We loved doing temple work inside this beautiful. This was our third time to visit the temple. I suspect that most people visit Nauvoo for the historical sites, including the reconstructed temple. Still, I would highly recommend a visit. In the 1840s, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (called Mormons, in derision) built a place "for the Most High to dwell." The temple was an invitation for God to reside among them and, therefore, required considerable effort, care, and sacrifice. After the untimely deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith (their religious leaders), many church members left Nauvoo and migrated to the Utah Territory, and the temple fell into disuse; a tornado destroyed the building in 1850. In the 1990s, church leaders decided to reconstruct the Nauvoo Temple, with some interior modifications to accommodate modern temple ceremonies. Given the private nature of these ceremonies, only church members can enter the building today. However, the grounds are open to the public. For those interested, the nearby visitors' center contains a detailed model of the interior. read more

This place is seriously amazing. The landscape is beautiful and tranquil. I watched the sunset on the Mississippi River, it was peaceful and a wonderful end to a great day of visiting the different historical sites. The area is owned by both the Community of Christ and the LDS church. First off, the temple is spectacular as it overlooks the city and the river. Visitors are welcome to walk outside and take pictures. The inside of the temple is reserved for their members doing sacred work. The different houses offers a glimpse to an era where everything was simple yet often times difficult for the mormon pioneers. I truly enjoyed the historical presentations from the many missionaries in each of the buildings. We went on a wagon ride that took us all over town. The missionary driving the wagon offered a very good summary of all the different buildings in this area. If you don't have much time in Nauvoo, I suggest getting tickets to the horse drawn wagon ride. We also went to the blacksmith, the brickyard, and the gunsmiths houses. You get a wonderful souvenir at the blacksmith and the brickyard. The brick that you get for free here is offered for $5 at the gift-shop in town. We also attended a musical presentation that was held right next to the LDS visitor center after all the houses were closed. The presentation was performed by Nauvoo musical missionaries and the senior missionaries in the area. It was very nice and a good end to a perfect day (bring some bugs spray though). I had not been to Nauvoo for ten years and forgot how much I love it. We took our four teenagers and my wife and I attended the Temple, we spent two full days enjoying Nauvoo. The Temple is truly beautiful. read more

First of all, this building is sooooo beautiful- inside and out! It's positioned perfectly up on the hill and can be seen from miles and miles around. They say you need to call and get a reservation, but I think that's only for the busy season. I went the 3rd week in August, after most of the tourists were gone. We didn't make any reservations, but just showed up. There was totally room for us in the session. However, we had a hard time figuring out how to get into the temple. First, you have to park across the street, (just follow the signs). But there were no crosswalks to get across Mulholland to the temple. BE PREPARED TO JAYWALK! :-D We wondered if there might be an annex building to enter much like the SLC temple. Nope! You just walk right in the front doors! Easy as pie! Wonderful temple! read more

You can't enter this building unless you are Mormon. I offer this as my opening sentence because it's not exactly clear on the exterior of the building whether anyone can enter or not. Maybe it was naive of me to think anyone could enter into the temple. It creates an interesting dichotomy considering Mormons routinely send their youthful emissaries to enter other people's homes. That said, it is a beautiful building from the outside decorated with a sun and moon motif. Being a recreation of the original, it does have a contemporary feel. read more
