I have been a customer of NBT Bank for over 70 years, and I have never been more disappointed with the way I have been treated over the past several years. I am an elderly, disabled customer, and instead of feeling like my bank is looking out for me, I feel like I am constantly fighting just to access my own money. For years, my account has been the victim of fraudulent charges, with thousands of dollars being taken from my account, yet no one from the bank ever contacted me to ask if those transactions were legitimate. I never received a phone call, a letter, or any kind of warning that my account was being overdrawn because of suspicious activity. Anyone who knows my spending habits would know that those charges were completely out of character, yet the bank allowed them to continue without question. At the same time, when I made a legitimate purchase for only a few dollars at Dunkin', the bank called me, and because I did not answer within minutes, they immediately canceled my debit card before the weekend. That left me without access to my own money until I could get back to the bank for another replacement card. This same situation has happened over and over again for years. Most recently, my card was blocked because the bank questioned my spending habits. Because of my age and disability, I am unable to go grocery shopping myself, so I rely on Walmart and Price Chopper deliveries through DoorDash. Every single one of those purchases was made by me, yet my card was still blocked. I explained that those charges were mine, but I was told I had to wait while they investigated. A week turned into two weeks, and I still could not use my debit card or access my own money. During that time, I was unable to pay bills or purchase necessities because the bank was effectively holding my money. To make matters even worse, my debit card was destroyed, and I was not given a replacement. After more than 70 years of loyalty to this bank, I never imagined I would be treated this way. I expected my bank to communicate with me when suspicious activity occurred, protect me from fraud, and help me when problems arose. Instead, I have dealt with poor communication, repeated inconveniences, unnecessary stress, and a complete lack of consideration for an elderly customer who simply wants reliable access to his own money. NBT Bank is a very poor financial institution. I have a solar panel loan with them and have tried multiple times to set up automatic monthly payments. I have submitted the required form four times to update my payment information. If I do not use automatic payments, they charge an additional $20 fee, yet no one has been able to help me resolve this issue. Horrible experience...After the bank I was with for several yrs sold out to NBT, ... NBT would not let me close my acct after i kept trying to get into my acct to pay some pending bills on line. I went to close the acct and they would not let me and talked me out of it after seeing all my idenification and proof of acct with previous bank for many yrs. After returning home and paying bills on line, they called me couple hrs later saying they now needed NOW copies of my ID and when would come back, needed right away. Since i told them i was unable to come back then, they told me to take copy of my license and email to them, which i later found out not recommended to send over the internet because identity could be stolen and used. They had already seen my license, and had my banking from the original bank i was with for yrs but were threatening to freeze my acct.?? I did once again go back that day and again show all my Identification once again. After all this and paying a few bills on line they froze my account so any biils paid on line were returned to me unpaid to companies. NOW i am getting letters from Fiserv, collection and utility companies telling me I need to pay in cash. My acct has more than enough funds. This incompetent bank is ruining my credit just within a only a month after the transfer into this night mare bank experience. Wish I had read all the reviews before. I've held accounts with NBT Bank and its predecessors for five decades. While I've had excellent service with them on the domestic side, it has been 180 degrees opposite on anything international. Despite notifying the bank in advance, both online and in person, of upcoming foreign travel, the bank has consistently frozen my accounts once I was traveling abroad, rendering both my debit card and access to my accounts unusable. This has occurred several times. I lodged a formal complaint with a regional NBT president, who took my complaint seriously and subsequently informed me that NBT had reformed its system. Well, I went through the same motions for my latest foreign trip and guess what? Locked out of my accounts, requiring a 45-minute phone call from overseas to reverse it. Having zero trust in NBT's competence in this area, I now use another bank that caters to military personnel and retirees whenever I travel outside the country. I also use this bank when wiring money abroad due to NBT's excessive fees and slow processing. Bottom line: if you never leave the country and engage solely in domestic financial transactions, NBT is fine. If not, take your business elsewhere. read more

STAY AWAY. My wife and I banked with NBT for 8 years despite the multiple perks and benefits of a relationship with a larger entity like BOA. We paid off one mortgage during this time and the bulk of another one. I believed the conventional wisdom that a personal relationship with local bankers would be helpful to our long term financial goals. We recently tried to roll over my wife's retirement assets to a different vehicle, with input from our financial advisor, accountant, benefit plan administrators and IRA custodian. A business checking account was required with some parameters specific to the nature of the transaction. All requested documents were provided, including those prepared by an attorney and signed off by the institutional custodian's compliance department. Clinton branch manager Lori Alderwick (NMLS 997422) had no clue what we were trying to accomplish and treated my wife like a criminal, instead of as someone who has consulted with multiple experts and followed all of the transactional rules. Lori refused to contact any of the more knowledgeable fiduciaries we referred her to (to their shock), and after weeks left us a voicemail stating she was refusing to open the required account. A lazy, zero class move from a bush league, zero class outfit. Fortunately, we found another bank that was more than willing to work with us. NBT is where to go if you feel the need to be cheated on a HELOC or something. It's not a serious bank for serious people. If the sizable business I offered was rebuffed by these local yokels, it's likely yours will be too. Stay far away, and if you're already a customer run - don't walk - while you can. read more

