Located right in the middle of everything in the downtown district, this is a site not to be missed! Beautiful exterior architecture and a grand staircase. Two floors, with a range of books, a corner for free books for the taking, restrooms in the lower level, and friendly staff. They have events year round including lectures and special exhibits. I wish I had more time to explore!

Check online for any programming, too; we stumbled upon a really great outdoor show for young kids with music and dancing - very memorable and fun. We got our kid's first library card here, even as a non-local. The kid book section is right in front with a great selection. There's also a kid's bathroom. There are extra bathrooms for adults in the basement, but they took forever.

It's odd that one of the institutions I have the most praise for on this island is the police…read moredepartment. I can't give them more than three stars on principle, although the words "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" certainly applies in certain circumstances. Those circumstances being, "if you're rich and white." Which, if you're on Nantucket, is probably the case. I can't speak for the experiences of the island's substantial immigrant worker community. Those of them I'd heard speak poorly of the police department didn't do so objectively. They'd either committed a crime or were in this country illegally, in which case they were really more worried about state and federal authorities... The cops out here are kind, relaxed and helpful. They don't get in people's faces just because they can. They only step in when they see something that's going to be a problem. So if they see people drinking a beer on the beach, or riding in the back of a pickup truck, or some other minute thing that would bring hell down on you on the mainland, they'll just let you be. Like in a real country. I've seen these guys break up parties simply by reminding the host that it's late and they (the host) were being rude to their neighbors; I've seen them give rides to people. They really do the protect and serve thing, which I've never seen anywhere else... And I'm fully aware that this is only because the island is loaded with cash and everyone is white. The reason they don't bust people for minor infractions? Because rich white people will sue. So can you enjoy the slack these people give? Or should you despise it as the poisoned fruit of privilege?

Its a good thing I actually think the island's police force deserves five stars because I'd be too…read morescared to rate them any less. I think the summer police get a little carried away at times. The full timers are a combo of Axel Foley and Dirty Harry. They are relaxed, professional, and some other adjective that I haven't learned yet.
