    Chef's Nigiri Omakase
    Karen T.

My husband and I chose Naoki to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had a reservation for 4:45pm just in case and the parking lot was almost full. We got seated immediately but it took a while to get our order in. We started with the uni pasta to share, which came out relatively quickly. The pasta was well coated and tasted great, but portion seemed a bit small compared to other photos posted. We both opted for the chef's nigiri omakase that ended up being $65 each. The nigiri pieces were big and flavorful with a beautiful presentation. Slightly on the higher end compared to other sushi restaurants I've been to. Found out they do offer an omakase dining experience for $195 per person but reservations are required. Overall, food was great. Wait staff were very busy, so service was a bit slow. Definitely worth a visit.

Salmon Skin and Negihama Hand rolls

Stopped here on a whim as the other sushi spot we wanted to go to was too long of a wait. We were seated very promptly on an early Friday evening and found the decor very nice and the staff very welcoming. Unfortunately, that ends the nice experience of our meal. We ordered quite a variety of dishes with the expectation of fresh and quality fish. We ordered the hamachi kama to start and this was dry and not very flakey which hints that the cut of fish served to us was not very fresh. Next was the Paris Sashimi (16 pcs for $52) - for the price I expected better quality pieces of fish but this was also disappointing as the seaweed salad was the best tasting item on the plate. I am very sorry to say the rainbow roll was the most unappetizing rainbow roll I have ever seen... I expected something more colorful and slightly larger pieces of fish but it seemed to lean too heavily on the topiko topping for any sort of color. The imitation crab filling had too much mayo/cream cheese and completely overpowered the taste of the roll. This was our least favorite. I honestly couldn't believe this was an $18 roll We finished off with Salmon Skin Cucumber and Negihama handrolls. The salmon skin was tossed in an overly sweet marinade which completely took away the crispy texture of the salmon skin. Not enjoyable. The negihama hand roll was the best thing out of our entire meal and the only thing I ate that had no negative comments. Overall, I expected a better quality here, especially for the high prices that are charged for each dish. I really can not recommend this spot and will not be back.

First time here, service was great! We had the spicy edamame, tuna to start both were very good. Sushi rolls we had Suki and Lor both were very tasty! The restaurant was clean, designed really nice and it was a great experience overall. They do take reservations if needed.

I was surprised to see a new sushi restaurant at this location that was previously Koi. I was curious to try it because we enjoyed Koi very much, especially the happy hour. They have transformed the interior with cushion seats lining the wall. Modern decor, one private tatami room and it looks like they replace the furniture. Dim lightning with romantic vibe. A nice place to take your first date! :-) OYSTERS - It was fresh with a nice presentation. The sauce was good and nicely incorporated with the oyster. CAMILA ROLL with shrimp tempura, scallop, lemon inside, topped with salmon and mayo. I don't see lemon inside the roll that often. It was a refreshing experience. UNAGI AVOCADO was average. The rice wasn't packed tight enough as grains of rice was falling off before the piece could reach my mouth. IKURA was also average. Not the best I had but wasn't bad. PARIS SASHIMI (16 pcs.) Pieces were cut on the thinner side but fresh. I was expecting to have more side stuff like sunomono salad or a bit more seaweed salad. It would also be helpful for the waitress to announce each type of fish. I had an idea what they are but my friend didn't. Also, this came at least an hour after we sat down. At one point, I wonder if they forgot it because it wasn't that busy when we got there. The waitress did apologize and offered us another bottle of hot sake or took off the one we had. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I think there is room for improvement. I hope to see that they will add special dishes or happy hour to the menu.

