    Sunset over the Narragansett

How can you review a Navy base? They are what they are and that's that! This location is very small as far as bases go - but it has the basics. Exchange, commissary, barber, Navy Federal CU, Uniform shop, admin basics, MWR, bowling ally, starbucks, etc... it also has the Naval War College, a nice O'Club, marina, and BRAND SPANKIN" NEW GYM! Seriously the gym was probably my favorite part because it is a 40 ish million dollar facility with great views of the Narragansett! I'm not even a gym junkie! If you have an opportunity to get on base, check out the war college museum!

Mesmerizing view from the newly constructed Navy Gateway Inns & Suites

This Naval bass offers many beautiful views from various vantage points. It has a large fitness center with heavy duty equipment, newly renovated and newly constructed hotels ran by well-trained staff. It's easy to get around and most buildings are off of one main road.

Very nice installation. A lot of services offered. I would definitely recommend the base gym.

The city was incorporated in 1784 and incorporated as a town in 1639. There are approximately 25,000 residents. It's a tourist hot spot in the summer because of the historic mansions, beautiful vista, and sailing. No wonder why the wealthy built mansions and spent their summers there during the 20th century. A notable landmark is the Newport bridge, which connects the city with neighboring towns and cities. The city also has one of the highest amount of colonial homes in the nation; if you're a history lover like me, that's pretty cool. A couple of popular events include the St. Patrick's parade and Newport Folk Festival; always a fun time at those events. Cliffwalk is a 3.5-mile trail along the shoreline. Overall, a historic and beautiful city, it's a must see in the summer; put your walking shoes on and just explore the city.

Visiting the mansions is a *must* do when visiting. But there is also a lot of history in Newport. Did you know Newport had the first gas street lights in the country? Lots of amazing old buildings. The stone tower that no one can agree on. The atheneum. Tennis museum. Car museum. Church where JFK and JBKO wed. All the stuff. So whether you are a foodie, history buff, shopper or thalassophile Newport may scratch your itch. Check it out.

Ahh, the City by the Sea…read more Did you know that Newport now contains among the highest number of surviving colonial buildings of any city in the United States? Me either but it's true. Did you know that Newport is the home of Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport which houses the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center? Now you do. Did you know the Tennis Hall of Fame is located in Newport? How about that the Newport Country Club hosted the first US Open and the first US Amateur? Or that Newport is known as the sailing capitol of the United States? Or that John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier were married in St. Mary's Church in Newport? Or that the movie "The Great Gatsby" (1974 edition) was filmed in Newport? Or that on Bellevue Avenue is home to some of the most opulent, amazing mansions in the world? Or that The Whitehorse Tavern, the oldest pub in continuous service in the United States, can be found here? All of this and I have not even begun to mention the beaches, the great restaurants, the Newport Jazz Festival, the fun - and there is a lot of fun to be had in Newport. A great place to visit if you get a chance.
