Getting my NC license at the DMV in Shallotte was quick and easy. Of course, it helped that I perused the NCDOT website and downloaded the NC Driver's handbook prior to venturing out to the DMV. if you have all the necessary documents, changing over an out-of-state license is fairly painless. With the new REAL ID laws in effect, you need proof of identification, insurance, and residence, and the website will list all forms of acceptable documents. Showed up at the office around 10:30 AM during the week, and only had to wait about ten minutes for an agent. The entire process took less than twenty minutes. The eye test and the road sign test are taken right at the booth, along with your picture, and presto, you'll walk out with a temporary paper copy of your license and the real one gets mailed out within 7-10 business days. As of November 2025, this location opens at 7 AM. I arrived at 7:15. There was about 20 people in line ahead of me inside. It took 45 minutes to get to the desk. I was given a ticket with an estimate of a three hour wait. I was able to leave and get a text when I would be next in line for assistance. There were no available appointments at any DMVs across North Carolina, so this was the most realistic option. It looked as if they were only two employees working through all these appointments. read more

I made an appointment online 3 months ago for 10:30 Wednesday August 20 at the Shallotte office. I was checked in at 10:16. While waiting I observed there were only two examiners taking customers. A third employee was there but not taking customers. I was called up at 10:32 and got my license renewed with no problem. I would like to commend the employees for handling customers in a timely manner. Several walk-in customers stated they had been there since 6:00 AM in order to get on the list to be seen that day. They were not happy with the wait. I hope North Carolina will get more offices and employees available to accommodate the ever-growing population. read more

As a first time resident of NC I was so very disappointed at the attitude of the lady working the front door in late August. I fully understand the need for COVID protocol however when people with appointments are taken in 20 and 30 minutes ahead of their appointments while I wait behind an elderly lady who is struggling in the heat - that does not seem fair. They should be taking people with appointments at the time of their appointments (like other DMV NC employees do). Her conversations with people in line seem to lack compassion and the southern hospitality that drew me to this area. read more

The picture says plate agency. The description says driver's license agency. One opens at 8. One opens at 9. I guess we'll see.

It was great. Did not wait a long time and the staff were very helpful. The website was equally helpful.

We just moved from CA to NC and had to get new DL and Plates.....this was one of the easiest trips to the DMV that we've EVER had! We arrived at 8:10 and EACH took a number for our DL. We waited approx 1 hour for our numbers to be called and then went up separately. Took approx 10 minutes to give our info and take our eye/sign test. Everyone was patient and very nice to each of us! Then we went over to the Registration department, walked right in, and within 5 minutes had our plates! Trust me when I say this......ya'll have it SO easy vs CA and WAY cheaper too! I'm SO happy to be a permanent resident of NC now and thank you Shalotte DMV for a wonderful experience! :)! read more

Shallotte is awesome. The lady knew her stuff and registration for the first time was a breeze. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about Whiteville. We went with what we thought we needed, she gave a list of additional things, went back and had to get more things - finally on the 4th trip we got it done. Every time we went there was something else she wanted and she wasn't exactly pleasant about it either. Getting our licenses was a bit different. The ladies were very nice and told us what we needed to transfer from NH. Interesting enough, they would not accept our NH licenses with our middle initials, we had to provide proof of what they stood for (this was not for real ID's) then in order for hubby to keep his motorcycle license, he had to either take a test or give up his CDL. That portion of his license wouldn't transfer over, yet if he had a simple operator it would. Made absolutely no sense to us, and still doesn't. Didn't make much sense to the DMV people either since they couldn't tell us why, but there is one less truck driver in the world courtesy of NC-DMV. read more
