My boys has attended Near the Pier for 4 years now. They absolutely love the school and the staff. The teachers are a great encouragement and the academic program is great. The boys confidence are outstanding and I contribute a lot of that to this school and the teachers. The summer camp is amazing!! They attend summer fun trips every week and my boys are usually worn out by Pick Up time Extremely clean, and well managed by the director Ms Tonja, who I must say is the most supportive. I had backup care scheduled here and they turned my kids away. Apparently they require PCR tests, but they had never communicated this requirement to me. The staff was rude and unhelpful to my wife in person and to me on the phone. The center director was unavailable and they stated that no one was in charge in her absence. They also do not let parents see the classrooms or meet the teachers. We were supposed to send one of our children there another day this week, but we are not willing to under those conditions. read more

My kids LOVE NTP. The teachers are all incredibly caring; they actually put in the time to get to know them and tailor their approach to each kid. Miss Sonja has raised both of our boys as infants and my oldest still adores her. Miss kayla is a wonderful teacher for silly toddlers. And miss Tonja runs the facility with such grace. Out of all the daycares I've experienced, Near the pier is the best!!! My daughter has been here since she was 1 years old. The teachers are amazing. My daughter has learned a lot here. They contributed a lot to her potty training as well because I was having a time with her lbs. They are always open even days the schools are closed. The hours of operation are very Convenient, esp. for us working parents. They take the kids on lots of trips and have many activities to keep them engaged and involved. My husband and I go through Bright Horizons for back up care and we can't say enough nice things about Near the Pier Development Center. They've always been available for us in a pinch or planning ahead. I know our kids are well taken care of when we drop them off. Not only are they there for us but for our 2 children love going. We LOVE Near the Pier! My son started in the infant room. His teachers were so attentive and loving to him there and were always quick to answer our questions and concerns as first time parents. They have an app that tracks his activity/diaper/feeds through the day and is consistently updated. Now he's in an older class and he's constantly showing off how much he's learning. He's always bringing home fun art projects and talks about how much fun he has with his friends and teachers. I'm also fairly sure he eats better lunches than I do! This is completely untrue! Do not discredit me or my review. That is incredibly unprofessional and i have no reason to lie. In fact, we used your services through Bright Horizons. We filed this same complaint with Bright Horizons and were not charged a fee. You previously messaged me, several months ago, with this same sentiment. I respectfully replied that I had already filed a complaint. So disappointing that an establishment would say something like this...the same business owner who private messaged me on Jan 27th. How can you tell whether or not i was at your facility based off my Yelp photo? Thats ridiculous! WARNING: HORROR STORY, PHYSICAL HARM This was my first experience with childcare, with my one year old son, and a very unpleasant one to say the least. The Director Ms. Tonja is credible, and really pulled me in and made me feel my child was safe, but that later proved to be untrue. His first week there, I was able to watch on the camera, and he literally sat in the same position (watching television with the teacher and other students) He was slouched over, while the teacher had a pillow behind her back and the other students were laying on the rug. I had to call and ask if someone could help reposition HIM, he was new, and although he could move himself he probably wasn't comfortable there. A few weeks went by and he seemed to be comfortable, but I noticed he would come home and start pinching! He is not beaten or pinched at home for no reason whatsoever, so this behavior was very strange to me. Then the Director, Ms. Tonja seemingly quit/or wasn't there, and I only knew because I overheard a woman who started coming in with orange hair badmouthing her to another employee, come to find out the woman with the orange hair was the "executive director," I would have never known, but it was clear she was unfit to be in that position. When she started there, and Ms. Tonja wasn't around it was obvious, things had changed for the worst. I would recieve my son with a dirty diaper, or with snot all over his face, I had to literally ask for a tissue. It just seemed unorganized, but then finally, the worst of the worst happened. I went to pick up my child and the executive director came to the door and stated "Your son's teacher needs to speak with you." My son comes out and has an open wound on his face under his eye, and a scratch mark on the side of his face. The teacher told me another child did it, and she pulled that other child away. THIS HAPPENED AT 10AM in the morning, I was not notified until after 5 when picking up my son. His