The marker is along US-21 and there is room to stop to read it. The marker reads, "At this site on August 18, 1780 General Thomas Sumter camped with captured booty and 800 men. He was surprised and defeated by Lt. Col. Tarleton and 160 soldiers. The disaster followed only two days General Gate's defeat by Lord Cornwallis at Camden. The patriots lost 150 men killed and many captured, but Sumter escaped and soon rallied another large force." It is marker number 12-3 and it was erected in 1974 by the Chester County Historical Society. Sumter's men had halted to rest after days of marching in brutal summer heat, unaware that Tarleton had crossed the Catawba River and was closing in on their position. Tarleton launched a surprise attack while the Americans were scattered, many bathing, sleeping, or tending to captured supplies, and the result was a swift and overwhelming British victory. More than half of Sumter's force was killed or captured, though Sumter himself narrowly escaped the chaos. The defeat temporarily halted his campaign against British outposts and further strengthened Tarleton's reputation as Cornwallis's most aggressive field commander. Very cool urban "archaeological" find...nobody but locals "in the know" seem to be aware it's even…read morethere! Found out about it from the very nice & informative bartender at Dust Off Brewing (check out doing to the YoCo Brew Trail; check into 6 breweries on the app & get a t-shirt). He couldn't quite remember how to get to it, but after some intensive research, found the geo coordinates. That was honestly the only way to find this place, plus a little guts & guesswork. You can quasi see some portion of the rockwork of the ruinous remains from the paved Riverwalk trail. The "easiest" way to get to the ruins is to follow the Riverwalk Piedmont Medical Center Trail to just before mile marker 1.25; you will see this steep wooden thing with awkwardly placed planks. You basically have to rock-wall climb your way up. From there you are on a mountain biking trail. Follow the arrows for just over a quarter mile and you will see some indicators of the ruins before they open up in front of you. You will most likely have the place to yourself. Really cool to wander around and take it all in. Just be careful with holes and don't walk on or within the actual ruins as they are pretty sketch & unsteady. There are spiders, snakes, and flying insects galore, so put on repellent and stay vigilant cuz it is deep woods! You can either get back down the way you came; I found this gray rock slope that I found easier to navigate than sliding down the wood thing I climbed up. Either way, really neat find and I'm so glad I explored to find it! The paved walkway along the Catawba is also a nice walk to and from!

At the corner of Caldwell Street and East Main Street in downtown Rock Hill, this building is hard…read moreto miss. As is the historic marker located in front. On the one side, it reads "This building was described as "handsome in every respect" when it opened in 1932. It replaced a 1906 post office and housed a new district court and federal offices. It served as a post office until 1986 and provided offices and headquarters for several U.S. Congressmen, including Thomas S. Gettys 1965-75. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, it was renamed in honor of Gettys in 1997." On the other side, "This six-story structure was Rock Hill's first high-rise office building. Built in 1924-25, it opened in 1926 with Citizens Bank & Trust on the 1st floor. The bank closed in 1927. Rock Hill National Bank opened on the 1st floor in 1941 and remained here until 1976. WRHI Radio, one of S.C.'s earliest stations, signed-on with studios on the 2nd floor in 1944 and broadcast from here until 1977. Civil defense used an observation deck on the roof during World War II. [Erected by the Culture & Heritage Museums of York County and the City of Rick Hill, 2007." On the East (front) side: Worthy, the Confederate soldier to be hallowed and held in tender remembrance Worthy, the fadeless fame which Lancaster's soldiers won in defending the honor of the South, the rights of the States, the liberties of the people, the sentiments of the South, the principles of the Union, as they were handed down to them by the fathers of our common country. Our Confederate Soldiers On the South side: "God holds the scales of justice; he will measure praise and blame; and the South will stand the verdict and will stand it without shame." It was erected 1909 by the Lancaster Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. I'm not going to take sides, I'm only pointing out that it's here. Read…read moreRoad extends though some of the most established and high end parts of South Charlotte from where it becomes Colony Road in the Old Providence neighborhood and extending past the massive Calvary Church and Piper Glen before it continues through Blakely and becomes Marcin School Road. Isaac Grier was born in 1776 and arrived in the Charlotte area in 1804 to serve the Sardis and Providence Associate Reformed Presbyterian churches. In 1808 he married Isabella Harris of the Steele Creek community. Soon afterward he purchased roughly 102 acres along what is now Rea Road and built the Federal‑style