At reception I was told to go down to a small window half way down the hall to receive care. The woman sitting inside did not speak any English (not a crime but, when there are literally thousands of foreign tourists within a mile of this old town emergency room, very surprising). She rudely dismissed me when I couldn't explain that I had an injured foot in Czech and turned her back to me so I would leave. I asked her if there was anyplace else she could recommend for me to get care that spoke English, she ignored me and made clear that she was irritated by my question and the fact that I had not yet left the hospital. I asked to see a doctor and that was a word she understood and she sent a doctor out to the hall to see me. He seemed to know very little English himself but seemed to understand from my communication and demonstration that I had injured my foot and needed to be evaluated. He instructed me to go to the very end of the hall for care. When I reached the end of the hall there were only toilets. A nurse from another area who spoke a bit of English asked me what I needed and I described my injury. She said I needed to go back to the area I had spoken to the rude woman before because it was the correct place. I left the hospital to find care elsewhere as I didn't trust that I would receive appropriate care. I live around Europe most of the year in non English speaking countries and this has been the only place I've had trouble receiving medical care. They should put a system in place for non Czech speaking patients to communicate, even if only by typing their symptoms into a google translate program on their computers. I've worked in hospitals as a patient advocate and in Human Resources. I know that there are ethical as well as legal obligations for providing care to people who walk in your door. The treatment, lack of treatment, I received was completely unacceptable.

I am gonna call this maternity hospital Podolí in this review as we do. One of the best maternity…read morehospitals in Europe if we will talk about professional level of doctors. The second thing is customer approach. Let´s look at both. But first some generall facts. It doesn´t look awesomely beautiful from outside but it´s really nicely looking inside. Plenty of space, old statues, continuously renovated a rooms (for pacients) are big enough, especially if you are on of those private ones (which I totally recommend to book). Ok and now about those two things. As i said the first one is professional. Generally speaking czech obstetrics is on very high level. We have one of the lowest mortality in the world (top 3 actually). And Podolí is on the top of the rank. If any other hospital has some problems with mom and kid so they try to get them to this one (or Apolinář). They have the best skills and experiences. They can save babies which would be doomed somewhere else. That´s actually amazing. If any mom knows that the birth is risky, they go automatically to this hospital. So all and all, there is no question about the high level of professionalism of local medical staff. But there is a second thing and it is customer approcach and not only here but generally in czech hospitals. We carry this weight from comunist time when customer didn´t really matter or better said customer´s opinion. So in this case, it´s like I am the doctor and you are just a patient so you shut up and listen me because I am always right. Well, I understand that those people study for six or more years and have plenty of experiences but that doesn´ t mean that they can´t be more flexible in approcach and communication towards clients. Also many people wants to know exactly what will go on and the type approacch "Well, I could tell you but you wouldn´t understand so why should I" is also not the right one. So that´s the "dark" side of hospitals generally including Podolí. But not everything is so bad and now I am talking about Podolí. It´s getting better and it´s more or less really up to which doctor you meet because there are lights in the dark. Also all doctors and many midwifes speakes english in this hospital so that´s cool. Worse situation is with nurses. They don´t really speak so discussion with them might be sometimes frustrating or confusing but it´s not so horrible as it can sound. All and all I recommend this maternity hospital because the life of your baby is always the most important thing.
