The store has Chinese translations for most signage in and outside the store (It is in ChinaTown after all), but most of all provides a great range of beers, ciders, wines and spirits. The beverages in here are quite cheap, they always have a range that are stocked up in the aisle and presented with a great price. You can find a bottle of red or white for around %10, and usually have spirits 2 for $60. The staff are outstanding here, all very friendly and happy to help with any recommendations. Quite frequently there's a chipper young blonde behind the counter who has a laugh or two in her.

By god this place is great- it has a large stock of mainly excellent stock; being the majority is great stock without a lot of the so-so filler wines you get in most places. As they say, all killer no filler. Wine is mostly at the moderate to well price end- you can find most stock ranging between $20-40, and then of course you have your other higher and lower price brackets. What i can strongly suggest, after personal years in the hospitality trade, years of buying and tasting wine, is that you want to go with the aforementioned $20- $40 pricing range. Yes, you spent a little more money, but the qaulity is far superior, and of course, this will reflect in the product itself. You can knock someone's or even your own socks off with just about any bottle in this store as such, I would highly recommend some tight fitting socks! Pay attention all, this is wine, this is good wine, this is where it's at. Fresh, clean, spacious and modern layout, with products that excel. Not in the mood for wine? You will be! But if absconding from such excellent alcoholic grape products, they have here a great range of non-commercial (i can buy that anywhere) ciders, such as the Harcourt apple and pear ciders in that cute labels and packaging. Great boutique beers that you mostly can't find anywhere else; and again, this stuff is better drinking qaulity. Finally, Melbourne wine store is located in that cool little pocket, of St Kilda Road near Royce hotel, Cafe Vue and other rad businesses. This is on the outbound side, between Domain and Toorak roads, in that funny little patch of greatness, "the only part of st Kilda road that isn't daggy, dated, boring, run of the mill, nothing special, bland, boring, insipid and really crappy."

Though I used to be a regular, I've stopped going to Dan Murphy's recently. The reason is due to their inconsistency. As an exchange student, I rarely need to have my passport on me but too many times have I come to Dan's and had issues. I'll be in on a Monday and not even get id'd but come Tuesday, I come in with my mates and none of us can buy alcohol because I don't have a proper Id on me. This is the most ridiculous situation to be put in when shopping for grog so I've just stopped giving them my business. They've got a pretty fabulous selection though and even free tastings sometimes. Just be sure to bring your passport with you if you're an international to ensure no hassles.

The staff wasn't especially helpful, and I went ignored the entire time I was in here. They had all the flavors of Bundeburg Rum, as well as American liquors. It's just that the prices seemed astronomical for what they were selling here. I found better places to get beers along the way.

They sell lots of booze too. They outfitted me with a paper bag each time I came in, and assured me that wouldn't be a problem out in the square. The clerk was friendly and made recommendations on what I should be drinking to get the true Chinatown Australian experience. (It involved lots of beer.) They sell everything from cheap-o beer to really high end Chinese liquors. There are wide varieties in gins and vodkas. The prices on the individual beers sure beat those in the bars, and it was great to try the Melbourne and the Victoria Bitters beers, in an authentic setting, right down from Parliament in the heart of Chinatown.
