Naniwa-Ya Ramen can be found at Ala Moana Center's Food Court. I've eaten here a few times over the years. The ramen is decent but nothing that knocks your socks off. I usually get the regular miso ramen. Today I decided that I wanted to try the calamari miso. It wasn't bad and they gave quite a few pieces of calamari. The calamari was tender and the noodles were perfect, not too soft and not too chewy. As always, the miso base was just too salty. I was getting a sodium high! I kept gulping down water. The one thing I like about this place is that they provide garlic chips. OMG, they're so good! If you just eat it on the side and not put it in the soup base, it's crispy. They have it with their condiments so you can take as much as you want. I always take a scoop full of it. I've also had their gyoza and it's pretty good. It's on the smaller side but very tasty. The person that I had lunch with got the pork yakisoba. I didn't taste it but it looked good. It was a generous portion. She couldn't finish it and had to ask for a take out box. read more

Many reviews before me has commented on how it is expensive for food court food, how this broth is super oily, how the beef is fatty, stringy, yet tender. 1. You are in a super tourist trap setting of a food court. It is humid and hot in there no matter how high the air conditioning is on. The price tag is high because they're in a heavily tourist location. You can go by car to a less crowded destination a mile away from the crowd and get ramen, but they might not have spicy beef ramen. 2. Spicy beef soup is made with the cheapest fatty cuts of meat. The broth is slow cooked for hours to render the fat in order to bring out that delicious beef flavor. In that slow cooking process, it also tenderize the meat. Hence, the stringy yet tender texture. It almost has a pulled pork, fall apart in your mouth experience. The oily glaze on top of the soup cannot be helped. Hot Chili oil is added to the soup to give the broth its signature heat. In addition, the portion you receive will have cuts of meat that has fat on them. It is a fast food joint and they will not go through the process of straining your broth through a cheese cloth to get rid of the excess fat. You want that clean no oil in your soup experience? Go to a sit down restaurant. 3. I did not experience long waits for my order of spicy beef ramen like other people did. My first visit was on a Saturday night at 7 PM and again on a Tuesday afternoon, with friendly staff and receive my order within minutes of placing my order. My overall experience was wonderful. The spicy ginger on top of my noodles should be on the side because not everyone likes spicy ginger and no one should have to sit around picking it out of their meal. Bad move on my part because it was honestly the worst food I've ever had. I ordered the lime kimchi ramen but when I picked up my order, it just looked and tasted like instant ramen noodles. $11.30 for that??? The broth tasted like super salty water and when I squeezed some lime in it, it just made it taste worse. No lime flavor whatsoever and the kimchi tasted off. I hate wasting food, so I tried to eat as much of it as possible but couldn't physically do it because it made me so sick. I think I ate about a quarter of it and ended up throwing the whole thing away. That's the first time I've ever thrown food away that I don't like, and I usually finish my food even if it's not good. It was just that bad. I woke up in the middle of the night throwing it up and felt sick all day. What a great way to spend my vacation, right? My advice: go to the Japanese food court instead. I've been going to this place for years without any complaints. The newer owners started off by putting just a little soup and paper thin char siu. I don't like bean sprouts so always ask for a little extra bamboo instead of sprouts. Last time I got five tiny slivers and have never been given extra bamboo. The two women in the back seem to decide if they like you or not. I guess they don't like me since I complained about the amount of soup. The thing is that their food is tasty, but when I spend fifty dollars on manapua, ramen for my grandchildren (both plain, no meat), I think some extra bamboo isn't asking too much. I have recently eaten at Steak and Fish twice and Yummy Korean twice instead of Naniwaya. Oh, and when I ask for extra napkins since they only give you one and I end up using it to wipe the table since their lid drops soup all over when you take it off, I get ONE more napkin. This is the worst place to spend your money. They were very slow when I was there. It was just I and a lady behind me, two customers during lunch hours. An elderly man at the cashier & he took my order. I ordered one calamari miso ramen noodle soup, 7 pieces of gyoza & a side of marinated bamboo. I asked the cashier, ordering elderly man not to put any ramen in my soup but replace with some green vegetables. He charged me $1.50 extra for the green vegetable even though I didn't want any ramen. I got my foods very quickly due to not a lot of customers at their court. When I opened my soup, there was ramen and no green vegetables. I brought it back within 10 minutes and told the man that they got my soup wrong. He told me that I never said that I don't want ramen. We went back & forth for at least 2 mins. He took my soup back and placed it in the hand washing station behind him. That's one bad thing that the health department would write him up. He then told the two ladies who were cooking in the open kitchen behind him to remake my soup. The whole time, I watched them to make sure they get my soup right. Sure enough, they