As a family, a parent (or grandparent, guardian, etc) contributes time on one school day a month in your child's classroom and devotes at least two hours of time to the annual May Fair fund raiser. The result is a great family vibe that is a socially nurturing environment within a solid academic curriculum. My oldest (the only one in elementary school at this point) was super well-prepared, socially and academically, to enter kindergarten. Impressive for a half-day program. The session is chock full of good learning for these kids. I have my second child finishing up the four year old program here in May and my youngest entering the three year old program in the fall. I almost wish that I had more children just so I could hang out here more than the two years I have ahead. Yeah...I love it that much.

My partner…read moreand I had some significant concerns and we sat down two days ago with the director and assistant director, who are mother and daughter. We were concerned about Natalia obsessively singing patriotic songs and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. She came home a few days ago and said very sternly that the assistant director told the kids to tell their parents that they need to stand for the national anthem during the Super Bowl. Of course we told her that that is not true, and tried to discuss that this is a complicated issue and that people have different opinions. We tried to have a calm and rational discussion with the administrators. We explained that when we were in high school we made the choice to not stand for the national anthem. I said that we support people's right to not stand during the national anthem to protest police brutality against people of color and stated we support Black Lives Matter. The assistant director stated that they are training the children to say the Pledge of Allegiance and stand for the national anthem because they will be expected to do this in elementary school. I said that my daughter never has to stand for the national anthem. The director told us we were "making her blood boil and her blood pressure go up," and told us we were not welcome at her school if we did not share her values. She walked out while I was still talking. Also, when we arrive for the meeting there was one staff in charge of 16 preschool students. That is not the appropriate ratio. I observed several kids playing roughly and intervened so that no one would get hurt. The staff was in the other room and did not see what was going on. I also expressed concern about high staff turnover and the assistant director kept insisting it was due to two or three problematic children (whom she identified by name) in my daughter's class. I stated that I had personally observed the administration being harsh and punitive with staff and that is likely the reason for turnover. I stated that this was an issue when Natalia was in a class without those "problem students." We also expressed concern about staff speaking harshly to several students and being completely rigid and inflexible with parents, staff, and students.

first public school in the united states. in dorchester, ma the first…read morepublic elementary school in the united states is the mather school. it is located at meeting house hill. there are (2) schools at this location, along with the first church, and i believe the first fire station. i think the older school was named edward southworth school. i attended this school with the hardwood floors, and. giant wooden doors. i hope this school still excists with the shining, but worn down paths in the floors. it should remain as a museum. the church has been burned once to the ground and again just partially burnt. it has always been restored back to its original structure. if you are ever in the neighborhood take the time to see the beautiful history there. another thing swing by and see the strand theatre that at one time it was restored to its original state. this theatre was elligant to the likes of lauren becall and humphrey bogart.

I am quite sure that in April of 1968 there were no African-American children in my school. I had just turned 10 when Martin Luther King Jr. was killed, but I do not remember hearing his name before that day in April when our principal, Everett J. Hopkins, called the entire school on to the front lawn to explain the significance of who this man was, and the tragedy that had transpired. Somewhat numbed by the killing of JFK, and after much chest beating and hair pulling from our senior family members and friends over that event, with the Vietnam War beating a steady drumbeat in the background, it seemed a nice spring day to be outside of the tar-dripping asbestos tiled ceilings of Hamilton Elementary School, and really: what choice did we have? Mr. Hopkins, a direct descendant of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a watercress farmer, baker and educator, so much wanted us to know, boys and girls on the lawn, what we had lost. He wanted us to know, so much, that he broke down in tears, and could not finish what he wanted to say. So we were left with this: we still did not know what a black person was, what freedom they might have been denied: but it was enough. Whoever MLK Jr. was, and whoever took his life, whatever impact it might have had on the world.....his brutal passing had made our kind and gentle leader cry. He tried so hard, Everett J. Hopkins, to explain to us. He stood handsome and proud, and he probably felt he was not really up to the task as he dissolved into tears. But I know that I am not the only child from that horrible spring day on the lawn of Hamilton Elementary School who remembers, and so: a big thank you to the global thinking members of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, to Everett J. Hopkins and to Hamilton Elementary School, for teaching us about the world beyond.

Two of my children ahve attended Ponaganset High School. One is a graduate and is now in college,…read moreand one is a current student. I'm very happy overall with their education and experience at PHS. This school does a great job with the many CTE pathway programs, and students have the opportunity to earn real certifications such as CPR and OSHA while still in high school. The school facility is far better than many other high schools in Rhode Island with up to date classroom technology and clean hallways, classrooms, and bathrooms. The grounds are expansive with wooded cross country running paths and beautiful soccer, football, and baseball fields. The tennis courts have lights and all of the athletic areas are well maintained. I feel that for the most part, my children have received a good education here. As in any public school, some teachers are better than others, but for the most part I've found the teachers to be competent, dedicated, and they have good relationships with their students. My college age child was well prepared for university classes and had the opportunity to earn college credits credits through AP and EEP classes. The Music Department at PHS is a strong point of the school. Both the chorus and the instrumental program are outstanding and the students perform at very high levels. The students in the music program have the opportunity to audition for All State, and they also are able to participate in the yearly music department trip. Students in the music program develop a close bond with their classmates, and many great memories are made through the events and concerts they participate in. The music department teachers are amazing and are som eof the best teachers in the school. My only criticism of Ponaganset High School is with the AP classes. In my children's experiences, there isn't much accountability for the teachers of AP classes to truly teach the AP curriculum. In several of their AP classes, the content has not been fully covered. I wish the administration would put more time into monitoring the instruction in these classes to make sure the curriculum is covered, but that is the only downside I've seen, so I would definitely recommend Ponaganset High School.