WHAT WE GOT: The Lor, The Phoenix, The triple trouble and pepperfin. The Lor was my favorite! they top it off with this garlic chili oil alongside the tempura jalapeño it just makes the best combo. It also has asparagus in it which made me tilt my head a little but it went so well with the roll. The Triple trouble has lemon on it and added a good balance with the other rolls, a good palate cleanser! The Phoenix was my next favorite, it had a hint of cream cheese with the crunchy garlic oil it and the fried leeks!! so yum. Looking to come back and try other rolls. The pepper fin was good, nothing spectacular. I like my pepperfin fatty. This had more of a bite to it. AMBIANCE/SERVICE: They replaced my old sushi spot but it didn't disappoint. Service was a little slow but attentive servers. Only two servers, one more would definitely help! The restaurant has a nice romantic vibe. Spent about $85 in total which wasn't horrible, always willing to pay for good quality fish.

Came here with my friend for dinner after driving by so many times. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful on the inside, lots of seating at the bar where the chefs prepare the food and there's tvs to watch sports (which we did for football Monday), booths, and tables too. It is a great spot for a date night or dinner with friends. The staff were super nice and friendly, the chefs were so great when it came to giving us recommendations and checking on how we were doing. We shared spicy edamame which has a decent level of spice from the chili powder they put. I ordered the Hinoka roll (recommended to me) and it was delicious! The food same quickly and was so good, will definitely be back to try more!

Two item bento with chicken katsu and mixed tempura was great!

Naoki is officially the new IT spot for Japanese! The husband and I enjoyed Koi (the previous Japanese restaurant that was at this location) and were saddened when they closed. Luckily, Naoki has filled this location and are dare I say, even better! The family and I popped in here for the husband's birthday lunch (father-in-law made a reservation for 11am but they were empty until about noon, then it got busy). The interior is gorgeous! Freshly renovated, tasteful, and clean. We all ordered bento boxes and were stuffed by the end of our meals. Bento lunch comes with the typical miso soup, rice, and salad. My two items were the chicken katsu and mixed tempura. The bento was great and delicious. We loved it! Highly recommend! We'll be back!

The food here is sooo good but the service is so bad. Honestly one of the best sushi spots in sac but I've been here twice now and the service is horrible. They only had a few tables tonight and our waitress not once came up to us to ask how the food was or to refill our drinks. She came by at the end to drop the check off and didn't even offer us a box. I had to get up and go to the sushi bar to ask for one. I really hope they train the wait staff or hire better ones as this place could be amazing if they do.

I stopped by for lunch and got a bento with tempura and teriyaki beef. It was tasty and a lot of food. The meal started witb miso, which was nice on a cold day. The tempura did have more batter then I would have liked, but it was very freshly fried. The steak was a decent portion and not overdone. Salad a tad over dressed for my liking but it was nice to have a fresh side.

We very much enjoyed our dinner there a few days ago. They did a nice job with the remodel that now includes a tv viewing bar area. Really though, it's about the food. We ordered the NY nigiri, tempura moriwase and chicken karaage. All were outstanding! Service was on par and we enjoyed watching the AI server bring out the beverages. A great Monday night!

Had a date night with my lovely girlfriend and I decided to give this place a shot. For starter the restaurant is very cute on the interior, definitely a good ambiance. We started our night with the spicy edamame & Wagyu Nigiri. The edamame was not spicy at all to be honest more so garlic flavor. I would have loved more spice and hotter in temp. As for the nigiri, they were well portioned slices with a beautiful sear. They were a bit too fatty for my liking but overall a tender and flavorful cut. Finished off with the beautiful Hinoka roll and it was definitely tasty. The mayo topping was a bit too much for me but the lemon definitely balanced out the roll. As for the service, not top tier to be honest we couldn't tell if a woman or man was our server. They were bouncing in and out from our table so it was hard to tell who was our actual server. Overall this was a nice venture but not sure on whether we would come out of our way another night.

I tried their sukiyaki set, both wagyu and seafood. I wish they had given some instructions on the approach or order I should eat the sets of food. It was a little chaotic trying to figure out how I could submerge all the ingredients in the broth so they would cook evenly. The tempura is perfectly crispy, but the rice was a little brittle and got dried really fast. The texture was more like Vietnamese broken rice, and it caught me off guard because when I tried their sushi a while ago, they used very high-quality rice. As is typical with sukiyaki, the broth becomes very flavorful at the end, absorbing all the flavors from high-quality ingredients, but my udon got a little dry while waiting. Since I tried both set, the wagyu sukiyaki broth became a little too sweet at the end. My favorite is definitely the seafood sukiyaki broth. Would I try these pricy sukiyaki again? Probably not. Would I go back to Azayaka again? 100%. This would not discourage me from going back there any amount.