gave me a soup with some spinach & red onion. I came up to the elderly cashier and told him that I ordered a calamari soup. Therefore, I want some calamari. By then, he asked me for the receipt. I told him I don't have with me but he can look at the soup in the hand washing sink which I brought back. He refused to do that. By that time, I'm no longer want to eat the soup. I asked him to take back the soup & reimburse my money. He refused to do so. He took back the second soup and told the two lady cooks in his own language. So one of the lady brought me a soup with bean sprouts, few small calamari pieces, some fried garlics & green onions. I was watching the lady cooks the whole time so I know there was no spinach in that soup. I opened the soup & asked the lady cook where's the spinach. She answered me it's at the bottom. I went back to my table & we found the receipt. My boyfriend came up to the cashier, showed him the receipt & told the cashier that my girlfriend paid a lot of money for her foods and you never get it right from the first place. It's wrong!!! The elderly cashier man was mumbling. He couldn't make any words out of his mouth. I gave one star for the gyoza & marinade bamboo. They're not bad. On chilly days or days when I feel under the weather and I am at the shopping center...here's a place where I order my ramen. I always order the wonton ramen and occasionally the 5 piece gyoza. I come here a lot of times one of the employees asked if I was an employee of Ala Moana Shopping Center....I told her "No I am not an employee. I just got off of work this morning and decided to come to Honolulu for the morning instead of staying in Waianae." (Yeah I used to work the graveyard shift at a 24 hour convenience store and gas station). The employee then gives me a business card at the time of my purchase. With each bowl purchased you receive 1 stamp. Collect 10 stamps and you receive 1 free menu item. There's no cash value on the card and it can not be combined with any other offers. Besides the ramen bowl.....customers can also order manapua, pork hash, or even yakisoba noodles. We met some friends who are vacationing from the Bay Area and decided to grab a quick lunch today. We stopped here and got some ramen and some gyozas. Everything tasted good, was reasonably priced and everyone enjoyed the food. Only problem is, my little guy got food poisoning from eating here. It was the gyozas! I should've known as they were cold when we got them so they'd been sitting there for god knows how long. What a Mother's Day I've had today. The little guy complained of stomach ache so I took him to the bathroom thinking it was #2. Well, it was #2 for a short while before he was screaming out in pain. I'd never had Naniwa-Ya Ramen before so seeing as this vendor was the first Ramen place I found i decided to purchase my warm bowl of Wakame from here. While waiting, you can see how prepared and efficient they are with their bowls and plate setup. The service and wait time took a lot less for me here than the other food vendors I happened to go to before ( around 5 mins, which helps when you're on lunch break and need to go back to work at a certain time). The Ramen was surprisingly tasty! Their broth is well-seasoned and enhanced by the roasted garlic they use. The portions are big, I had so much wakame to last me from start to finish. The noodles were good, although I just prefer my noodles more chewy but for food court ramen, I wasn't complaining. For the price I'd say you get your money's worth. read more

Wow, such a vast array of ratings. Don't ask me why I still wanted a hot bowl of ramen on the hottest day during my short stay in Oahu. I ordered the newest menu item, pork kimchee ramen. Was Christmas shopping at Ala Moana and stopped into the food court for a quick bit to eat. Naniwa was the only place without a line. I am always up to try new places so I figured I'd give it a shot. If you haven't had ramen before or been to a ramen only joint, don't worry because they have a picture book at the counter! I got the vegetable ramen which sounded pretty pleasing since I was still getting over a cold. It showed up at the counter only a few minutes after ordering it, in a steaming styrofoam bowl with a died turnip floating on top of ooey-gooey goodness. I LOVE ramen and for the price ($8) this place didn't get me down. It was piping hot from the beginning right down to the very last drop as I lifted the bowl and drank every last drop. Went there today and had their pork kim chee ramen ($9) and 3 gyoza ($2.75). Ramen bowl is delicious and pretty sizeable; I usually can eat only 1/2 the bowl. Then why the additional gyoza, you ask? I like the variety. Wish is they would offer a combo like Ramen Nakamura, but the ala cart prices are pretty reasonable given that its in the mall. Service is fast and friendly. Let me start by saying this is a ramen place in a mall food court. So, solid effort, did not get food poisoning, and did not leave hungry. If that's what you're after, stop here. Secondly, vegetarians beware. I've been a vegetarian for years and, I'm strict about it, but, I'm not going to sue if it turns out something I ate was made with beef broth. I ordered the veggie ramen and it came with fish cake. Again, I understand we're talking about shopping mall ramen, but, if you want to know why the three star rating, that's why. Lastly, and this is clearly my inner four year old coming out, something smells funny in the broth. Not like it's spoiled, but just odd. So I always wait there for a minimum of 8 minutes there. The people standing in line behind me gets their food first before I do.
