They open at 600a but there was a queue to the left of the entrance when I arrived a bit after 800a. I waited 30 minutes to get in line and get out with my pastries. Pastry case was half-gone...so I need to come back...and come earlier. Two customers are inside at a time; it is a small bakery. I got a mochi an pan, choco glazed donut, apple bun, veg pizza, and spinanch & onion bun. I got brunch. Also, I got very full. Everything was excellent. It is comparable to Brug Bakery. Tough call but the mochi an pan was the best. They also sell pies for $25 and loaves of bread. Next time, I wanna get the Choco Animal, which, I believe, is a chocolate roll shaped into an animal. Yes, it's probably for kids, but kids aren't buying. Located in the Keolu Shopping Center on Keolu Drive in Enchanted Lakes. Open from 600a till 100p; Friday to Sunday. We stopped by Nene Goose Bakery on a Saturday around 9:30am. There was a small line outside, and they only allow one party in at a time, so things move steadily but not quickly. They're open from 6am-1pm, and by the time we got there, a few items we wanted to try were already sold out. If you have your heart set on something specific, definitely come early. Cash only!! One of the sweetest parts of the experience was the owner -- a sweet older lady who takes your order herself and carefully packages everything up for you. It feels very personal and old-school in the best way. Here's what we tried: Long John - The star of the show. It's served chilled and doesn't look like your typical long john. The donut itself was light, pillowy, and slightly crispy. The texture contrast was perfect. We'd honestly come back just for this. Mochi An Pan - Really good. The mochi had that satisfying chew, the red bean wasn't overly sweet, and the bread was soft and fresh. Mushroom & Onion - Savory and comforting. The cream sauce was flavorful and paired well with the soft bread Ham & Cream Cheese - This one was a bit too dense for us, likely because of the cream cheese topping. Not bad, just heavier than we prefer. Parking is easy and plentiful since it's in the same lot as the movie theater. I only ever get the mochi an pan here. It's the best combo of bread, red bean, and mochi with a walnut on top! It's best to eat it within the day as the mochi will get hard the next day. This was my favorite place to walk to in the morning when I still lived in Kailua! It's owned and operated by a very sweet couple and still running daily. They make what they make for the day. If you have a favorite, and don't want to walk in at 6am (to ensure you get your favorite(s)), preorder the previous day, pay and pick-up the next. My personal favorite is their Portuguese sausage roll. So. Amazing! The service is always friendly, nice and uplifting. The inside is small, allowing maybe 2-3 people inside to order. Located on Keolu Street in the same parking lot as the Keolu theater, this tiny mom and pop bakery is located. They are known for their Mochi filled anpan which very good and they have been making it for awhile. So if you enjoy mochi and anpan you will enjoy them. I also tried the pineapple and coconut pastry look like the texture of a flaky turnover, but instead it was soggy and not flaky which was a disappointment. The filling had chunks of pineapple bits and coconut which was tasty, but if you are looking for a flaky texture this is not for you. I arrived around 11:00 am and the selection was very limited and the customer in front of me placed an order and just purchased the last apple turnover which looked very good. The customer behind me had slim picking because there was hardly anything left. I guess if you are going that way it would be better to place an order ahead of time so you will be able to get what you want. They also sell different homemade breads, but even that was very limited items on the shelf. read more

Enjoyed the pastries we bought. My wife loved the spinach bread. I love supporting locals and will continue to come here when I'm in Kailua. I just wished they didn't sell out so early. I had the chocolate donut which had the perfect chewy consistency and the chocolate was nice and rich. I'd definitely eat a few of those the next time. Never heard of this place until my father in law bought their long John's for us one day. I went a couple weeks after that to check it myself. We went on a Saturday and the place only had one customer inside. I peeped in to see what they had since the sign said only 1 customer in a time and there was barely any pastries left. We ended up just getting their long johns again. Pastries are about $3-$6 which is a little bit on the pricer side. Hidden gem for the best spinach cheese rolls and baked goods this side of heaven! It's in a small shopping center where the Kailua Cinema is. Small little place with a sweet lady selling pillowy bread and savory and sweet baked treats. Judging from word of mouth and reviews from fellow Yelpers, the most popular items are the savory buns- namely the spinach-cheese, spinach mushroom and onion. There are other combos like onion, salmon spinach- ALL are good! Not flat buns like at other Japanese bakeries but they stand tall- filled with filling and surrounded by soft bread. She also recommended an anpan with a layer of sweet bean and a slab of soft mochi. Yummy!!! No wonder they sell out in the hour or two after opening! Hours are limited, it's open Thursday to Sunday from 6am to 1pm. Pro tip: you can pre-order and pay the day before and pick it up the next day to avoid the rush. And cash only. I'm glad we still have Nene Goose Bakery serving the Windward side of the island. The bakery reminds me of the Watanabe bakery but on a smaller scale. The quiet but sweet & patient lady in the front is the baker's wife and her husband does all the baking! Wow! They open early and close early afternoon so it's best to go early to get your favorites or choice of pastries before they run out! If you go near the last half hour of their closing time, she may have some pastries bagged together for a reduced price! If I still remembered correctly that I was told by his wife that he did learn from Mr. Watanabe and he did helped them set up when they first opened their bakery. Probably can see similarities in the pastries which is so delicate and delicious! You can spend an arm and leg since most of their pastries are from just under $2 to over $3 per donut/pastry. Just make sure you bring enough cash since they are a cash only bakery. If you're in a rush and there is a line, probably best to come another time since she does take her time and make sure everything is filled correctly. I give her credit not to get stressed & they seem to managed all