I brought family in from the Bay Area to Chef Frank's, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance strikes that perfect balance--chill and casual, yet still elevated enough for a special occasion. We kicked things off with a mix of plain and spicy edamame, followed by two orders of my husband's favorite shrimp tempura and three orders of my go-to rainbow roll. Everything came out fresh and beautifully presented. A particularly special moment--my 88-year-old father made the trip to Sacramento after seven years (his first visit since my mom passed) and he truly enjoyed the beef/salmon bento box. That alone made the night meaningful. We also ordered additional specialty rolls with unagi and shrimp tempura for the non-celiac guests, and for our main event, the table indulged in three large sashimi platters. The fish was impeccably fresh, artfully arranged over ice--this is where they consistently shine. To top it all off, the birthday girls (my sister and my nephew's girlfriend) were treated to complimentary desserts--cheesecake and panna cotta--which was such a thoughtful touch. The ladies paired the evening with glasses of Cabernet, another personal favorite. Overall, it was a memorable night filled with great food, attentive service, and special family moments. *** Vegetarian Review ***…read more Would I come back? Yes, friendly service. They can accommodate their broths for vegetarians. If you can handle it, always ask for a medium spice level. Tips for first-timers: 1) Plenty of free parking 2) They accept reservations The Food: Vegetable Tempura ($18.95, Grade A): I like how they cut the vegetables--not too chunky. There is nothing worse than a chunky carrot that isn't cooked to its core. The tempura batter doesn't pull off when you bite into it, and it isn't oily at all. Yasai Ramen ($17.95, Grade A): Asked for a water broth to make this safe and vegetarian-friendly. You would think it would be tasteless, but it was surprisingly packed with flavor. The medium spice level definitely helped, but even for people sensitive to heat, this would be a tasty dish. It says water-based, but it still has a deep, eye-appealing dark color. The noodles have a great bite. Not overly mushy. And they stay that way for the entire meal. Broccoli, zucchini, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms, and cabbage. The cubed tofu is fresh and wasn't spoiled which often happens with tofu in restaurants that a lot of people don't order daily. Jungle Roll ($14.95, Grade A): Avocado and cucumber, topped with a seaweed salad. Most Japanese restaurants fail to understand that vegetarians also want a fun roll! We asked if they could include a vegetable tempura inside the roll so there would be a good textural component, and added a drizzle of teriyaki and spicy mayo. Good news--they were able to do it, though having to check with the sushi bar is always an adventure ($1 extra for each request). Sidenote: Why do all Japanese restaurants need to ask the sushi bar? One-hundred percent of the time, we eagerly have to wait for the sushi court to give a "rolling." (Ruling if that was too vague). The rolls are made fresh and many meat-based rolls include a tempura element rolled inside. I could understand if we're asking to deep fry the roll, but just adding a tempura and a drizzled sauce? Ok, hopping off my soapbox. Bottom Line We've been coming to this place on and off for over ten years. It's been at least 2 years since our last visit, and there are some noticeable changes. Portions are smaller; the ramen bowls used to be the size of a food challenge. The restaurant itself is looking older and not quite as cared for, but the flavors remain excellent and the friendly, attentive service is completely unchanged.

There's security cameras in this room. Go review the footage and you can see the proof that we all paid and the waitress took the trays." Apparently the security cameras weren't functioning as he wouldn't look at the footage. The manager wanted to charge the missing payment to the person who used a charge card for her payment and the group told him that was not acceptable. The dispute went on for 30 minutes and customers at a near by table kept turning around and looking at us. The manager stepped away again and returned shortly with the missing payment saying that he found it under the cash register! There was no true apology, no effort to compensate the group for the embarrassing behavior and accusations. Clearly it was the waitress' mistake and she didn't apologize to the group. This is unacceptable behavior from the manager. Knowing this happened yesterday, I will no longer dine at Akebono. Very poor customer service.