teacher then proceeds and says she had no idea that I was not notifed and she could get the manager if I want. To my surprise it is the women with the orange hair, and I say this because she is unprofessional, had never introduced herself, badmouths her employees, dresses in pajamas, and this is the only way I am able to identify her. She comes to the door and explains that it happened, and that my child is very calm, and the other child has been in multiple situations like this before. She then says she has asked the parents to trim his nails, and she can not assure me that this won't happen again because it happens. I understand that its a child, but not notifying me right away was the number one concern for me. Her lack of empathy, and concern for the situation was what made it even worse. After that day I never sent my child back. If it had been something MORE serious would they have even called to let me know? There were too many red flags for me, and I felt it was unsafe for him to return. I ended up finding a new daycare and my son immediately blossomed, he began talking more, knew more words within only ONE WEEK of being there. At his new center THERE IS NO TELEVISION. So the children recieve optimal interaction, and play and it has worked wonders for my child. The staff are exceptional, and I can feel the love at this center and it shows in my child. The teachers are attentive, and he comes home with something he learned, HE NO LONGER PINCHES, and has greatly improved so much so that even his physician has noticed the change. She asked me what has changed in a months time, and I told her his daycare. Her EXACT words were that because of the television, there was probably a lack of interaction, and watching TV 2-3 hours at a time (which is what I would WITNESS on the cameras, in the classroom) is what probably contributed to his behavior/speech delay. When Ms. Tonja seemingly returned and noticed my son wasn't there she called to find out what happened and I explained the situation to her. Of course she was much more professional and had nothing but nice things to say about the lady with the orange hair "executive director," and apologized on everyone's behalf. I asked if she would be leaving, and she did confirm the rumor I had overheard the "executive director" bad mouthing her for. Overall, the pros of this daycare is that my son did start eating on his own, because they literally place a plate of food infront of him, and they barely give enough time to eat, but he did learn to feed himself. Other than that I can not say I saw any other positive change in my son during his time there. This place does encourage independance, but I feel its a bit too hardcore for a one year old. If my son was crying his tears would be wiped away and he is just asked to continue with the program. And that is the overall vibe of this center. I had my first baby in July of 2018 and was dreading returning to work. When we dropped our then 12 week old (Henry) off on his first day, Ms. Tonia (Director) and Ms. Nayda both let me and his Dad stay as long as we wanted, and they kept giving him back to me for just one more kiss goodbye. They know how to help new parents in ways we don't even realize we need help. I routinely forget our diaper bag at school and Ms. Tonia always checks it to make sure no dirty bottle will sit overnight. We get pictures and videos of our little man doing so many fun things, and that is in addition to the Watch Me Grow camera in the room that we can watch live at any time during the day. We can check our My Kid's Day App to see why time he ate, slept and had a diaper change. The communication is incredible. We even moved to an apartment that would keep us close enough to keep him at Near The Pier for even longer than originally planned. This group of women (and men) are a family, and it shows the minute you walk in the door. They love what they do and every single teacher is ready and willing to step in and help another teacher with a task or if they are short on hands. I often feel like we are dropping our baby at a home daycare with close family relatives, but he also gets the benefits of a larger child development center (Japanese lessons, arts and crafts, social interaction with so many other great kids.) I was a nanny for 10 years and I was never able to expose my clients' children to the amount of learning opportunities as Henry gets on a daily basis, AND he is loved and taken care of like he is the only kid there. We have been looking at several infant care services around, and - while Near the Pier might not appear as new or organized as some others at 1st sight - it is an incredible place for children. There's always a good vibe in there, children are playing, smiling, having a good time. Our little one is always well attended for in the infant room, all teachers are cordial, professional, and they seem to care for our baby as if it was their own. The head master Monica has been in business for 26+ years and it clearly shows. Unlike other places where teacher turn-over is high, the appearance is good but the substance is less, we felt this place was all about substance. Yes, the walls may need a new touch of paint, but so what - do the children really care? They are loved and happy there. read more

