This review is hard to make but I have to tell the truth about this place: hands down they have the best fried fish I have ever had in this area and the mac & cheese tasted great, as well as the chicken wings - very good. OH and the Lemon Cake, Absolutely Fantastic. BUT they need to be more clean as someone else said, "we not only eat with our mouths but with our eyes too". I saw something unclean and spoke on it right away, right there, but in private with one of the workers, and said coworker took care of it right away. However, before speaking up, I paused thinking maybe I should just leave instead. What made me change my mind was during the conversation with the worker, she was definitely concerned and after, she immediately took care of the issue. Another fault is the condition of the restaurant for dining-in is NOT appealing either. So we got our food to go! If their food was horrible or plainly average, believe me, I would not give them 4 stars but it's the exact opposite, just don't sit down or stay too long bc you might pass out from the heat as they have no a.c.! This place needs to be on Diners Drives and Dives!! EVERYTHING is amazing. They are legit with their seasonings! I highly recommend the tuna melt on whole wheat bread, like best tuna ever. Their mac & cheese has great texture and deep flavors. Also, the whiting, the wings, the steamed cabbage, THE SALMON CAKES! YUUM! Everything I have tasted I love & the prices are the best. Good food but ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! And for that reason I will never come back. I gave them another chance after my last experience where they didn't have mac and cheese ready so I ordered macaroni salad instead. After waiting 40 minutes I saw where they had just brought out a fresh pan of mac and cheese and asked if I could change the macaroni salad I originally ordered (and really didnt want) for the mac and cheese especially considering they put my cold salad with my hot food. I was rudely told no I could not change my order and if I wanted my cold salad to be separate from my hot food I would have had to request it. I walked out. Fast forward to today. I came in and waited 10 minutes for 1 side order of premade potato salad. The order was $3.62 (random pricing) and gave them $20.00. I was charged $4.00 because I was advised "we don't have any change". They are making a killing if they do this to everyone that walks in the door. Never again. Ordered from here today for lunch. Not quite pleased. The jerk chicken came as a leg quarter it wasn't chopped up. Although it is seasoned well, there are some dried parts (tough) and no jerk bbq sauce or anything. The Mac n cheese didn't give the wow effect I was hoping for. Once the jerk chicken is chopped up to serve and the Mac has some more cheese or something (not sure what's missing) this is best review I can give. Hope that helps. read more

I'm so disappointed in this establishment. I thought things would change and they did. I been to the establishment a few different times and it's always dirty! The meat cutter was filthy! The frying area looked disgusting! The customer service is horrible. They answer the phone " yea what you need?" .. umm what I need is for you to answer the phone like it's a business! Absolutely terrible and a major turn off. The Mac and cheese taste like it was made with cheap products and it's very oily! Very good soul food place in a neighborhood devoid of restaurants of any kind. The hood really needs to come up, but this place is a nice start. It's a divey, take out place. A friend of mine has been a customer for a few yrs now and always talks about this take out place. So I finally stopped here to have breakfast and was I blown outta my socks. I tried the chicken and waffles. The waffle is definitely from a homemade recipe, it was fluffy with a slight crisp and hint of butter. The wings were out of this world, I had to place an order of wings and whiting to go just so I can bring back to my family. The wings were seasoned to the bone and fried just right. I'm a wing connoisseur and this place definitely earned their stripes. Most ppl in the area go to Ambassadors for wings. Wait until they get a hold of this place. I couldn't find an ounce of "soul" in their Soulfood. Something about it was very OFF. My salmon cakes tasted like old oil. Who ever made that mac n cheese should be arrested. Two weeks ago my friend bought fried chicken and mac and cheese from here, it was delicious. I've had fried chicken from here before, but it was just okay, it was cooked too dark or maybe the oil hadn't been changed. Two weeks ago though, the chicken was a nice golden color and seasoned really well. I hope the next time I get fried chicken, mac and cheese, it will be just as good. read more

Natural Start started out ok however the small amount of success has drastically caused them to change their attitudes! The staff is rude mean and nasty to people for absolutley no reason at all. They don't know how to talk to people and they are basically disrespecting the main people that's actually trying to support them. As a college Educated Black man and Business owner myself I know the power of my hard earned green dollars. We work to hard for our money to go spend it where your own people have little or no respect for you. "NATURAL START" is not the chicken place around. After my experience I was so applauded I shared my experience with a few others only to find out they to had similar experiences and even described some of the staff to a tee. Wake up people I walked out of the store! Their is nothing in that store that I want to eat that much that I'm willing to give up my dignity and respect for. Food is always on point but the older woman who takes the orders has a bit of an attitude problem

I'm here every weekend. The cornbread is absolutely amazing. The only down side to natural start is that they only serve cornbread on Sundays and you can't buy extra sides of it. The greens are always perfect not a lot of salt and never gritty. The Mac and cheese is also great. On 3 occasions I have ordered a pan of 50-60 fried wings and they have always been a hit at events. The prices are also the same as ambassadors chicken for wings. The owners two daughters are so friendly and I'm so happy and proud to support this black owned business. Please check them out just don't take all the cornbread before I get there. read more

Do not eat their salad! The croutons taste like they are 8 years old. Only one person fries the best chicken so you have to catch them on their good days because they taste like they were overly greasing and sitting out. Their macaroni salad is disgusting and so is their potatoes and fried onions and peppers. Be careful using their condiments. read more