It's the kind of place that quietly becomes your favorite before you've even finished your first dish. ‍ Service That Feels Like Home From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm, enthusiastic "Irrashaimase!" The hostess was exceptionally engaging--personable without being overbearing--and guided us through the sake menu like a seasoned sommelier of umami. Her thoughtful recommendations led us to a beautiful tasting journey featuring three types of sake: * A classic hot sake for comfort, * A crisp cold sake imported from Japan, and * A smooth and unexpected bottle from Vernon, CA (yes, Vernon--who knew?). Although the tall glasses were emblazoned with Orion Beer branding, we stuck to the sake. No regrets. What We Ate -- A Love Letter to Flavor Every dish was visually stunning and bursting with freshness. Here's what we devoured: * Truffle Hamachi Carpaccio: Thin slices of hamachi bathed in a rich truffle soy, topped with microgreens and salmon roe. Silky, aromatic, and sublime. * Shishito Peppers: Perfectly blistered and dusted with spice. A simple dish that delivered big on smoky flavor. * Sake Nigiri & Tobiko Gunkan: The sake (salmon) nigiri was melt-in-your-mouth fresh, and the tobiko gunkan had just the right briny pop. Clean, classic, perfect. * Negihama Roll: Yellowtail and scallion in delicate harmony--refreshing and elegant. * Spicy Tuna Roll: A fiery flavor bomb, dusted generously with shichimi. Spicy but well-balanced. * Jade Roll: Wrapped in seaweed salad and sesame, this one was fresh, crunchy, and full of herbaceous notes. A standout roll. * Cucumber Sunomono: A palate cleanser and a beautiful contrast to the richness of the fish. Light, crunchy, and seasoned just right with sesame. Ambiance Kumi Sushi's atmosphere is refined but intimate--dim lighting, soft jazz playing in the background, and warm wood tones throughout. It's got date-night vibes without trying too hard. Final Verdict Kumi Sushi is everything you want in a neighborhood sushi spot--just elevated. Thoughtful service, stunning presentation, fresh ingredients, and a sake list that deserves its own night. Whether you're a seasoned sushi snob or just looking for a delicious evening out, this place delivers. 11/10 would truffle hamachi myself into oblivion again. Highly recommended.

We like to sit at the bar if there's just two of us, and will grab a table when we have friends. If you want to make sure you have a table, you can make a reservation ahead of time, but we usually don't need to wait too long. Our favorites are the brussel sprouts, karaage chicken, and their nigiri. We also really enjoy the sukiyaki, it's really flavorful and perfect for cooler or rainy weather. We still need to come by for brunch, but we've heard good things. The team here is always friendly, and we've been in enough that some of them recognize us now.

I will preface this by saying I should come back and judge based off their main menu offerings,…read morehowever they offer a separate brunch menu and that is what I had for my visit at fuji sac. We orderd the loco moco and breakfast fried rice with scrambled eggs. The eggs were deliciously scrambled. The fried rice was ok. The big concern was my burger patty was really burnt. The consistency and flavor of the gravy was interesting. We were the first visitors of the day so I'd say while it eventually filled up, not sure the reason behind burned food. Also, with a full bar, bloody marys were not available. Really unfortunate for brunches. However, I understand this is mainly a sushi joint? So maybe I will need to come back for sushi sometime.

I was referred to the owner Vinh who handled the situation with such care and understanding. He was extremely apologetic and offered to take care of the bill along with another generous offer. I was blown away by his generosity and consideration in wanting to make things right. I've always appreciated the fresh sushi, reasonable prices, & hospitality, but getting to interact with the owner and having that great of an experience really sealed the deal. Thank you again for excellent service. Please do yourself a favor and check out this wonderful restaurant. They will not disappoint! I typically order takeout but their dining room is very nice, clean and inviting. I would love to dine in next time.