these years with just the two of them. She now have an erasable "write"board to write down your pastry order. She used to write it down on the post-it notes but her husband bought her this so she can be paperless! She did said it's a little too heavy to carry around as she pack the orders in the box. Note, you have to spend at least $10 to have your pastries boxed otherwise it'll be bagged. I do like their anpan with mochi inside, cute animal breads, savory breads. I'm a big fan of her 1/2 loaf multi-grain bread which has no egg, milk or sugar inside and it taste so light and moist. The spinach bread is different too. It's great having it toasted! I freeze their breads since there are no preservatives in the bread but it's so soft if you eat it fresh. The size is similar to the Japanese large square bread. They also sell their 1-2 days old breads at a discounted price to the right as you entered. They have sometimes custard & pumpkin pies to the left, cake donuts, individual pizza, fancy filled pastries, but I love the savory ones the best. I asked my mom again how we are related to the wife and she said it was my grandpa's cousin is the wife's grandma through her father side. In the past I thought it was distance relationship through marriage. Can't confirm with my Grandma since she has passed but if it wasn't for the elders I wouldn't have known. Her father knew my grandparents but he has passed on too but his daughter only knew of us through what I told her. Small island and we may related to many and not know. If you ever in Kailua area in the morning it's worth checking out Nene Goose Bakery! It's near the Kailua Cinema in the little shopping complex next to Texaco Gas Station but not the Enchanted Lake Shopping Center with Safeway and McDonalds. A few weeks ago I had coffee with a friend and she brought some pastries to share. Those pastries were yummy. So last weekend I stopped by this bakery to pick up some treats. This is a very small bakery and is not open everyday. They're open from 6am to 1pm and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. From what I could tell is that people go early which I did. They have savory pastries and sweet pastries. We love the Anpan with red bean and mochi. Also the spinach rolls and for the chocolate lover in my family; the chocolate covered cinnamon rolls. Cute bakery in Kailua. Took a nice morning drive with mom to check this place out. Yummy Janpanese style bread!! Cute little store and the owner is very nice and friendly! This place is a must!! Their breakfast pizzas and muffins seemed to be made with their spinach dough. My favorite was the egg pizza and spinach muffin. I warmed it up in my airfryer for about 3 mins and it came out crispy on the outside and fluffy/airy on the inside!! Tried their mochi anpan (a must), glazed donut buttermilk donut, and apple roll. They were all amazing!! Fluffy and not as sweet... just right... reminded me of the bakeries I tried in Japan. I will definitely revisit!! I remember looking at Nene Goose Bakery's Yelp Business page years ago when I was searching for pies on the Windward side. I did a quick drive by the strip mall but could not see a sign from the main road so I didn't pull into the parking lot. Just recently, we had to stop my Enchanted Lake Pet Store on our way home and as we drove out of the parking lot I noticed the sign for Nene Goose Bakery! It's a small sign with lots of color so easy to miss if you're not right in front of it. I made my husband stop and park so I can run in and finally check it out. Nene Goose Bakery is the perfect mom and pop bakery with a great husband and wife team. I was there about 40 minutes before closing and they give a 10% discount. Since it was a quick find, I didn't get to check out their Yelp reviews and had to make my choices based on sight and craving. We tried the glazed donuts, chocolate donuts, buttermilk donuts, walnut roll and long john. Of course the chocolate donuts was my kids favorite. I enjoyed the long john. Long glazed donuts cut in the middle and filled with creme. The donuts had a slight crunch because of the chilled glaze which added a unique texture to the donuts that now has me reject any other long john out there. They bake their french bread on Sundays so I'm hoping to stop by soon. read more

This bakery is absolutely wonderful! It has the softest flakiest pastries I've ever eaten. The ham and cheese pastry is to die for. It's just a little mom and pop bakery, but you can tell the owner takes great pride in what she does. Other places will fill up a package to save bags, this owner will put the drinks you buy in one bag and your pastries in another so that it doesn't get smashed. I arrived here at 8:30am on a Saturday morning and all the glazed donuts were already sold out. Boo! But, I did get to take home two mochi an pans, a couple cute choco animals and a cinnamon roll. I loved everything! The choco animals are really detailed too. My daughter had the hardest time deciding between the reindeer, the crab, and the seahorse. What a find! We were looking for a breakfast plate at the okazuya next store and went to the bakery first. It is not a large bakery, but even early on a Saturday, people were trickling in. The nice lady behind the counter was patient with us as we decided what we wanted. We tried the chocolate cream pan, champignon, donut holes, spinach and salmon bun, and butter flake roll. Believe it or not, the best item was the champignon and it was made with no oil or butter! It was crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Nene Goose Bakery is hidden in a little strip mall on Keolu drive. Don't confuse yourself, it's not in the little mall that Safeway, Mcdonalds and starbucks is in. Instead it's in the mall with the little theater, on the other side of the gas station from the bigger mall. There is plenty of parking, and it's a fast in and out for your pastry needs. Nene Goose is a tiny little store front, and you haveeee to get here early if you want a bigger selection. They offer a wide range of sweet and savory pastries including little individually sized pizzas, fruit tarts and animal shaped buns. The cashier is a small japanese woman. She's so cute and friendly. I imagine her creating the little animal buns early in the morning. About that, you need to go early because many of the pastries will run out before 10am. The bakery items are a little expensive, but I think the quality is worth it. These are not your average Safeway doughnuts. Everything is so dainty and delicious looking. The animal buns are a great example; so much creativity goes into making the different animals. Definitely stop by for a snack, or for breakfast.