I know a bunch of Japanese people come to Chicago to work or study with kids. This is the perfect school to start with! Coming from Japan along with my internship in Chicago, my 4-year-old son attended this school for 3.5 months. He didn't speak nor write a word of English when he first came here but even for such a short period he has learnt so much at this school! He now knows a lot of English songs and phrases; and enjoys writing alphabets and numbers. Of course it was hard for him at the beginning but they have a Japanese teacher and all the teachers and kids are so welcoming to my kid, which all made it easy for him to adjust. Ms. Tanya is great and Near the Pier is too. Very kind and caring secure place. My two boys (10 and 11) are in the Summer Camp 2019 and are loving it. Ms. Tanya runs a tight ship and expects the children to be polite and to respectful to adults, including their parents. Grateful to her for her support. Wonderful location near navy pier. I work at Northwestern so could not be more convenient for me. Relatively new to Chicago so love that the kids get to take advantage of downtown venues like Maggy Daily and other Chicago landmarks. The boys come home tired and sleep well. Seems that they spend very little time in the building and most of their time outdoors enjoying what the city has to offer. I really enjoy taking my kids on the red line with me to work and walking them to Ms. Tanya's. It is an amazing and beautiful walk and very convenient to work. Like not having to worry about driving, rushing to pick them up fighting for a parking space or queuing up in a line of cars, although I've never seen a que of cars outside so pick up and drop off probably isn't a big deal. Amazing for the heart of the city. Also, her hours are fantastic. 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Usually drop my boys off well after starting time and well before pick-up time, but it's nice to know that if I get stuck late in the day or have to go into an unexpected meeting early in the morning that I'm covered. Nice diverse group of kids, swimming on Fridays, field trips and playing hard every day which is wonderful. What really gets me excited is journaling daily. My youngest hates to write and avoids it. So glad to have chance for him to write daily so that he can build on the progress we made this year at his school. Children also get a chance to read and the kids tell me they "get to" answer questions from staff about what they read to test their comprehension. Ms. Tanya has been caring for children in this location for a very long time and knows what she is doing. I'm sure you can find more expensive places that may be newer and more glamorous, but my boys can't wait to get there, don't want to leave when I come to pick them up and are worn out at the end of the day. Great value in the heart of a beautiful and exciting part of the city and my kids are loving the excitement of being downtown and being safe and well supervised. I consider the Near the Pier staff to be part of my family. I take care in knowing that my son is going to a place that cares about his development and well-being just as much as I do. This place is INCREDIBLE! I work part time, and when I am in a pinch, I drop my 22month old daughter off here. I never worry for a minute while she is there because the staff is SO welcoming, loving, and happy when they see her! I know my daughter has fun because when I leave she says 'bye' and runs to play! The first time I picked her up, I was in awe because all the kids were sitting at the table doing flash cards with a teacher. The kids were so well behaved- says a lot about the teachers. The teachers also speak to the kids so politely and like they are adults! The director, Ms. Tonia, is full of life and super accommodating. She makes you feel comfortable leaving your baby, is always in the classrooms, and is very hands on! I drive 15mins out of my way to use this center because it's that amazing. My almost 2 year-old son has been attending for over a month half-days and, although he cries every-time he arrives, he ends up happy an playful (I can see him through a camera because they provide this service). The teachers are friendly and nice. There are no NUTS served ever, which is great. They have a menu (not the best food) you can view on the bulletin board, and Ms. Tonya is great as the head of school. They are not strict, more laid-back than other daycares I visited. He likes it, and so do I. I only recommend it for early childhood education, as a daycare. read more

I absolutely agree with the prior post that NTP "does business with heart." My daughter started at NTP's Infant Care program when she was 13 weeks. Now, she just turned a year and we feel as though NTP is part of the family. Her instructors in the infant room are fantastic. They truly love and care for my daughter as their own. When I drop my daughter off in the morning, she always gives a big smile to the instructor and reaches for her. They have great developmental activities and games for the kids. The management at NTP is also fantastic. Safety and the kids' well-being is a top priority. Both the management and instructors have developped a great repore with the parents and always keep us informed as to the upcoming events. I've visited and even tried other daycares, but NTP is by far the best I've seen. read more

