Some have pretty amazing stories to tell too, like your own walking talking version of Take A Break or Pick Me Up. There's nothing worse than being forced to talk to some bimbo about X-Factor while you're having your hair done or even worse (as once happened to me) getting some racist hairdresser who is complaining about all the asylum seekers 'taking our jobs'. Not wanting a gaping wound in your head you just have to keep schtum. Anyhow, SK109 offers the full range of services, wash, cut and blow dry, perms and colours and they're generally about £5-£10 cheaper than the High Street salons.

You sit listening to good music and they get you involved in whatever they're chatting about. They take their time to ask what you want and continue to ask if everything is alright as they cut. The graffiti style decor fits perfectly with its Stokes Croft location and you'll feel like you know the guys by the time you leave. Born out of the infamous Shambala festival, Shambarber brings a festival vibe to Stokes Croft in the way of mens and women's hair styling. The guys are involved in a number of club nights in and around bristol as well as Love Saves the Day festival and obviously, Shambala. They also hold invite only parties in the shop called 'The Barber Shop' that are absolutely amazing. Global DJ's playing to a crowd of 60. Festivals and music is their fun side - haircuts and beard trimming is their serious side; and they're blooming good at both!

Mary was my hairdresser and it's really her I'm giving 5* to! She knew exactly what I wanted, was friendly and chatty (without talking rubbish) and asked my opinion every step of the way. At £40, I'd happily pay it again for such a great cut. It's a little way out of town, but definitely worth it!

With that said, everything else I saw of the barber (e.g. the haircuts they were giving everyone else) suggested that they would have been able to deal with a more difficult assignment. The salon is clean and pretty sleek. There wasn't much of a wait when I went along and the staff were chatty without any air headed 'So you going somewhere hot this year?' you usually get. The prices are pretty good, especially considering the pricy surroundings. It annoys me that far too many barber shops seem to add loads of bells and whistle in order to justfy putting a couple more quid on the bill and thankfully this isn't the case here - you just get a decent hair cut but for a fair price.

The name 'Barbers' innitailly put me off as I assumed they only catered for men but this is not the case. In fact when I visited, there were far more females than males in there! The hairdressers are friendly and chatty but do not bombard you will questions which is nice! At only £17 for a cut and finish, it really is a bargin. I haven't however experienced what they are like with perming or colouring so I am reluctant to rate it too highly. They also don't take card payment so bare this in mind when visiting as there are no free ATMs locally. In general though I would recommened going here for your hair dressing needs.

Instead of going for coffee with Simon I ended up chatting to Peter Philippo, the owner of the salon, and so had a very pleasant time nevertheless. I listened with interest as he told me how much the new one way system that the council implemented about a year ago has negatively impacted the business. Sadly they have just had to let one stylist go as they are not receiving sufficient trade these days to warrant running the salon on the basis that they did prior to the new road layout. He also explained that the shop runs on a different basis to conventional barber shops. Everyone is self employed at Mode For Men instead of having employee status. Philippo explained that there were some real benefits to running things in this way. Not only does it mean that the stylists take more of a responsible approach to what they do, but it also means that they are their own boss, and can work in a way that suits them. I really enjoyed meeting Philippo, and can understand why this is such a popular little barbers shop. It's really well kitted out and the pricing is really reasonable. A cut and blow dry is £12.00, and a dry cut is £8.00. (Sometimes I wish I was a man! You would have to look pretty hard to find a women's salon offering the same for double the price!) They also offer significant discounts to school children and OAP's.

The reason being is this place has personality; it bubbles with Manly Bantering that seems out of place coming from the mouths of a hairdresser. There are caricatures of all the guys hanging from the walls, and you can really see that the three guys have their own unique styles. Happily, they don't seem to mind you having your own preferences, either. There seems to be very little ego in this place; it's just a great barbers to get a cut and dry done quickly and done well.