house that survives today as the Grier‑Rea House, located near Providence Road. The home was positioned between the two churches he served, and it became the center of a growing farm that expanded to nearly 400 acres by the 1840s. The property was worked by enslaved laborers; the 1820 census recorded seven enslaved people, and his 1843 will bequeathed more than a dozen to family members. The Grier‑Rea House itself carries its own historical recognition. A state marker notes that it was built around 1815 by Isaac and Isabella Grier and later purchased by the Rea family in 1872. It stands today as one of the oldest surviving structures in the Providence corridor and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Grier died in 1843 and is buried at Sardis Presbyterian Church. His tombstone describes him as a faithful minister who served the united congregations of Sardis and Steele Creek from 1804 until shortly before his death. His son, Robert Calvin Grier, inherited the homestead and followed him into the ministry, eventually becoming president of Erskine College. Secretary of Agriculture and later of the Treasury under Wilson. College president and author. His birthplace stood 60 yards north." Online, there is more information. "Author, university administrator, U.S. cabinet official, and businessman David Franklin Houston had his beginnings in Union County. Houston was born in Monroe on February 17, 1866, the youngest child of William Henry and Cornelia Anne Stevens Houston. His family left North Carolina for Darlington, South Carolina, in 1872. He graduated from the College of South Carolina in 1887 and after a year of graduate school, served as superintendent of public schools in Spartanburg, South Carolina. From there he went on to receive a Masters of Arts from Harvard University in 1892." "Woodrow Wilson appointed Houston to the post of Secretary of Agriculture in 1913. The legacy he created while serving in that position derived from his work to change the department of agriculture's emphasis on bolstering production to one of improving marketing, prices, and distribution of products. He served as Secretary of the Treasury from February 1920 to March 1921 and then was elected chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. In 1924 he was mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate; however, Houston was ready to end his political career." "Out of politics Houston stayed involved in the corporate world and in education. He was president of Bell Telephone Securities Company and financial vice-president of American Telephone & Telegraph Company from 1921 to 1927. From 1927 to 1940 he was president of Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York. Meanwhile he served as a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard and as a trustee of Columbia University. Democrats favored Andrew Jackson, Whigs leaned toward Henry Clay, and so they settled on 'Union' to reflect cooperation. Two years later, Monroe was incorporated as the county seat and named in honor of President James Monroe. The historic courthouse, completed in 1886, is a fine example of Late Victorian civic architecture. Its symmetrical two-story brick façade features a five-bay central block flanked by two-bay wings, all topped by a low hip roof and a commanding cupola that still defines the skyline of downtown Monroe. In 1922, two three-bay wings were added to the north and south, carefully designed to preserve the building's original balance and style. More than just a handsome structure, the courthouse has stood witness to pivotal chapters in Union County's story from Reconstruction-era governance to civil rights-era legal battles. Del Webb library is cozy and quaint, in other words, it's small but the librarians give their heart…read moreand soul into their work. You can see the passion they have for this library and the many patron who come here. When you're here it seems like a vestige back in time, no it's not modern, no there's not a big selection of books but it suits the patrons who tend to be seniors. Del Webb library is located near Sun City in Indian Land, which makes sense. There is a nice adult section, history section, young adult and children's section. Another thing I love about this library is you can purchase gently used books that others have donated. The price range is 25 cents to 4 dollars. If you take the time to browse, you'll likely find a great book to add to your collection. Also if there's a book you're looking for and they don't have it, they'll order from Amazon for you. Again, the staff here is wonderful and they more than make up for any short comings there may be.

Very nice library, the building is new, big, like the shopping center where it's situated. It has…read moreample parking, it's big inside, it has all you need, a great selection of books, movies on DVD-s, computers. It's quiet, clean, well organized. I love the small bookstore located inside, they sell gently used books, various genres, in good shape, prices are cheap. You can find a great bargain in here. I also like the Indian hand made baskets and pottery they have on display, great little exhibit. If you're in the area and you love books and movies, this is a great place, worth checking out.
