch of crayfish, and the egg was a nice addition. The duck was flavorful, although the texture was a little tougher than I expected. The ribeye was amazing and cooked well, though the chimichurri was applied a little heavily for my taste. Overall, we had a great experience. The excellent service, welcoming atmosphere, eggplant, plantains, jollof/duck, and ribeye were the highlights of the evening.

Dinner, however, is an entirely different experience and I'm glad I gave it another chance. The space alone sets the tone, beautiful decor across two floors of dining. We were seated on the second floor near the open kitchen and watching the chefs work while dishes were carried out around us added a whole layer to the evening. Dinner and a show, essentially. The wine menu is extensive and worth taking your time with. For starters we tried the crispy okra fries which were a great introduction to what was coming. The main event featured jollof duck pot, broiled branzino, tomahawk steak and crab fried rice -- everything arrived bursting with flavor. Even when one dish didn't fully land for someone at the table, something else more than compensated. That's the sign of a well rounded menu. Contemporary Ghanaian cuisine done at this level deserves its flowers and Elmina is delivering. I'm already looking forward to returning.

The chicken came out with blackened edges because of their preparation method. I don't prefer that taste, but others may. I did not find the sauce to be particularly spicy so I added the 'extra hot' sauce on the side, which helped to add more flavor. Surprisingly, the chicken breast was very moist, along with the thigh. The ambience is casual and relaxed. There are plenty circular or modular seats along with smaller tables along the back end of the restaurant. My biggest complaint was their restrooms. They have gender neutral restrooms; two stalls total. Both restrooms were in great need of cleaning with a LOT of bodily fluids all along the toilets and floors. Also, there was no option for hand towels, only an air blower to dry your hands, which is one of the most disgusting ways to dry freshly washed hands. I recommend either creating one male and one female stall instead of unisex because men and women have very different habits in the restroom. On the positive side, Carolina and Barian were quite helpful and kind. They made the overall experience better.

Once we realized how ordering worked, everyone went to the counter. I ordered last, but my meal was fairly simple: The Wingman (6 wings with PERi Chips and PERi-PERi ranch) plus a side of rice from the kids' menu. Everyone else received their food, ate, and finished before my order ever came out. To the staff's credit, one employee noticed I still hadn't been served and appeared to rush my order. When my food finally arrived, I was disappointed to find one of my six wings was so small and burnt that it wasn't edible (see photo). Some of the other chicken served to our table was also a little over-charred. On the positive side, I really enjoyed the lavender lemonade, and I liked the variety of PERi-PERi sauces available to customize the flavor and heat level. Overall, the experience had some service and food quality issues, but there were enough positives that I'd be willing to give Nando's another try. Hopefully, the next visit will be smoother.

The asparagus was decent but nothing to write home about. Hummus was... Hummus. The carrot havuc was quite good but the beet borani was the crowd pleaser. The lamb kebob was my favorite part of the meal - perfectly cooked, rightly sized, and an excellent cut of meat. The mushy peas we'd been looking forward to aren't even on the menu anymore, which was its own small disappointment. On the bright side, I ordered a 5 oz glass of wine and got what looked like a double pour. Not complaining... but it does sum up the vibe.