Near the Pier Development is amazing. I called to inquire about enrollment/touring the facility. I was told that Ms. Tonia Evans would return my call to go over the details. I received a call back from her on a Friday evening and we talked for about 30 minutes - this is very rare. You could hear the fervor and excitement about Near the Pier radiating through the phone. My son and I went on the tour today and he absolutely enjoyed himself. I consider myself to be a very involved and intentive parent, and I definitely was not let down. The staff is attentive and unified. The kids are genuinely loved and supported. My son forgot that I had even left! I can gladly say my son will be attending after today's exuberant experience. My wife and I enrolled our son in Near the Pier about a month ago. We looked at various options including a subsidized day care through our wife's employer. Our son is seventeen months old and we have been leaving him with nannies up until this point. We were reluctant to move forward with a day care because our last nanny was very good and we were afraid he would not assimilate to a new environment where he would be dividing the attention he receives from his caregiver among multiple children. That being said, we also recognized that it could prove beneficial for his development to be exposed to other children and to learn in more of a classroom environment. As you can imagine, the first week was difficult for him to be in a foreign environment. As an only child, he also was exposed to other children for the first time. That being said, in the weeks following his enrollment, we were surprised how quickly he adapted and are confident that this is due to the warmth of the staff, the level of engagement he receives in learning new things at the school, and the extent to which he enjoys interacting with other children. We could not be happier with the attention he receives and are able to monitor him through a streaming video while we are at the office. My wife and I's respective parents watch him regularly and are very comfortable with the attention he receives and how much he has been learning. In addition to being attentive, the staff is focused on teaching our son different words, colors, and in promoting good behavior. Outside of his time in the classroom, this has translated in him being more respectful at home. For example, he had just begun to hit my wife and throw things which he subsequently scaled back on due to the staff teaching that this was not appropriate behavior. Moreover, he is learning how to eat with a plastic fork and be more "civilized" of a seventeen month old (if that is possible :-)). We would recommend Near the Pier to any parents contemplating enrolling their children in an environment where they will get the attention they deserve and also be given the opportunity to develop in a manner appropriate for their age. read more

During our time at NTP, it felt more like dropping off my son with family and trusted friends for the day. My son is my pride and joy, and I always knew he was loved and cared for, which was extremely important to me. I did not have experience with a daycare center before my son was born. So I was a little worried. But the care givers in the infant room were great with him. This place sucks. The education and food for your child is deplorable. The management, which has changed twice in less than a year, is never able to provide the services they advertise. The "Corporate Office" is indicative of the said management. There are no additional languages taught other than ebonics, in which most of the staff speaks fluently. Also, it appears the infants education is higher than the staff... are they even qualified as I was led to believe. The edible choices for your child are a joke in today's market of upscale daycares, of which they consider themselves...ha. Currently, they delivered to all existing parent clients a price increase of about 90% due December 2016. "Corporate" says they haven't increased they're prices for 18 years...another sign of poor management. I checked with friends of mine whose two daughters were enrolled 18 years ago, the statement was not true. Ultimately, this increase is for the same crappy service. The facility is falling apart with rotted sunken floors, non-ventalated washrooms, filthy kitchen, dirty classrooms and antiquated instruments for teaching...don't even mention the toys. I only gave it a one star rating because negative zero wasn't an option. Near The Pier, what a joke, should be Near The Garbage Dump. Word of advice, be concerned first of the services you advertise to educate your clientele and your bottom line will justify an increase. I'm rescuing my child from this hell hole, tired of bringing them home hungry, solied from minimal diaper changing and with other children's clothes on. Also, why can't they come home without the trauma of the administrator yelling to keep the children quite because of a very short staff by the end of the day...5 o'clock. Don't let a pending holiday come within the weekly schedule, your child may have to drive themselves home, it's almost a ghost town for any staff during those times. I once read a review that this place was "Ghetto", what a nice understatement. Today I shadowed my granddaughter with her mom at Near The Pier Development Day Care Center. As an educator, there are things that immediately grab my attention as it pertains to quality daycare. Did I get a warm, inviting feeling when I entered? Did I feel my granddaughter would feel safe here? Did I get a genuine feeling of a well prepared, loving staff? As my granddaughter's mom and I left our baby to monitor her activities via an app on an IPad, I wondered if she would be made to feel comfortable adapting to a new environment. Did I see happy, content, well cared for infants, toddlers, three and four year olds? Were our questions, comments and observations received without making us feel like we were annoying? Did I see a child friendly, developmentally appropriate center that inspires young minds? I say "Yes" to all the above. I am looking forward to a new, exciting journey with my granddaughter at Near the Pier Center. read more

