As it turns…read moreout, my older daughter has worked for two Japanese offices in Hawaii where she had to communicate (writing and speaking) exclusively in Japanese. In both cases, she was the lone American in the department and she was able to function. I did drop my younger daughter off in Japan for college and she is now working in a Japanese office. Both of my kids have been able to function in a completely Japanese environment thanks to this school.

I decided to start off with Level 1, the most basic course they offer. Coming back to Japanese in a non-graded and non-tested format is unusual because the class doesn't have all the testing normally associated with foreign language classes in high school and college in Texas. Japanese at a college level required that I learn hiragana and katakana over the span of six weeks, whereas this course gives you about 10 weeks for only hiragana, with katakana and kanji taught in later courses. The material has a strong focus on numbers early on in the course and the material has a business-minded bent for people who might go over to Japan for work-related reasons. Classes are easy-paced and instructors are patient with new students over pronunciation, character recognition and vocabulary drills. It is normal for classes to start off very crowded and to shrink over time. Some students just do not grasp the concepts taught in Japanese (different sentence structure, learning foreign character-based alphabets) and this was similar to what I experienced in college. Students who struggle are encouraged to attempt to take a class over again to reinforce the concepts and language. The classroom is a mix of different aged students from seniors in high school to actual seniors from a range of backgrounds, so classes are very diverse. Our instructor is a very nice and patient sensei who engages with the class frequently throughout each lesson. Portions of the class involve reviewing homework, doing vocabulary drills, playing "bingo" with hiragana characters, and question and answer worksheets where you talk to fellow classmates. Let me also state that the key to success in this class is through networking with the other students. Having someone else that understands the material from a different perspective can be invaluable when tackling a largely unrecognizable language like Japanese to a native English speaker. People who work alone seem to struggle more and drop out quickly, but if you're willing to work with your group or make a few friends, the class is immensely easier. I'm reviewing only the Level 1 class portion in my review. I will amend it later if/when I attend Level 2 courses.

My nephew did not attend one class, receive any books or materials from this institution. My nephew has learning disabilities, and I am his Job and Educational Coach, I was informed that I could not assist him in his classes. Therefore, my nephew decided to withdraw from the institution. This school took almost $6000 from a person with disabilities! If you inquired about classes at this facility and decided not to attend the facility; then check your your loans and grants because the school may have been disbursed funds for you that they kept instead of sending them back...! We will probably seek legal counsel to recover the Pell Grant Monies... I will keep you posted!

Government funded programs are meant to alleviate the financial strains on bettering education. This facility advises students to take out loans to cover additional charges for free school programs which is a violation of the programs. The owner is rude and unprofessional. I requested a cancellation in writing, which I have been denied. However, I continue to receive harassing emails from the president after I asked not to be contacted any further. I have even stated I would involve my attorney and she is still sending distasteful emails. I wouldn't recommend this facility to ANYONE. There is a reason they moved from Desoto to an office that's hard to find in Farmers Branch

That was definitely not me in high school - and I went to a great private Catholic high school. I love that they now have different levels of the IB program to fit each student's goals. The school continues to grow and expand - yet maintain what we love about a caring, smaller community. Yesterday a school in Allen accidentally called me saying that they had my son's phone but could not give me the child's name because there are almost 2k 9th graders, and she did not know. I can't imagine being somewhere that the office staff did not know my kid's name. Everyone at the Westwood School knows my student - and what would best serve him academically and emotionally - as they know what is "normal" or not normal in his every day interactions. I never worry about him during the day as I know he has the most caring community teaching, guiding, supporting, and looking out for him. We can't wait for the beautiful new campus. The tour last week just blew me away as to how amazing it will be for the kids - and I can't wait for our new gym! The teachers are phenomenal and like college level educators! There aren't enough stars for how much this school has made our son confident, caring, and ready for anything life hands him. I don't worry about his future. He believes he can do anything he wants to do in life - and I love everything about this school. There is nothing like it when I talk to all of my other parent friends around the nation - and I am so blessed we found it when he was small.

His experience has been what I had always wanted for him. A place where kids are encouraged to be their personal best - a place where they are encouraged to discover the answer rather than regurgitate it. Pam Butler - the founder - was inspired to start the school based on Martin Luther King Jr's "I have a dream" speech. It was her dream to have a school foundation based on the content of one's character in a supportive community with personal excellence as the goal. This school has empowered our son to be a confident and independent learner who feels like he can do anything. I highly recommend checking out Westwood for your family, as it is the best kept secret in Dallas.
