It's a small base but has all the necessary support services like NEX, commissary, and gym one could ask for. The on-base NGIS is excellent, and the hotel staff is friendly. One of the coolest things about its location is its proximity to Boston. Boston is a short drive North, about 1.5 hours. How can you review a Navy base? They are what they are and that's that! This location is very small as far as bases go - but it has the basics. Exchange, commissary, barber, Navy Federal CU, Uniform shop, admin basics, MWR, bowling ally, starbucks, etc... it also has the Naval War College, a nice O'Club, marina, and BRAND SPANKIN" NEW GYM! Seriously the gym was probably my favorite part because it is a 40 ish million dollar facility with great views of the Narragansett! I'm not even a gym junkie! This base supports some fine Navy schools, including Naval War College, Naval Justice School, Naval Chaplins School Command, and other fleet support schools. A decent sized Navy Exchange and Commissary support the command and local active and retired military. An NEX service station is available for authorized patrons. The Chapel of Hope offers Protestant and Catholic services on Sunday morning, as well as other activities during the week. MWR activities include the Seaview Lane Bowling Center, Pool 307 and the Auto Skill Center, as well as the Single Sailor Program and Liberty Center, Internet Cafe, as well as the Officer's, Enlisted and CPO clubs. Outdoor Recreation Rental completes the MWR activities with equipment for sporting, camping and party rentals. Included are canoes and kayaks, as well as lawn and garden equipment. The Navy Sailing Center & Marina provides boat berthing, sailing and power boat training, boats and kayak rentals. Also available is the Veterinarian Clinic available for routine immunizations and diagnostic tests for dogs, cats and other small animals. Naval Station Newport, RI is home to Officer Candidate School, Surface Warfare Officer School, Supply Corps School, and a bunch of other schools as well. The area is very good for boating, sailing, and retiring. The surrounding area doesn't have too much else to do. On base, you have an O club, commissary, NEX, uniform shop, and many more. This review is only for the Officers' Club at Naval Station Newport in relation to our wedding. While the view of the Newport Bridge from the Officers' Club and location of the venue are second-to-none in the area, the customer service and professionalism of the staff of the Officers' Club and MWR was, quite frankly, abysmal. I did not feel like our once-in-a-lifetime event mattered to them beyond the money they made off our wedding. I was not impressed with the level of attentiveness (or, in this case, inattentiveness) to detail or our event in general, but the guests all had a good time and enjoyed the food. Pros: - We were satisfied with the food and level of service we received from the waitstaff at both our rehearsal dinner (held on-site) and the reception. Keith, the head waiter, was courteous, on top of things, and friendly, which we really appreciated. We also had many complicated food allergies and restrictions that the Officers' Club seamlessly accommodated. - The ceremony and reception ran smoothly, but only because our personal day-of coordinator (a friend of ours) basically had to take over running the event and I had created a detailed day-of timeline on my own that all of our external vendors relied upon. Cons: - Our point of contact changed 3 times over the 15 months of planning our wedding with the venue, and every single one of them were disorganized and slow to respond to our e-mails or phone calls. The sales manager who we initially dealt with was downright rude and unfriendly (and that's putting it nicely). She also led us to believe that we would get to try every type of food they offered at their once-a-year tasting, as they would not let us try the food before signing the contract; we were disappointed that only a small subset of all entree, appetizer, and dessert choices were available at the tasting. There were also multiple miscommunications with the venue that day. - 2 days before the wedding, the venue coordinator called to say that not only would she not be at our rehearsal dinner or wedding due to a family emergency, but 3 of our foreign guests had been denied (one of whom had just flown into Newport from Scotland that morning) after telling us the week prior that all foreign guests had been approved by base security. This caused major frustration and consternation for my husband, who was beside himself that his dear friend could not attend our wedding, after spending time and money to travel thousands of miles to be there for our big day. - No one greeted us on the day of our rehearsal, so we had to run the rehearsal ourselves and figure out many solutions for our questions on our own. - The venue's day-of coordinator left me with the impression that she hadn't done many events at the Officers' Club previously and was not very attentive. She didn't know how to turn on the AC in my bridal room, she didn't deliver the water and fruit and cheese plate to our bridal room until we'd already asked multiple times, and we had to approach her during the reception to ask that she make the reception room cooler, as guests were complaining to us about the temperature in the room. read more

Great base. Of course only open to employees of the base, DOD personal, and government contractors. The bowling alley is great, the people at the commissary are friendly and helpful and the museum has a great pieces of history and learning. read more

Typical Navy base. Always under construction and sometimes with only one gate guard. The buildings are nice and driving along the water can be calming after a long day of work. But constant rerouting, congested 4-way intersections, and tight roads make driving on and being on base just another average Navy day. read more

I can't say enough great things about this Naval Base. It's where I started my military career...20 years ago! This is where I go for medical, dental, commissary, Exchange, and uniform needs. The gym on base is large and currently being renovated. BOQ/BEQ rooms are available for dirt cheap rates for those military members passing through the area and looking for cheap lodging. The Base is only a few miles from the Newport waterfront where you will find great restaurants, bars, big yachts, mansions, the famed cliff walk, and beautiful scenery. It's a great place to be stationed. read more

Being the small Navy base that it is, it's not bad at all. The lodging is pretty good, the galley is decent, and the Navy Exchange has the basics one needs. The Marina is AMAZING and the gym, while great, however the hours open could be improved upon (leave it open longer!) read more
