We had heard of others in our community using ABC Bookkeeping and Tax Service, and they were all very happy with the service they received. We gathered all of our business and our personal tax papers and made an appointment. We took a chance and gave full control over to ABC and they are fantastic !!! One of the very best business and personal decisions we had ever made. We found out (the hard way), that the tax software we, (and others) purchased and used would get all of the legal and ethical write-offs that we were entitled to, but no, we were surprised to find out that ABC Bookkeeping and Tax Service found out that we were not getting everything back that we legally and ethically deserved. I was very very skeptical at the time, I couldn't believe that they could do better than the computerized tax program we had used, but we were assured that everything, both our business and personal taxes were done correctly and they again told us that they stand firmly behind all of their work. Skeptical as I am, I spent slot of time double checking and found ( to my surprise and amazement) that they had been able to get all of the legitimate tax write-offs that we were legally and ethically entitled to, plus more that had been missed previously. We didn't mind paying our taxes, everyone of us has a duty and obligation to do that, we feel we are helping provide for others until they can provide for themselves, or if they can no longer provide for themselves, we want to help them just as they too had helped others by paying theirs. That said, we don't want to pay more than what the law says we need to pay, and we had found out that we had been doing just that. We decided to retire the business this year, but if we stayed in business, we would continue our relationship with ABC, they have been absolutely amazing these past almost 10 years. So I'll just start at the beginning of my working "relationship" with Kathy. At first I thought…read moreshe was going to be the answer to my prayers for a good accountant / bookkeeper. We agreed that she was going to do my monthly bookkeeping and then my taxes when they came due. The next few months were a little odd because I never received an invoice from her for the monthly bookkeeping, I had to actually reach out a couple of times and inquire about the bills and where we were at accounting wise. She said that everything was going good and that she would "try" and get me a monthly invoice, which never happened. Before 2021 taxes were finalized, I called for some advice about buying a new truck for my business. I needed to know what my tax obligation looked like before I purchased the truck. She told me a dollar amount and based off that information I purchased the vehicle. When it came time to sign off on the taxes my tax obligation went up almost $6000. I called and asked her why and how they went up so much in such a short period of time. Her response was that they need to re-categorize some things and that they were giving me 100% credit for business meals, she said that I was only allowed to claim 50%. (Which is not true for tax years 2021 and 2022, the Federal Government was allowing 100% deduction for those two years due to Covid.) I bit my tongue and moved on. Still not receiving any monthly invoices other than what I owed for the tax preparation. Reached out multiple times throughout 2022 and was told by one of Kathy's employees that they needed monthly bank statements or access to my bank account on-line. Which I gave them a log-in for my bank. This employee received it and logged on, confirming that it was all they needed. Again, months go by and no contact or invoices. We are now in 2023. I am now an LLC filing as an S-corp (per Kathy's recommendation), so I'm assuming that it's important to stay on top of things. I reached out again to Kathy and inquired about the invoicing and where things were at with the accounting. She responded with "You were supposed to get us access to your bank last year and you never have, so nothing has been done". Never mind that I got them access in the beginning of 2023 and have the email chain with her employee verifying as such. She then said that she was mistaken and would look into it. A week goes by and all of a sudden she emails me asking about my S-corp application, wondering if it was approved. I told her yes and that her employee was aware of it as well at the beginning of 2023. She then proceeds to throw together my taxes for 2022 and tells me to sign them, "they need to be filed by September 15th." She had questions about some debits in the business account but never received the answer to those due to the fact I thought we had until October 15th to file. She just moved everything to "supplies" and threw the tax forms together. I sent her an email listing my concerns about how things have gone up to this point and was looking for some answers. She filed the taxes and quit. Now I have NO idea what has been done or what NEEDS to be done. I'm now in the race to find another accountant that can come in and clean up her mess. By the way, that truck I bought? I had to sell it immediately for a $2500 loss. This "accountant" has potentially cost me thousands of dollars by leaving me high and dry the way she did. My next step, filing a complaint with the Oregon Board of Accountancy. If you're in the market for a new accountant, go somewhere else.

After several years as their client I have moved on to another firm providing the same services (and more) at lower cost. If you choose to hire them, recommend staying on top of them about deadlines/deliverables, having them invoice you frequently and in detail, requiring them to get your approval in advance on any potentially expensive work they consider to be outside the scope of what you are already paying them for, not letting them talk themselves up too much (or talk down to you), and augmenting them with subject-matter specialists for any work that is highly complex and outside the scope of general-purpose tax return prep.

So, why is it when I ask questions that they do not have the answer to, I get billed in excess of $200.00 an hour for them to research? -Becuase they look out for your best interests, right? Not here. On my taxes they were making assumtions that were incorrect, and then bill me to explain what the heck happened. - Because they are fair, right? Yes, you guessed it, not here! I asked a question about including some donations made...and got billed over $500 for them to do research...and this is on a $200 donation, that would have maybe saved me $20 in taxes. So, I end up getting all my tax returns amended and pay to get it done. The new accountant did it in record time and charged nothing in comparison to this CPA firm.