without question the worst bank I have ever done business with. Auto dealership used NBT bank to secure a loan for a vehicle. I was not familiar with them so did not question it. I purchased the vehicle the last week of April and it is now the last week of June and I am still not able to register the vehicle because NBT bank refuses to send me a copy of the title. They will only send it to DMV and that is only AFTER DMV requests it from NBT bank. I have been to the DMV 5 times now to get this straightened out. DMV will NOT call or fax a bank. their exact words were we are too busy to call every bank to request documents. that is all we would be doing. If you see NBT bank on a loan application DO NOT sign with them. get financing elsewhere. I am not in the process of refinancing with a local bank. I explained that I had somewhere to go for the weekend and all they would do was allow me to withdraw $100. They promised to have accounts unlocked on Monday however it took another week and a million emails and phone calls to finally get it straighten out. Got a solar loan with them a couple of years ago. Their website is terrible, and even simple things like downloading a statement don't work. But that's not the worst part. I recently started the process to refinance my mortgage. I learned that NBT had placed a lien on my house because of the loan. The mortgage company said this was fine, I could setup a lien subordination. That required me to get documentation from NBT, which was impossible. I decided to just pay off the loan so that I wouldn't have to deal with them. Bad idea. It's now 3 weeks later and they refuse to release the lien or provide me with a loan closing letter (even though my balance shows up as zero). They're holding my lien hostage, the agents I've called say they can't do anything about it and it just takes however long they want to release it. Now I can't move forward with my refinance. NBT Bank's customer service is way below the quality it was 10 years ago. When I first opened the account, I was helped quite nicely. However, after the treatment was received when a fraudulent deposit was attempted, NEVER again will I be suckered! They closed my account and refused to serve me any longer, right at the cut-off for my SSI direct deposit, which I won't receive until the end of June! If I could give zero stars that is exactly what you'd get. Especially the manager in the Amsterdam, NY office at Hannaford Center, a negative five rating! Now I will be a homeless, worthless slob since I cannot pay for my rent, and the landlord won't accept excuses; no money for taxis or gas, and no money for the laundromat! It's ironic that making an online transaction purchasing a vitamin goes through like it should. When I attempt to make a second purchase before leaving that same site it gets flagged as fraud. After struggling to understand the dialect of the support person and explaining over and over what took place it finally got straightened out. Then of course a short time later that very same day on another site that I've been a member of for years I try to make a change in membership and yep, it's flagged as a fraud. I got a dental loan through NBT Bank. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. Terrible customer service and the absolute worst online banking / loan site I've ever used! One month, I get a warning that they are no longer accepting one-time payments, so I'm directed to set up automatic payments. I was frustrated because I only had 2 payments left. I set it up and the next month, I find out my payment did not go through. I contacted customer service and they said there was no evidence I set up auto payments. So, I went ahead and paid my balance in full to avoid dealing with them anymore. Now, over a month later, I still show a balance on my account. I do NOT recommend this bank for any purpose! My house is being held hostage by NBT bank because they put a lien on my house for a $53,000 loan for solar panels that I never asked for and never wanted, all because they don't understand how a deed with life estate works. Unbeknownst to me, as I was visiting North Carolina at the time the Covid-19 pandemic struck and I was under doctor's orders to quarantine in place and not travel, my adult son, Donald Lorenzo, while not the owner of the property, caused solar panels to be installed and financed through NBT Bank. Neither the solar panel installer nor this bank ever checked the real estate records or required proof that Donald Lorenzo was in fact, the owner of the house and therefore legally authorized to contract and finance the installation of said solar panels. HE WAS NOT. My son committed suicide on 1/26/22 (before the first loan payment was even due.) I am a retired senior citizen living on social security and now in addition to dealing with the loss of my son I can't sell my house and get on with my life because NBT bank wants their money from me rather than from my son's estate. You would expect a big bank to know how to interpret a deed with life estate and know that although my son's name is listed as the grantee, my son retained the REMAINDER INTEREST i.e. a future interest in the property which does NOT come into being until the life estate holder (me, the grantor) passes away. Only then does he become the legal owner in fee simple absolute of the premises. Unfortunately, my son passed away first. His future interest in the property thereby passed to me, the grantor, by operation of law, making me the full owner of the property again. The Sungage Lending Team is being totally unreasonable, telling me I would have to take them to court (this after not wanting to talk to me and avoiding my calls and letter.) A 72 year old divorcee now has to incur untold legal expenses to take on a big bank with a staff of lawyers when she has done nothing wrong and is the victim here - this is not fair and I strongly advise anyone and everyone from doing business with NBT Bank I'll be posting this review everywhere I can. read more

