Having a bad back…read moredefinitely limits participation in many sports, so recognizing my limitations and in an effort to change my sedentary lifestyle, I bought a starter set of discs in April 2014 and went to the City Park Disc Golf Course. My first few visits here were "just ok", as I could not throw the discs as far as I had hoped. I also threw a few in the water, which is no fun either. The grass on the course was high and this made locating your discs somewhat of a pain if you didn't watch exactly where it landed. But I felt good about being outside and at least I was getting a little exercise as I walked the course. It's easy to gain proficiency rather quickly in this sport and I watched my score go from the 80's down to the low 60's in just 2-3 months of casual play. In the summer of 2014, the course started receiving more attention and the grass was getting cut more frequently and they installed several brand new baskets. They also started repositioning many of the baskets and eventually reversed the entire order of the course. If you haven't played in the last few months, the course layout will brand new to you, and the new layout presents more challenges. Some of the trickier holes (baskets) can be: Hole 1 - This short hole forces you to throw parallel with the water to your right and makes you go around a tree next to the shoreline. Therefore, you have to throw it out far enough to get around the tree, but high enough to make sure it gets back to the shoreline. Hole 2 - The tee box to this hole forces you to throw across the lagoon, but unless you hit the tree on the other side, there is little chance of losing a disc. Hole 3 - Unless you play it safe by going along the shoreline, this hole will force you to throw over the water into a basket on a peninsula. And yes, I have lost a few discs here. Hole 4 - Here is another hole where you can play it safe by throwing parallel to the shore as there is over 225 feet of water on your left to cross to the basket. Hole 6 - Although short, you have to throw straight or your disc will bounce between trees like a pinball. Hole 8 - Grip it and rip it as this hole is even longer than it appears. Hole 11 - Overshoot this basket on top of a hill and your disc will disappear in the brush. Hole 13 - This will test your skill at making your disc perform a right hook in order to reach the basket. Hook it too much and you are in thick brush. Hole 18 - If you want to make a par, you better be able to throw at least 225 feet straight over the water. The course has steadily improved this year, as has participation among local residents. It can be played and enjoyed by people of all ages and athletic ability and I would recommend this course to anyone. It's a fun sport that requires very little start up costs and no greens fees such as the real game of golf If you do happen to play, use a sharpie marker and write your name and phone # on all of your discs. I have had at least 5 discs returned to me by "Joe", who regularly fishes them out of the lagoon. Hope to see y'all out there.

Since Lafreniere Park's disc golf course is the only other course in the New Orleans metro area, I decided to give it a try. The course layout is fairly logical, but a map would be helpful if you've never played here before. However, once you play 2 or 3 times, you realize that the course's layout is pretty easy to follow from hole to hole and no map is necessary. The 24 hole course is laid out in what can be best described as several clusters of holes. Holes 1-7 are situated between N. Scenic Drive and the park's lagoon. With the exception of holes 6 & 7; which have a lot of trees "in the way", these holes offer fairly wide open fairways with few obstacles. Holes 8-11 and holes 17 &18 are situated next to N. Scenic Drive & Downs Blvd near the entrance to the park. Holes 8-10 have several trees to negotiate but no other hazards. Hole 11 has a low lying tree near the tee and a dogleg right. Hole 17 is a blind throw as the flag is on top of a large manmade hill. Hole 18's tee box puts the trees in your way for your tee shot, and features a long dogleg right with the road (N. Scenic Dr.) being out of bounds. Holes 12-15 are to the right of the parks' Downs Blvd entrance and are near the soccer fields. Only hole 12 offers a difficult challenge through the tunnel of trees. Hole 16 is situated all by itself next to the restrooms and workout station and is a good place to take a break and get a cool drink. Holes 19-24 are separated from the rest of the course and bounded by the dog park and N. Scenic Drive. The holes are all fairly wide open with the exception of the 432 foot hole 22. Lots of trees are strategically placed so that shot placement as well as distance both come into play. Some of the trickier holes (baskets) can be: Hole 1 - This medium length hole is bordered by water on the left, but unless you throw an absolutely horrible shot, the water should not come into play. Hole 4 - Be careful of throwing too hard here as you are throwing directly towards the water and the basket is less than 10 feet from the water's edge. If your disc goes in the water, consider it gone. Hole 5 - I've lost 2 or 3 discs on this hole, as there is water on the entire left side of the fairway that extends rightward into the field of play. Play it safe and throw far to the right if you can't carry the 250'ish feet to clear all of the water. Hole 6 - This hole will test your ability to throw low and straight off the tee box. If you can't, you are definitely going to hit some trees. The basket is somewhat protected behind a small cluster of trees on a slightly elevated hill. Hole 7 - The tee box is set on a man made elevation that offers a great view of the park.. This is a long par 3 as it is almost 500 feet to the basket. There are many trees in the way and it would be wise to keep to the right, as if you throw left, you will find yourself surrounded by trees. The basket to this hole is also on a man made hill that appears to be nearly 2 stories tall (15-20 feet). I have yet to par this hole. Hole 12 - I have thrown some of my worst throws on this hole. It is a 383 foot dogleg left that runs along Downs Blvd back towards N. Scenic Drive with the street being out of bounds. There are trees everywhere so you have to keep your shots straight or you will be forever lost in the trees. Hole 17 - Keep your disc low off the tee shot to avoid the big tree in your way. The basket is completely obscured as it sits on top of a man made hill and is all the way to the back of the "green". Hole 22 - If you want to make a par, you better be able to throw long and straight, as this hole is covered with trees and is over 430 feet. Stay to the right as it's easy to lose a disc in the backyard of one of the houses that line the left side of this The course has steadily improved this year, as has participation among local fairway. The course is well maintained and the grass is always freshly cut and kept short; so it's easy to locate your disc after every throw. Also, there never seems to be too many disc golfers on the course, so there's never any waiting. The downside to this course is the number of picnickers and recreational visitors that frequent the park. Some of them have no idea what disc golf is and actually picnic right next to the baskets; especially the elevated baskets on hole 7 and 17. Furthermore, lots of kids often want to "help you" and pick up your disc and bring it to you after you throw it. :-( But overall, I've played here at least a dozen times and every time has been a good time. If you are a first timer and are playing alone, allow at least 2 hours to complete your 1st round. Once you get accustomed to the course, it can be played (solo) in as little as 90 minutes.