I was surprised to see that someone else gave Near the Pier such a negative review. My son (who is now 23 months old) attended Near the Pier for nearly a year, until we recently moved out of state, and our experience was nothing short of fantastic. He had been at home with a nanny for the first year of his life, so I was pretty nervous about enrolling him in daycare. He was initially in the infant room, then went on to the toddler room, and I was very happy with the staff in both rooms. I found the entire staff warm and caring, and my little guy just loved them. Also, I never saw a staff member change a child's diaper without wearing rubber gloves, nor did I see anything else that would make me question their cleanliness. read more

My son attended the summer camp at Near The Pier Development Center. He absolutely loved it and looked forward to all the fun activities each day. Ms Tonya and Ms Dorrina were the best. They were always reassuring me he would be fine and Ms Dorinna would even send me pictures while on the activity to show me my son was having a great time. I beleive they genuinely care about the kids which is all I can ever ask for in a place I trust with my child. My son even made new friends, and I noticed a positive change in his character influenced by the variety of children he was with each day. The only thing I would recommend is to add more fun academics like reading time and math time to keep the kids in learning mode while they are out of school. I truly appreciate Ms. Dorrina and Ms Tonya as well as the other staff members who helped care for my son. Have a great school year!! read more

This is the best day care center we have seen till now our child is very happy to go here and have learnt so many things.

My 3 yr old attends Near the Pier now. We pulled him from another day care he was in because the curriculum wasn't the best. I must say, he as learned so much in just a short amount of time he has been here. He is always counting, EVERYTHING! lol He says his days of the week amd months of the year. He is spelling his colors ("g-r-e-e-n spells green, mommy!"), knows all of his shapes, and loves doing his "homework." Yes, homework, they send home a homework packet to reinforce what they are teaching in class. My husband and I love it. They have extended hrs, (6:30a-6:30p) During the school year, they always take the kids somewhere fun (museums, zoo, parks, and other places). They also have a summer program that gets the kids out every day of the week, sports, movies, swimming, etc. (something different every day). Costs a little extra, but well worth it. The kids have so much fun. Whenever I come in to pick him up, there is always someone reading in my son's class. Sometimes, one of the after school (older kids!) I like seeing that. My 6yr old attended here before he went to kindergarten. He was well prepared, and was ahead of the other kids in his class in reading, and math. The teachers are very nice, and I have never had a problem in that area. Many of the same teachers were there when my older son attended, that is always a good sign. My children attended the daycare for over 4 years. My daughter transitioned into each classroom through out the years and was very well cared for at each stage of her development. We have since moved out of town and they attend a new school. She is more advanced than the other children in her new pre-school class because of Near the Pier. I too am surprised to have found such a negative review on this daycare. My children (now 3 yrs and 16 months) have attended NTP since they were each 3 months old. I truly have found every caregiver there to be extraordinary in every way. They are loving and very focused on the development of each child. I have always found the facility to be very clean and the caregivers to pay close attention to the cleaniless of each room and have NEVER in 3 yrs ever seen a diaper changed w/o gloves on by a caregiver - cannot say the same about a parent changing a diaper there but that is up to the parent. Both my children are pacing well ahead of their developmental milestones. I attribute much of that to the attention and care that they receive at Near the Pier. I always recommend this daycare to my friends who are considering daycare as an option. I absolutely love this daycare for my eight month old daughter. I have had her here for over a month now and not a day goes by where she does not get attention and love from her infant care teachers to the entire staff at this daycare. I could have not asked for a better care provider for my baby girl. The infant care teachers love each and every single child that they care for. On top of that they are excited to talk to the parents about their infants daily . They show so much love attention to each individual infant that I have no idea how they do it. I will make sure my child is here for the duration of her daycare and kindergarten years. The 1.5 hour drive each way is so worth it given that amount of care and love my daughter gets. Out of all the daycare facilities I have visited by my house and work this is the only one that offers cameras to view your child which says a lot about this place. They have also been open since the early 90's which is rare to find also. I absolutely cannot say enough about this place and look forward to each and every day I go there with my daughter.