If you are a customer do not use the NBT mobile app! I made a local check deposit and was informed of an arbitrary 7 business day hold because they claim that there is a lot of fraud with the app. When I called the 800 Call Center number to complain I was informed that they had the right to hold checks for up to 30 business days! I have been with NBT 14 years and the bank is no longer my local bank, but has morphed into another impersonal big bank. I will say that the people in the local branches are professional and helpful, however. My advice is avoid the mobile app and the call center at all costs! Utilize your local NBT branches. read more

I have an auto loan through NBT bank and had numerous issues through the last 4+ years I have been dealing with them. Please note that I selected NBT bank as they offered the lowest interest rate the dealership could find for my auto loan at the time so obviously it looked like the best choice. Little do I now know, this "low rate" is most likely due to the company nailing you for hidden fees and "late" payments (interest additions) throughout the life of your loan. The first issue I had with this bank occurred the month after I established my loan with them when I never received their coupon book for payments. After the first month of not receiving a bill I finally called the bank and was told that I was BEHIND on payments while I was UNAWARE of my payment amount and where to even send payments as I received literally no correspondence from them in the mail. They didn't even call me, just started taking on interest for a payment I had no information on. You would think that a company would contact you somehow when this happened - nope, this was apparently all on me. Personally, I think it is ridiculous that a company in this day and age doesn't send out statements or emails regarding loan information. Second issue, I used to mail in my payments and little did I know they were processing these payments outside their grace period (even though I was sending them before the due date) and nailing me for interest, essentially growing my loan out of control. The worst part is that I had NO CLUE this was going on until one day I called to make a payment and learned about all this accrued interest. It is unacceptable that amount of time they take to "process" payments, and then scolding the consumer with interest when they are the ones not doing their job in a timely manner. To make things worse, when I found out this was happening I switched to calling in my payments since automatic payments were not available to me. This did not help the processing issue, even though I was using ACH information and I was STILL being charged interest. There was essentially NO way to fix this interest issue no matter how and when you tried to pay. The most recent issue occurred when I called to pay off my auto loan with a lump-sum buy out as I am looking to get a new vehicle. When they gave me my balance it was HIGHER than what the dealership told me I owed when they contacted the bank, again due to this interest scam. I was done with this and decided to just bite the bullet and pay the amount. I was told it would take them 10 days to process the payment, which again I did providing my direct bank information for an ACH. The money was pulled from my account the next business day, however, the bank will not release the lien thy placed on the car even though the payment was processed. They told me today (6 days after the payment was processed and the money was taken out of my account) that they need the money to sit in their account for 10 DAYS, and that the lien release would then be mailed to my house after that. I was also told that this could take up to 3 weeks after the ten days they have been holding my money from payment. THAT IS A POTENTIAL 31 DAY TURN AROUND ON THEIR END. I now am being forced to drive a car that I intended to pay off and trade in 8 days ago up to for potentially 26 MORE DAYS hoping that nothing happens so I can still then make the trade in at the amount quoted to me. At this point I am baffled. I will NEVER do business with this bank again. Their rude customer service representatives and managers made my experience the worst I have ever had with a bank and I am so sick of all the games they played with my loan. Next time I know to go with a more reputable bank, even if the rates are higher, because this was not worth it. I beg everyone to not use this bank. I wouldn't wish the experience this bank has given me on my worst enemy and that says a lot. read more

Do not get a loan from this organization. DO NOT. I got a car loan through them via the place I purchased my car and it has been a nightmare ever since. I regularly pay about a month in advance, so I always have two payments in, just in case. And yet, even though I am paid in advance of two months, even though I make regular payments I get a late notice from them almost every month. I've called, emailed, written letters and it is impossible to resolve. I just received another notice indicating I owe them for August (which I paid in June), even though I sent a letter with both my September payment (paid in August) AND October payment (paid in September) explaining that I wasn't late. I just paid my October payment (they use a coupon book) and yet by their records I owe them for two months. Incompetent, unprofessional and inept. Unprofessional on the phone and misleading. If you say someone needs a 640 credit score and they have one and then you deny them based on a nearly 3 year discharged bankruptcy due to divorce you are a dishonest institution. Credit had very obviously been re-established and had gone up over 100 points since filing. I would not use these guys as I truly feel they are not honest and wasted my time while hurting my credit with their inquiry. Maybe they should try being up front and say they just don't offer credit if you've ever had a bankruptcy. I tried to turn my internet off and use the data, hoping maybe it was my internet, but when I do that, the app just won't load anything anymore.