If you are a disc golfer that lives on the South shore of Lake Pontchartrain, you only have 2…read morecourses to choose from; City Park and Lafreniere Park. If you truly enjoy this game, you owe it to yourself to cross the Causeway bridge and head over to The Pines disc golf course in Pelican Park. The park is only 5-10 minutes from the foot of the Causeway and offers much more than disc golf, to include batting cages, a skate park, a dog park, soccer and softball fields as well as a sand volleyball court. However, I will only be reviewing the disc gold course. This 18 hole course is nothing like the south shore variants. The tee pads are natural and contain a mixture of soft sand this is fairly stable when the conditions are dry. However, I would not recommend playing this course for at least 48 hours after any rain activity. There are several drainage ditches that can come into play for the 1st 9 holes, and some of them had water in them, even though it had not rained in almost a week when I played. I can easily see how this course could be unplayable, or not very fun after a rain. I've heard that "very large, if fairly shallow, puddles cover large parts of holes 15, 16, 17 and 18 after modest rains; and hole 2 develops a small pond during the wetter months." There are lots of trees of trees here, with most of them being large pine trees that will ruin a good throw at least a few times every round you play. This course's location lends itself to windy conditions, so be careful on those windy days, or you'll be chasing errant discs all over the place. I was not very fond of the layout, as there is a lot of walking from the basket of one hole to the tee pad of the next hole. Perhaps a little more thought could have been given here. For example, the distances between holes 4&5, 5&6 and 6&7 are nearly 300 feet; and a first timer will have a hard time finding the next hole without a map. Hole 9 & 10 are separated by a dog park as well. Some signage pointing the way to the next hole would be nice. Some of the trickier holes (baskets) can be: Hole 2: If you find yourself to the left and in the water/marsh, you may be out of a disc. Hole 3: The pro tees offer a 600+ foot shot, so bring out the big guns but try to avoid the trees. Holes 7 & 8 have enough trees to make a straight shot nearly impossible. Hole 10: Trees, trees and more trees. Unless you can throw with laser accuracy, you are bound to hit a tree. I've tried to throw out over the soccer field and hook it bak into play near the basket, which is well protected with more foliage. Holes 12-18: These are all long holes with more trees. Holes 12-16 are bordered on the right by woods, and if your disc goes in them, you will probably not be able rto find it. And I speak from experience. Overall, I like this course. Even though it's flat and has no real elevation changes, it offers some good challenges via water, woods, fence lines, dog parks and a million trees throughout the course. Just be sure to play when the course is dry.

This is an incredible disc golf course. Set in a very serene wooded section of Flanacher Park just…read more2 miles off of Airline Hwy (Hwy 61) in Zachary, LA, we were actually "one with nature" as could not hear any road noise or sounds of civilization. Growing up a "city boy", this was a very secluded (but enjoyable) experience. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and the freshly graded limestone parking lot has room for dozens of cars. There was a nice recreation center with bathrooms and water fountains too. Our Sunday arrival during the Saints game left the course completely empty except for 2 other parties that were also playing, so we nearly had the entire course to ourselves. Our foursome consisted of players that have all been pIaying for less than 9 months, and this technical course was definitely a challenge. In fact, I would not recommend it for the novice player for several reasons I am about to share. The concrete tee boxes are all in very good shape and there are signs at every tee box showing the "shape" of each hole as well as the distance. The signs, although simple in appearance, actually portray a fairly accurate layout. The course layout is pretty logical, even if you don't have a map (like we didn't). But kudos to the architects, as we never got lost or passed up a hole. We opted to play the 21 hole, 7,740 foot "pro tees"; which consisted of 11 par 3's, 8 par 4's and 2 par 5's. The entire course is carved into the woods and there are trees everywhere. Many fairways are actually very narrow and some appear to be a tunnel of trees. So shot placement is far more important than trying for absolute distance. There are no water hazards, but the woods make up for it. An errant throw will have you searching the nearby woods through briars that will definitely leave their mark on you; and I have the scars to prove it. I would definitely recommend having a spotter keep an eye on your disc when you throw it. If you are playing alone, don't ever take your eye off of your disc, especially if it veers into he woods. Many of the baskets are well protected by trees and shrubs and there are many holes that you cannot even see the basket from the tee box; as some holes have dogleg turns that are 90 degrees or more. These extreme turns will test your accuracy as well as your patience. Also, make sure you block out enough time to play this course, as it it long. I know that being a first timer here added to the total time spent on the course, but it took us 3.25 hours for our foursome to complete our round. There are no restrooms or water fountains on the course, so make sure you bring a few bottles of water with you while you play. All in all this is a great course and I am looking forward to playing it again just as soon as I can.

Also on the plus side, if you're a beginner, the holes are relatively short. If you are an advanced player, this is a negative. Also a con of this course is the haphazard layout. You really do need to get the map at the front gate, or get one off of the internet, so that you can find your way between certain hole locations. In a pinch, if you're desperate for some disc golf, this course will do. If you're a serious player, better off going down the road a little ways to a more challenging layout.

As a disc golfer that's new to the sport, I immediately hear the rumblings among players in the New…read moreOrleans area that the 21 hole course at Hiller Park in Biloxi, Mississippi was the best on the Gulf Coast. Being an adventurist and liking the challenge of playing new courses, I decided to make the 90 mile drive to give it a try. It turned out to be a very good decision, as this course has a lot to offer, especially in the use of the natural landscape to create many hazards and challenges. The park is located just a few miles from Keesler Air Force Base and there's actually base housing that butts right up to the park. The park appears to have been around for quite some time as there are a lot of mature cypress, oak and pines trees. There's also a lot of thick vegetation / brush lining some of the fairways and surrounding the baskets that makes hunting for your disc on an errant throw quite challenge. Water comes into play on a lot of holes, as there are salty / brackish fingerer lakes that extend from the Gulf of Mexico into the park. I don't recommend wading in for a disc as the brackish water is very murky and you can't tell what's beneath the surface. I like the fact that nearly every hole offers three different tee boxes (white, red & blue). We played the red every time, as it offered concrete tee pads and appeared to be the intermediate distance, as compared to the blue pro tees. The best way to review this course, to me, would be to describe all 21 holes. Hole 1 is right next to the pavilion/gazebo and forces you to throw over an arm of the bay onto a basket that's well protected. Throw left and you'll hit a tree and into the water. Fade right and your disc is going down faster than the Titanic. Hole 2 fades so far to the right that you can't see the basket, which is placed right at the edge of a wooded patch that will eat your disc for lunch. Hole 3 crosses a narrow creek that forces me to lay up for fear of hitting the water. There's also a lot of low lying branches over the water. Hole 4 crosses a dry creek and fades right to a basket near a bridge and a cluster of oak trees. Hole 5 was hard to find without a map and is actually in a tunnel of trees. If you cannot throw straight, keep a good eye on your disc as it ricochets on the pine trees like a pinball. Hole 6 is shaped like a horseshoe and bends endlessly to the left. Hole 7's mando forces you to throw through a narrow gap of trees to enter a short fairway that veers sharply to the right. Hole 8 is fairly straight and open and crosses another dry creek bed. Hole 9 fades slightly to the right through a cluster of large mature pine trees. The basket sits in front of a steel cable that separates the course from one of the park's parking lots. Beware of the thick brush to the right, as I have gone in to retrieve a disc and it is unforgiving. Hole 10 forces you to throw across another finger of the bay. The basket lies to the far right, so if you fade at all, you will go in the drink. Beware of the lone power line in front of the tee box that has been known to snag a few discs and cause them to drop into the water. Hole 11 is bordered by tennis courts to the right and a road to the left. The is another finger of the bay that opens up to the right . Unless you have a big arm, I recommend laying up and throwing at the basket from a 12 foot high perch. Hole 12 forces you to cross the water to get back to the tee box and punishes you with a technical throw protected by water and thick disc snagging trees. Hole 13 fades left with some trees to negotiate. Hole 14, I cannot recall and will update after I play my next round here. ;-( Hole 15 looks like an "ess" curve on a race track and features another water crossing and yet more trees. Hole 16, I cannot recall and will update after I play my next round here. ;-( Hole 17 drives across a long open field to a basket near the road to the right. Hole 18 requires a short walk and is nearly another tunnel of trees, but not quite as thick. The basket is well protected and requires a strong hook to the left and good accuracy. Hole 19 throws back near the tee box of 18 and has a lot of ricochet potential through the dense tree coverage. Hole 20 has you throwing back to the road near the pavilion / gazebo near hole 1. Hole 21 is a short hole. But throw too far and you are in the shrubbery. Throw too high and you may clear the shrubbery and end up in the bay. Overall, this is a very enjoyable course and I can see it easily becoming a favorite of mine. For New Orleanians, it's a little far, but definitely worth the drive.
